🚜Book Review🚜 Midwestern Gothic @scottthomascaresaboutyou Have you read Kill Creek? If you haven’t, you should. This book of short stories is from the same universe and told in a very clever way. 🌾Review🌾 Having lived in the Midwest my entire life this book of short stories was a real treat. Gothic horror can be found anywhere, even in a barn or a farmhouse or possibly just the stolen land. I enjoyed all the stories, but my absolute favorite was One Half of a Child’s Face. My favorite movie of all time is Hitchcock’s Rear Window and this had all the vibes. Sienna is lonely without her daughter, having to share weekends with her ex husband and his new girlfriend. She passes the time by editing a collection of essays, Scares and Stripes, (I’d like to read that myself) and watching the windows and people in the apartment building next door. Her ex husband happens to live in one of those apartments. The horror in this tale is real and monstrous. Imagine the movie Sinister, but with a single mom heroine. I immediately related to Sienna. She’s one of my favorite characters in a book so far in 2024. Abigail (2024) Wow… Make no mistake, that was not a fun wow; it’s more of an I am done with this “wow.” “Abigail (2024)” delivers a lackluster experience that falls short of expectations. While the cast is impressive, the storyline fails to build genuine tension and is disappointingly predictable. It feels like a diluted version of “Annabelle,” lacking the scares and depth expected from a horror film. While the majority of this story is set in the past, the reader goes back and forth between the present and 1979 [from when the MC, Oliver, is a child] where he grew up at Hardacre Priory. He'd rather forget about his time there due to grief and scary incidents that would occur. Don't want to get into too much without spoiling, but will say that you can FEEL the atmosphere and what Oliver went through during his childhood. My biggest reason for not going higher is the story felt too slow at times [that's a personal issue]. But the details Wright shows you and her storytelling is phenomenal. I love when a horror with a perfectly creepy cover delivers! This is a blend of gothic horror with a f/f relationship and a whole bunch of wtf. I loved the atmosphere and storytelling – you never quite know what is real and what isn’t! Roos is a child who has bonded with a spirit and is forced to perform fraudulent seances with her mama. When a benefactor takes her away when she’s older, Roos finds she’s not the only one with a spirit companion and she has a lot to learn about the way the world works. The gothic horror aspect was fantastic, featuring perfectly decaying manor and a sordid family history. Not to mention the descriptions of the spirit companions – WOW – super creepy and disturbing! There were a lot of elements to this novel that keep you entertained and wondering what possibly could have happened as we find out early that there have been murders. Sibilla Fenoglio wants nothing more than to live with her husband in this run-down, derelict watermill. Uninhabited since the Renaissance after a mysterious disaster befell the previous owners, the mill requires extensive repairs. But there is something frightening about the mill. Repairs are violently undone, half-seen figures begin stalking Sibilla through the grounds, and haunting echoes of the previous owners’ lives infiltrate the present. As the disturbances grow more vicious and her husband more secretive, she realizes that she and her child are in danger. The most haunting to me was the whispering the women could hear. It felt like someone was whispering to me in my living room at times. This has two historical timelines, one in 1586 and 1933 both creepy and haunting. It’s a slow horror burn that grasps your interest and you can’t let go, wanting to know and fearing what’s coming next. This is a good one friends!
