I feel for the poor souls who are going to go see this movie on a date after hearing it’s a horror film (it’s not one by the way) and be traumatized—not by how scary this is—but how terrible it is. By terrible, I don’t mean in a quality sense necessarily, but in the sense that this is an almost unwatchable film that I’m certain general audiences will HATE. It’s definitely one of the most self indulgent, pretentious, and artsy fartsy films I’ve seen in a while. I’m sure film bros/snobs will love it though (or at least say they do), and it does have cult classic written all over it. Like Jane Schoenbrun’s feature film debut We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, it’s creepy and atmospheric but completely devoid of a proper narrative. Once again, the most interesting scenes are characters relating dialogue of things that would’ve been nice to see but that we are not privy to. It commits the cardinal sin of writing which is telling and not showing. In addition, the “plot” of the film starts more than halfway through, there are some unnecessary and random fourth wall breaks, the actor who plays the younger version of the main character looked nothing like the older version, and if you think about the film more, it’s kind of a ripoff of Moonlight. For positives, the film is shot extremely well, the use of music (though too much) worked effectively in some scenes, and the film has an interesting thesis on our relationship to media — which can both be healthy and unhealthy. Overall, I actually want people to see this because it’s going to be hilarious how much they despise it. As I’m writing this review at the theater, I heard a woman apologize to her boyfriend and say that the film was “brutal to get through” and also overheard a group of four friends ranting about how the movie went nowhere. Honestly, same.

The Fall Guy Directed by David Leitch ***8.5/10*** It is that time of year again. Big budget, blockbuster-action films are on the horizon for the blazing summer months. Cooling down in a large theater with top of the line action is a necessity for many moviegoers, however for this critic it can be a drag. Where CGI elements are primarily taking up the space that practical effects used to have, action/adventure films feel less human every year. CGI is not necessarily the problem but filmmakers application of it to mask flat characters and run of the mill storylines in place of visuals that make one forget the heartlessness of the film they may be viewing. As a lover of some of the biggest action/adventure stories in history, films do not have to choose between big budgets and quality. The Fall Guy directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce follows Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) a talented stunt man for the biggest action star in the world, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), taking major hits for a living and putting himself in danger daily. When he falls for camerawoman Jody (Emily Blunt) on a film set, his metaphorical fall turns into a literal one when he sustains a life-altering back injury after a failed stunt. When Jody is given the chance to direct her dream film, Colt is brought on as a stunt performer on her film as producer Gail Myers (Hannah Waddingham) seeks out his help with her own dilemma, the unknown whereabouts of star Tom Ryder. The Fall Guy is a wildly charming action film that at its root is a love letter to stunt performers and film crews working tirelessly behind the scenes. David Leitch, having been a stunt man himself, has a clear admiration for the intense work stunt performers must endure that have made some of the greatest film scenes in history sensational. Ryan Gosling gives his best performance in a decade playing the insanely handsome Colt Seavers with a face almost too good to hide behind the scenes, being one of the many great laughs of the film. His chemistry with Jody, charmingly done by Emily Blunt, is one that is impossible not to root for, not because of the circumstances of their story, (cont in comments)

a mere 10 years ago... one of the best experiences of my LIFE! I loved all the hoopla but the BEST part was getting schooled by the FANS! They knew WAYYY more than I did! Meeting so many people who shared the same passion for the VMars universe was exhilarating- when filming wrapped, I ate in-n-out burgers with many of the Kickstarter fans who funded our movie and provided the opportunity for us to create.
