The Harlem Renaissance occurred after a great upheaval in American society during the great migration of blacks from the South and after the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the rise of the KKK and Jim Crow. Harlem was a destination for not only the formerly enslaved and their descendants but people from the Caribbean and Africa. This cultural mixture gave rise to the "New Negro Movement" (as it was called then) of artistic expression and political and social militancy that we know of today. To celebrate this pivotal time in American history, The Met has assembled some 160 works of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and films created by some of the Harlem Renaissance's most renowned artists. Most of the works were contributed by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) This is a sampling of the works on display. "The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism" is on display through July 28, 2024. #harlem #themet #harlemrenaissance #blackart #art #blackartists #newyork @metmuseum @schomburgcenter @hbcubuzz @hbcustory #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory

Disrupting public space has to be the norm. Black Austin Tours is invested in pushing back and centering the histories, experiences, and contributions of Black people in Austin and beyond! Thanks, blavitydotorg and tamyra_gordon , for ensuring when a large conference/festival like #Sxsw comes to town that the local Black experience is included. As #AfroTech approaches, visitors and locals alike must understand the history that makes Austin an ideal conference location. What happened and happens to Black communities in a changing tech-centered environment like Austin? How did the inception of the official Negro District allow Austin to further invest in technology? These are questions we must contend with if we speak about equity. Learning is important, especially in a new place where people are willingly or forced to invite others in. Thanks, justinhcinema Justin Humphrey, for capturing and editing this piece together. #trueaustin #blackhistory #blacktravel #blackaustintours #texasblackhistory #austinblackhistory #blacktours

Last week, Austin Public Health showed up for an East Austin Walking Tour. I hope the historical grounding from the tour will assist them in their work in our communities. Unfortunately, it's difficult for anyone to access this information due to Black histories, experiences, and contributions being suppressed in our educational system and mainstream accounts. Access to historical occurrences is necessary for people who are there to serve to do their jobs well. As such, we must have access to Black history and other under-told and historically excluded groups' stories to ensure that once people go to work in communities, they can try to minimize harm and work toward equity. Thanks for sharing some photos with us. See y'all again! #trueaustin #blackhistory #blacktravel #blackaustintours #texasblackhistory #austinblackhistory #blacktours

But Juneteenth becoming a national holiday wasn’t an unadulterated triumph. Black people know how cultural phenomenon that originate with us can be co-opted when adopted by other groups. The use and misuse of the word “woke” comes to mind as an example. There is always the looming threat of whitewashing Juneteenth history—sanitizing the past to make it more palatable to fragile egos in the present. But the certain misappropriation of Juneteenth does not have to be all bad. It can also be an occasion for education. It’s a massive responsibility to research and share Black histories, stories, and contributions. It’s not a responsibility to take lightly, especially since this work happens in public spaces where folks with diverse thoughts and educational experiences are present. We know the “documents” and “records” don’t tell the complete story, and we must hold that in our research. However, due to barriers and exclusionary educational practices, many people have never been exposed to what is contained in historical records. As such, it’s our responsibility as public storytellers and tour guides of Black histories to present this information. We must make folks uncomfortable. We must make people challenge their understanding. We must invoke emotions. However, we can’t sacrifice our truths for the sake of others’ comfort. If you don’t agree or like what is presented to you, your challenge is to sit and dig deeper. #blackaustintours #blackhistory #blacktravel #blackaustin #blacktour

“When Oregon’s settlers wanted Indigenous land or when Southern plantation owners wanted Black labor, it was clear to all of them, based on the myth of White supremacy that had been propped up by scientists and theologians alike for four hundred years, that they was absolutely no reason for them not to take it.” The Place We Make | Breaking the Legacy of Legalized Hate. Sarah L. Sanderson @sarahlsandersonwriter In Portland, Oregon, considered one of the whitest cities in America, Sara Sanderson uncovers the history of Jacob Vanderpool of Oregon City, “the only person in the history of the United States ever convicted and punished solely for the crime of being Black.” He was legally exiled under law 😱 -the Oregon Exclusion Law. Along the way she uncovers the leader’s involvement, her ancestor’s history and dives into her own heart and shares humbly and vulnerably through confession within the lens of her Christian faith. A truth telling whyte Christian-they exist 😱! Thank you for The Center @thecentercommunity for hosting this deep dive book club, welcoming hard conversations in a safe space! James and I are grateful for your hard and holy work! The book club was led by John Williams , Director, and we were grateful to be in person and present to listen and learn from beautifully brave hearts sharing their lives and experiences! We ended the club with time with the author to ask questions and listen to more of her story. Check out and follow The Center for Restorative Justice @thecentercommunity for future book clubs, workshops, and pilgrimages across the US. Run and buy this book! The life of Jacob Vanderpool must be seen, heard, and understood. One life. So many to uncover so let’s work at reading through one story at a time! Stories grow empathy which is what the world desperately needs. Learn forward!! On this day in 1800, John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut. He was an evangelical preacher and a prominent leader in the American abolitionist movement in the decades preceding the Civil War. First reaching national prominence in the 1850s for his radical abolitionism and fighting in Bleeding Kansas, Brown was captured, tried, and executed by the Commonwealth of Virginia for a raid and incitement of a slave rebellion at Harpers Ferry in 1859. “You know what John Brown did? He went to war. He was a white man who went to war against white people to help free slaves. White people call John Brown a nut. Go read the history, go read what all of them say about John Brown. They’re trying to make it look like he was a nut, a fanatic. They made a movie on it, I saw movie on the screen one night. Why, I would be afraid to get near John Brown if I go by what other white folks say about him. But they depict him in this image because he was willing to shed blood to free the slaves. And any white man who is ready and willing to shed blood for your freedom – in the sight of other whites, he’s nuts... So when you want to know good white folks in history where black people are concerned, go read the history of John Brown. That was what I call a white liberal. But those other kind, they are jquestionable.” — Malcolm X #draw #draws #drawing #drawings #illustration #drawingsketch #portraitdrawing #sketches #sketching #sketchbook #digitaldrawing #digitalart #digitalillustration #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #history #ushistory #blackandwhite #johnbrown #abolitionist #bleedingkansas #slavery #blackhistory #ally #allies #19thcentury #uscivilwar #civilwar #harpersferry #resistance

Different pharaohs from different tribes ruled khemet (Africa )) which is why you see many different cultural practices and rituals in one kingdom . All pharaohs(woman and male ) fought , except Aten as far we know . Like king tut , who was brought up as a Maasai warrior , you don’t need archeology when you can clearly see his depictions and statues .. Presently the Maasai are living in Kenya . The other Pharaohs from their paintings , show that some are xhosa tribe ,hamar tribe , Afa tribe , nambia tribes , and other tribes from inner Khemt (Africa ) . So it was quiet clear why the paintings where shown in order to show and tell how each pharaoh ruled and divined over the kingdom and what took place in each reign . Furthermore for the colors you see like blue and green :the blue represents the energy to posses the water energy / spirit , in khemt(Africa ) every tribe has a energy/ spirit they all represent like water , earth(soil , plants ) green , fire and air energy . Each energy has a libation specific for it to properly invoke it , maintain and honor it properly!!!! Rules that guide every individual governed/guided by the specific energy . The snake symbolizes strength , capability, and high wisdom , it also belongs to the water / earth energy . Which there is no one individual who possess water energy / spirit that would do away with it the snake symbolism . For it is water deity’s that speak and or send Greeting through the snake to the individual who possess its energy and they are considered the strongest energy because no one or nothing can do away with water . People who understand this energy and appease them are very likely to be strong or wealthy and indestructible( applies to all deity that govern your bloodline . ) but the day you decided to turn away and no longer acknowledge your ancestral governance ! All that you have gain from them will be destroyed and taken away for good untill you re align your self with the maat maa of your family and ancestral governing . Bring back the one way , the one governing. Dua Dua sema twy . #blacktruths #truth #consciousness #kemet #blackhistory #africanhistory

The very first ‘Kentucky Derby’ in 1875 was won by a black jockey named Oliver Lewis (1857-1924). His time of two minutes 37. 75 seconds set an American record over the mile and a half distance. The winning thoroughbred was trained by renowned African American trainer Ansel Williamson. In 2010, the city of Lexington, Kentucky built an extension to Newtown Pike. The city of Lexington held a contest to name the new street. Because this was the road where McGrathiana Farm had once been, Oliver Lewis’ name won with 60 percent of the votes cast.8 In addition to the newly-named Oliver Lewis Way, the University of Kentucky’s Class of 2011 funded a historic marker that was installed in 2012. #OliverLewis #AnselWilliamson #KentuckyDerby #150anniversary #WhiteWashedHistory #BlackExcellence #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistory #Trailblazer #Horseracing

The all-Black Army regiments established in 1866 following the Civil War, known as Buffalo Soldiers, played an important role in American westward expansion and the displacement of Indigenous populations. Many of those who served as Buffalo Soldiers were formerly enslaved African Americans and military service offered them the opportunity to make a living and provide for themselves and their families. Their legacy, however, is a complicated one for they often stood on the front lines of conflict with Native Americans. Disrupting the common narratives of manifest destiny, our exhibition, buffalo soldiers: reVision presents a rare chance to reconcile some of the most difficult aspects of Colorado’s past while also looking toward the future of historical interpretation and how museums can tell more inclusive and representational histories. 📸 Photo: A cabinet card photograph of an unidentified African American soldier from the 10th Cavalry Regiment, Troop E, circa 1900. The image shows the soldier standing in full uniform, resting his left hand on an upright saber while holding a trumpet or bugle to his side in the right. He is posing in front of a brick wall, likely at a fort in Wyoming. -- History Colorado William Robinson collection, 2020.48.4 #buffalosoldiers #blackhistory #history #colorado #coloradohistory

Sage Journals https://journals.sagepub.com > pdf "Cultural Anthropology " 🎯 "Iroquois" system of cousin terms for the Zulu. ... Isluga's connections with the Chilean state ... lraqw and with Bantu agriculturalists... 🎯 💢Where did the Iraqw tribe come from?💢 The migration journey of the Iraqw originated from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in the Middle East over 500 years ago. He says, the Iraqw, came from Mesopotamia through Egypt, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. There are notable similarities between the Iraqw language and the languages spoken in Ethiopia and Somalia.Apr 1, 2021 https://www.thecitizen.co.tz › tanzania A glimpse into the Iraqw people's history - The Citizen Tanzania Zulu Kinship Terminology over a Century • Adam Kuper Abstract In 1866 the Rev. Abraham sent Morgan a Zulu kinship terminology, which Morgan classified as "Malayan." Later sources report an "Iroquois" system of cousin terms for the Zulu. This paper examines the evidence for a shift from Hawaiian to Iroquois in the Zulu terminology, using sources published between 1871 and 1966. The argument is then broadened by a contextualization of the Zulu terminology with reference to other Nguni kinship terminologies and to terminologies of the Sotho language family. The conclusion is that the Zulu system has always, probably, shown both "Hawaiian" and "Iroquois" tendencies, and that a historical shift would be difficult to demonstrate. Some sociological correlations are touched upon. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/jar.35.3.3629910?journalCode=jar #HebrewIsraelites  #Christians #Saints #Moors  #FightingNeoNazis #Muslims #Jews #Pastors #Preachers #GenderWars  #WeNeedBalance #Exploremore #NWO  #BlackHistory #IndigenousHistory #BlackNews #BlackBusinesses #BlackTravelers #BlackArtist  #BlackWomen #BlackLove  #TheUSHegemonyIsOver #BlackTech  #YourBodyIsTheTemple  #Cryptocurrency  #ReparationsNow #BlackLiberation #NoJesusForMePlease  #KnowledgeOfGoodAndEvil #IroquoisZuluBantuTerminologyCorrelation

There is so much power gained from studying BLK leaders. I say often, we should never allow WP to teach us history or about God. God is seen through the struggle and resilience of BLK leaders from the past and present. #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistorymatters #blackhistory

Yesterday we gathered to honor and celebrate the epitome of “Black Girl Magic”, the legacy of Mrs. Daisy Bates, a leader in the City of Little Rock, the state of Arkansas, and the United States! We thank God for all he has done, and for our leaders paving the way for a brighter future. Daisy Bates, a pivotal leader in the American Civil Rights Movement, was commemorated with a statue in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. This honor reflects her instrumental role in the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957, where she guided and supported the nine African American students who integrated Little Rock Central High School. Bates’ statue not only celebrates her unwavering commitment to education and equality but also serves as a constant reminder of the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Her legacy is enshrined among the nation’s founders and heroes, symbolizing her lasting impact on America’s history. Thank you & a job well done Mrs. Bates 🙏🏽 •••••••• #blackhistory #daisybates #daisybateselementary #littlerocknine #littlerock #arkansas #arkansashistory #history #blackhistoryfacts #blacklivesmatter #blackexcellence #blackgirlmagic

In this revisionist history, Howard W. French attempts to reframe how we view the rise of the Western world. It feels like a much needed story to discuss, both because he argues it very persuasively, and because it is not a new argument. In Born in Blackness, French pieces together the historiography of European and New World interaction with Africa, which has been relegated to all but a footnote in classrooms across the world (I know it was where I went to school). French highlights notable neglected work such as that by Eric Williams and W.E.B. du Bois, among others. His argument is for a centering of Africa in the foundation of power and wealth of Europe and the United States. The search for gold, its extraction. The intrinsic link between the sugar industry, slavery, and industrialization. The ties between the Haitian Revolution and the United States, cotton and U.S. power. This is a rare book that I will be following up on to see the reaction of the academic world, to see if it is a part of something that causes a shift over time. Whether it tips the balance of the scale in your mind, or tears the foundation out of what you thought you knew, Born in Blackness is a book that ought to be widely read. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #bookstagram #borninblackness #howardwfrench #liverightpublishing #africanhistory #blackhistory #westernhistory #capitalism #modernworldhistory #slavery #atlanticslavetrade #ageofdiscovery #history #historybooks #readhistory #bookworm #booksbooksbooks

Afro Music Distinctions (AMD) are musical elements inherent in the music of African Americans. These distinctions are “Africanisms” remaining as reminders of Africa's continuing influence on culture in America. They are present in almost every form of music created in America. www.bruceahenry.com #evolutionofafricanamericanmusic #blackmusichistory #africanamericanhistory #blackhistory #bruceahenry #bahlove
