In 1970, my grandmother, Margo, joined union activist Frank Lopez in founding the cultural arts oasis @plazadelaraza—its core concept inspired by a Lorca poem Margo loved: “The song, The poem, The picture, Is only water from the well of people. It should be given back to them in a cup of beauty That they may drink & in drinking understand themselves...” In my last post I mentioned a peep into Margo’s world via a note in the back of an old Keats poetry book. I’d love to share that note with you here: “Waldorf Astoria, 1934: Ina Claire was here tonight with some prince— Ambrose came over to tell me that she wanted to meet me— I was just thrilled, thrilled— When I got to her table, she acted as if I were doing her an honor, she said ‘when you came out and crossed yourself. I was shocked, but when you finished I was convinced, thoroughly, that the dining room of the Waldorf was exactly the right place for your dance— you have ideas and ideals, stick to them. You have a conviction that is so beautiful— never compromise.’ And the prince was so marvelous, saying that it thrilled him to see the music that he loved, “cordova,” danced as he had only dreamed and music like “alegrias” that was so “benalle,” & could be heard in any café in Europe, danced in a way that made it a revelation. It thrilled me very much that he got the effect I had so desired when designing the purple dress with the red underneath. What great happiness to receive intelligent compliments from the kind of people I long to associate with— still, I know that I don’t deserve it yet— they are so sensitive that they sensed what I have inside— I am very far from producing it— but it is great encouragement that they recognize the seed from where the flower should someday spring— still my seed is so far underground yet, it is still dark— But God, please, please don’t let it, by circumstance, dry up before it blooms. Please let me be a flower—an exquisite flower—people need a little taking out of themselves, a little happiness—would that I could give it. I have incredible conceit to think myself capable of it—but it is inside. Work, thought, will, may make what now seems an impossible dream true.”

"I got a reputation for my trenchermanship early in life, and when I was going to school down in Tallahassee one of the guys in our group wanted to call me a cannibal; but he mispronounced it as "can-i-bol." So the other guys' in the band would call me Canibol more to tease him than to tease me. But of course other folks, not being in on the joke, distorted it and it became "Cannonball." I got into jazz when I was a high school teacher in Fort Lauderdale. I had matriculated to New York University. I was in graduate school there in 1955 but I never did go to class. It happened through Oscar Pettiford: he's been gone for some time and a lot of people don't know anything about him,don't know what his contribution has been, but Oscar had a group playing in the Cafe Bohemia in the Village, not far from New York University. I went there to hear the group, because he had a classic group: Kenny Clarke playing drums, Horace Silver playing piano, and he was playing bass, that was enough. Plus Jerome Richardson and Jimmy Cleveland were in his band, but Jerome was on a record date. There's this courtesy factor among professional musicians, if a guy's got a record date or a studio date or a pit gig, he's permitted to do that gig and somebody else can sub for him. But Jerome's sub hadn't come in. My brother Nat, and the Cooper brothers: Buster Cooper who formerly worked with Duke Ellington, and Steve Cooper, were there; we'd had a rehearsal and we were there to see Cleve and hear the band." No Retakes If You Move During WWII, American servicemen who were on shore leave in Hawaii frequented bars and tattoo parlors that offered studio photo portraits posed in front of scenic Pacific-themed backdrops. Some backdrops, like the volcanic tuff cone of Diamond Head on Oahu are identifiable as known landmarks, while others are more generic tropical scenes. For an extra fee, sailors could pose with a “hula girl” in a grass skirt or provocative outfit. To stop and smell the roses 🌹 It's not me sharing too many random photos on my feed. Sorry not sorry 😆 • • • • • • I would like to share some random thoughts about a TV series that I recently watched on Netflix named 'Queen of Tears'. It is a must-watch for anyone who loves Korean romantic comedy dramas. Even though I'm picky when it comes to choosing movies, TV series, or shows, this one stood out to me as unique and meaningful. Forbes described it as "Many K-dramas end with 'happily ever after,' but 'Queen of Tears' starts that way," and I completely agreed. It's unlike any other Korean drama that I've ever seen. My eldest and I enjoyed it so much that she even wrote a short article about the beautiful details of the finale. Another big plus for QoT is that the original soundtrack is excellent, even though I don't understand Korean. This song is one of my new favorites 🤍 In short, although it wasn't a perfect drama, we didn't regret watching it 🤌🏻 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 Photography brings us joy!
