One of my personal favorite horror movies of all time, Phantasm, just celebrated it's 45th anniversary with an Instagram giveaway of the original movie poster, and I ended up winning! Appropriately, I'm wearing my awesome @cavitycolors shirt. To share some of my own nostalgia, when I was little around 2008 or 2009 ish (I don't remember exactly when but I'm pretty sure it was somewhere around that time), there used to be one channel you'd always want to tune into late at night if you wanted to see a scary movie, the Chiller channel. One night, me and my Dad stayed up late (because he's awesome and let me do stuff like that) and we came across Chiller doing a back to back repeat marathon of Phantasm and Phantasm II. Before the start of the movie, Angus Scrimm came on and gave a brief introduction. Even after all these years I still remember the haunting last words of his speech, "You will be seeing a film that holds a very special place in countless hearts, and know that as you watch, the Tall Man will be watching with you...just behind you there...in the shadows..." And just like Angus said, the dark world of the Tall Man and the saga of the silver spheres found a very special place in my own heart that night as well... Wrapped up the Phantasm franchise with Ravager. This was certainly an interesting end to the whole saga. It was great getting a lot of the characters back for the final installment and it actually does get pretty emotional as it comes to an end. I enjoyed this one for the most part. In the end, I still feel like I’m left with more questions than answers. It’s just hard to determine what’s real and what isn’t. The effects are a mixed bag. The makeup/practical effects still look good but some of the added CGI looked pretty rough. All-in-all, it’s a solid ending to a fun franchise. Phantasm IV: Oblivion is an interesting watch but also a mixed bag. I could only imagine what it would’ve been like to watch this one when it came out in 1998 only to realize you were going to have to wait 16 years before you finally got the conclusion the story so desperately needed. I would’ve been pissed. There were some things I did like about the film like the time traveling aspect, the practical effects and the overall visuals. On the flip side though, there’s still too many questions to be answered. I also prefer when Reggie and Mike have more screen time together because I enjoy their chemistry. I do think I would put this ahead of part 3 but only by a thin margin. After rewatching part 3, I still think this is probably my least favorite in the series. Having said that though, I don’t believe this to be a bad movie. This film just doesn’t hit for me like the first two do. I like the additions of Tim and Rocky, but the chemistry is lacking to me with the group. The practical effects are still really good. I enjoyed the look of the dead bodies and the kills. The story was lacking and honestly leaves me with more questions. Even with my complaints, I do still like the movie. This one though proves that this series is meant to be watched all at once with minimal break time in between. Just finished up Phantasm II a little bit ago. This was a good sequel to the original. There’s so many positives with this film and I found myself enjoying it even more this time around. To start, this one did a great job with the setting/locations and just the overall creepy atmosphere. I just really enjoyed the overall aesthetic of the movie. The practical effects looked so good in this film. I’m not sure what kind of budget they had for this but they clearly allocated their money well. The kills were brutal and looked great in the process. I also just enjoy the overall story as it progresses. I still have lingering questions but I do feel like I’m picking up a little more with each rewatch. I have some issues with the sound at times and I think some of the story/dialogue is a little hokey or could use a little explanation but it doesn’t hold it back from being an entertaining, enjoyable film. The last time I watched this one, it was one of my least favorites but now I’d probably put it right in line with the first. 1979’s Phantasm has to be one of the most unique, original films I’ve ever watched. It’s an absolute trip but highly entertaining too. Sci-Fi isn’t a typical go-to genre for me but this franchise is so damn interesting. What’s crazier is that there’s 37 years between the release of the first film and the fifth and final installment and it doesn’t seem to miss a beat, which is unheard of. There’s definitely a lot to like with this film. As I said earlier, it’s incredibly unique. There is no other film like it that I know of. The story is completely bonkers but it keeps you engaged. Also, Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man is genuinely creepy and I’m glad he’s a mainstay throughout. I have some minor nitpicks with the film. I might just be an idiot but it’s hard to fully grasp the story in what is real and what was apart of the dream. Plus with the inter-dimensional stuff it’s tough to determine what exactly the protagonists are dealing with. Despite all that, I believe this franchise to be fun and entertaining. For this special episode of Terd Cinema Screening we introduce @bobross.2.0 to the incredible 1979 Don Coscarelli masterpiece PHANTASM. The Special Terd Award is a three way tie between Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, and the 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 440 6 Barrel (actually it was a 340 made to look like a 440). Mike, a young teenage boy who has just lost his parents, is afraid to lose his brother, follows him to a funeral, where Mike witnesses the Tall Man lifting a coffin on his own. Mike decides to investigate, and discovers that the Tall Man, protected by his flying spheres, is shrinking dead bodies down to half their normal size and reanimating them as slaves. It is then up to Mike, his brother, and Reggie the ice cream man to stop the Tall man. 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️ This version is from the 2017 Phantasm Collection blu-ray box set (includes Phantasm I - V) from Well Go USA. PHANTASM III (1994) Nachdem sich Reggie und Mike in letzter Sekunde vor dem Tall Man retten konnten, werden sie in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert, wo sie aufs Neue attackiert werden. Die Flucht von dort endet für Mike in den Fängen des "großen Mannes". Diesmal schafft es der Tall Man, Mike in seine Gewalt zu bekommen und ihn in seine morbide Welt zu entführen. Nun ist Reggie auf sich allein gestellt, doch eine Kapitulation vor dem Bösen ist keine Option. Um Mike aus dessen Fängen zu befreien, macht er sich auf den Weg zum Mausoleum von Holtsville, wo sich ein riesiges Krematorium befindet. Dort stellt sich Reggie, verstärkt durch ein paar neugewonnene Mitstreiter, einer Armee aus Untoten, silbernen Kugeln und dem Tall Man. Es kommt zum unausweichlichen Kampf der zwei Welten... Phantasm III läuft vom Stil her ähnlich wie der zweite Teil ab. Mit dem Unterschied, dass Mike - welcher glücklicherweise wieder wie in Teil 1 von A. Michael Baldwin gespielt wird - relativ früh vom Tall Man entführt wird und Reggie sich erst einmal allein durchschlagen muss. Ansonsten kann man auch diesen Film als "Action-Horror-Roadmovie" bezeichnen, welches einiges zu bieten hat: Tolle Effekte, wir erfahren mehr über die Sphere-Kugeln, der Tall Man schickt nun auch Zombies ins Rennen, es werden interessante, neue Charaktäre eingeführt (ein neuer "Boy" namens Tim sowie die toughe Rocky zum Beispiel) und alte kehren zurück (Mikes Bruder Jodie). Humor ist auch vorhanden, so geht der in Teil 2 eingeführte Running Gag des "dauergeilen", aber bei Frauen immer scheiternden Reggie weiter. Und zum - offenen - Schluss bleibt man gespannt mit der Frage zurück: Warum ist der Tall Man so besessen von Mike bzw. was hat er nun mit ihm gemacht? Wie geht es weiter? PHANTASM II (1988) Neun Jahre ist es her, dass Mike den Tall Man daran hindern konnte, weiter auf dem Friedhof Leichen auszugraben, um diese zu Zwergsklaven mutieren zu lassen und sie dann in eine andere Dimension zu transportieren. Doch nun kehrt der Tall Man mit dem tödlichen Willen zurück, sein blutiges Werk fortzusetzen. Mike und sein Freund Reggie beschließen, den Tall Man zu verfolgen und zu vernichten. Schnell werden sie fündig, denn der Gesuchte hinterlässt verwüstete Städte mit leeren Friedhöfen. Ihr Kampf gegen den unbarmherzigen, kaum zu stoppenden Leichenfledderer geht in die nächste mörderische Runde. Knapp 10 Jahre nach Phantasm kam die Fortsetzung in die Kinos - eine größere Produktion mit mehr Budget. Was mir schon immer an der Reihe gefallen hat, ist, dass es bei jeder Fortsetzung so ziemlich genau dort weitergeht, wo der Vorgänger geendet hat. Die Schauspieler mögen über den langen Produktionszeitraum der Reihe altern - völlig egal, es wird konsequent durchgezogen. 😊 Nach der actiongeladenen Anfangssequenz kommt dann der Zeitsprung, Reggie und Mike kommen wieder zusammen und führen den Kampf gegen den Tall Man weiter. Dabei präsentiert sich Phantasm 2 ganz anders als sein Vorgänger - Phantasm goes 80s, kann man sagen. Statt eines düsteren, mysteriösen Horrorfilms bekommen wir hier ein "Action-Horror-Roadmovie" geboten. Typisch für die Entstehungszeit wird auch etwas Humor eingestreut. Tolle, handgemachte Spezialeffekte bekommen wir serviert, ebenso wieder das großartige Phantasm-Theme. Ein Kritikpunkt ist für mich, dass Mike nicht mehr von A. Michael Baldwin gespielt wird. Auf Drängen des Studios wurde er vom "Schönling" James LeGros ersetzt (was auch Regisseur Don Coscarelli bereut und in Teil 3 wieder korrigiert hat). Weiter ist mir bei den letzten beiden Sichtungen aufgefallen, dass der Film - im Vergleich zu Teil 3 - ein paar Längen hat. PHANTASM (1979) Nach einer Beerdigung beobachtet Mike, wie ein angsteinflößender Mann, der "Tall Man", mit bloßen Händen den Sarg wegschleppt. Mike verfolgt den "Tall Man" und findet heraus, dass dieser im Inneren eines von silbernen, fliegenden Kugeln überwachten Mausoleums tote menschliche Körper zu teuflischen Zwergsklaven werden lässt. Die Kreaturen werden im Anschluss mittels eines Dimensionstors in eine unbekannte Welt transportiert. Wie kann man etwas töten, was nicht von dieser Welt oder bereits tot ist? Heute beginne ich mit meinen Filmkritiken zur Phantasm-Reihe, in chronologischer Reihenfolge fange ich bei Teil 1 an. In den frühen 90ern kam ich durch die Ausstrahlung auf RTL mit der Reihe in Berührung und war gleich begeistert. Phantasm 1 bietet eine spannende Story, tolle Charaktäre, einen guten Soundtrack - das Phantasm-Theme ist meiner Meinung nach genauso genial wie die Themes anderer legendärer Horrorfilme, z. B. Halloween - und mit dem Tall Man wurde eine legendäre Horror-Ikone erschaffen, von Angus Scrimm perfekt dargestellt. Phantasm schafft es, einen mit seiner unheimlichen Athmosphäre in den Bann zu ziehen. Gegen Ende fragt man sich, was real war, und was nicht. Erst nach mehrfachem Anschauen fiel mir auf, dass der Film über gar nicht so viele Dialogeszenen verfügt - die Bildsprache schafft es, einen mitreißen. Don Coscarelli hat damals (mit Mitte 20) einen hochwertig aussehenden, tollen Independent-Horrorfilm geschaffen.
