For #historymirrormonday today I'm sharing a sneak peek of a really neat photoshoot I did last week with my recently made 1907-8 dress. It's at a newly opening attraction here in Kingston, Ontario Canada and the dress was made using a pattern I took from an original dress in the historical clothing collection of the @aeartcentre also here in Kingston. This pattern will eventually be added to the others that are already part of the open-access Patterns for All Bodies project on the art centre's website; there's also a link in my bio. THE FIRST WEALTHIEST BLACK FAMILY IN THE US: Junius G. Groves 1859 - 1925. Farmer, landowner, and businessman Junius G. Groves was one of the wealthiest Black Americans of the early 20th century. Born a slave in Green County, Kentucky, Groves was later liberated and joined other freedmen in the “Great Exodus” to Kansas in 1879, eventually finding work as a farmhand. Impressed with his strong work ethic and production, Groves’ employer offered him nine acres of land to farm on shares. By 1884, he and his wife Matilda had saved enough to purchase 80 acres of land near Edwardsville, Kansas. So successful was their venture that, just four years later, they had acquired a total of 2,000 acres and replaced their one-room shanty with a 22-room mansion. Groves made a name for himself as a potato grower, producing as many as 721,500 bushels in one year – far and away more than any other farmer – and earning the title of “Potato King of the World.” He also operated a general store, maintained several orchards, and had investments in various mining and banking interests. Groves worked the farm until his death in 1925. 27th Street, facing south towards 30th Avenue from Newtown Avenue, circa 1900s and 2024. 27th Street, previously named Cooper Street, was laid out sometime by the 1880s. Originally, the land was once a part of the estate of Robert Moore Blackwell but by the time of his death in 1863, his lands were broken up and sold off. A street was planned here as far back as 1873 but it was supposed to be named Oliver Street. Most of the older housing stock on this street were constructed between the 1880s and 1900s. These quaint houses were the homes of local shopkeepers, clerks, and workers who were employed at a variety of small factories. With the recent change of zoning, most of these homes face endangerment, some have already been demolished for more “upscale” apartment buildings.

Presenting Monsieur Georges Feydeau (1862-1921). Nominated by mitchell.nevillteague , Feydeau was a French playwright eminent during the Belle Époque era. His farcical plays written between 1886 and 1914 are particularly of note. The plays of Feydeau are marked by closely observed characters, with whom his audiences could identify, plunged into fast-moving comic plots of mistaken identity, attempted adultery, split-second timing and a precariously happy ending. After the great success they enjoyed in his lifetime they were neglected after his death, until the 1940s and 1950s, when productions by Jean-Louis Barrault and the Comédie-Française led a revival of interest in his works, at first in Paris and subsequently worldwide. Feydeau’s personal life was marred by depression, unsuccessful gambling and divorce. In 1919 his mental condition deteriorated sharply and he spent his final two years in a mental institution at Rueil (now Rueil-Malmaison), near Paris. Presenting “Apollon the Mighty”. Born in Évreux, France, in 1862. This French strongman was famous for his grip strength. Can you imagine being held in his vice-like grip? Using his weighty beefy being to flower press you against the mattress/wall/floor/anywhere! Beads of sweat falling like raindrops down his forehead and his hirsute chest as he goes to work to satisfy his lust and your deepest desires. My mind has wondered so…back to the facts… He was the son of Jacques and Elisabeth (née Brémond) and was descended from a family of locally well-known giants. His grandfather Jacques Uni, born in 1772, was 2.03 m (6 feet and 8 inches) tall, while the average male height in France in 1800 was only 163.7 cm (5 feet and 4.45 inches). At aged 14 he ran away from his parents' house and joined the traveling Italian circus ‘Caramagne’ at Lunel near his home town. During a performance, the police seized him and returned him to his father. Eventually his parents allowed him to leave home and work with Felix Bernard and Pietro Dalmasso. In 1889 Uni took part in a Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the International Athletic Arenas in Bordeaux. Also in 1889 Uni competed against Batta (Charles Estienne 1866-1939) in Lille 118 kilo train-car wheels (with an enormous axle which was much too thick even for the hands of Batta). Batta could only lift it to his shoulders, resting it lightly on his chest for a minute. Apollon was reported to have lifted the weight easily. Part of Uni's stage act was called ‘Escaping Prisoner’, during which he would bend the tempered iron bars of a cage through which he would then pass. He performed this routine at the Folies Bergère, among other venues. In 1913 Uni met with a severe accident during a performance in Vichy, France. When attempting to hold back two motorcars with outstretched hands he cried out in pain and suddenly dropped to the ground, having torn the muscles of his arms and burst a blood vessel.
