Kleiner Rückblick auf eine Stadt, die es uns durch ihre Vielseitigkeit und ihren Charme einfach angetan hat. San Francisco ist für uns immer eine Reise wert. Zu diesem Entschluss sind wir gestern erneut gekommen, als wir uns über Städtetrips und unsere bevorstehende Reise nach Auckland unterhalten haben. Dazu eine kurze Geschichte zur Entstehung dieses Fotos. Wir saßen beide zusammen im Gemeinschaftsraum unseres Hostels. Der Check Out bereits abgeschlossen und die Backpacks fertig gepackt für unseren Flug nach Tahiti. Kurz bevor wir in Richtung Airport aufbrechen wollten, kam in Eric ein Gefühl auf. Diesem Drang musste er einfach nachgehen. Also machte er sich auf, mit seiner Kamera die steilen Straßen San Franciscos zu erklimmen. Er wollte unbedingt noch vor unserer Abreise die Möglichkeit haben, dieses Foto bei guten Lichtverhältnissen zu knipsen. Wir waren bereits zwei Tage zuvor gemeinsam dort, doch die Sonne schien zu hell in die Straßenzüge hinein und sorgten, in Erics Augen, für nicht zufriedenstellende Fotos. Nach erledigter Arbeit kam Eric glücklich und zufrieden zurück ins Hostel. Er konnte nun voller Tatendrang und mit einem guten Gefühl den Weg zu einer neuen Destination antreten. Unsere Zeit in Neuseeland war nach 9 Wochen vorbei und es war so richtig gut dort. Unser Roadtrip aber würde noch weitergehen - zum Glück - nur auf einem neuen Kontinent: Amerika! Zunächst fuhren wir nach 12 Stunden Flug und der Landung in San Francisco mit Uber ins Motel in der Nähe des berühmten Pier 39 - Fisherman`s Wharf. Dort verbrachten wir 3 Nächte - um anzukommen und San Francisco zu erkunden. Wir werden dieses Jahr nicht oft in irgendwelchen Unterkünften, sondern überwiegend in Campern schlafen. Es fühlte sich jetzt nach den vergangenen 9 Wochen gleich etwas seltsam an. Wir waren schon oft in den USA und lieben es hier. Die Landschaft ist großartig und die Leute sind unglaublich nett und einfach cool. San Francisco war, so wie früher schon, beeindruckend, aber verdammt teuer. Natürlich sind wir auf die Golden Gate Bridge gegangen und haben sie knapp bis zur Hälfte überquert. Wir waren bei der kurvigen Lombardstreet, sind mit der Tram über die Hügel der Stadt gefahren und haben uns lässig raushängen lassen. Wer aber zu viert per Fahrrad die Stadt erkunden will, ist schnell weit über 100 Dollar los. Ein Besuch der Gefängnisinsel Alcatraz würde zwischen 300 und 400 Dollar kosten, obwohl sie per Boot in ganz wenigen Minuten erreichbar ist. All solche Dinge haben wir uns verkniffen. Und was das Essen angeht: es mussten ein paar Tage Fastfood sein, alles andere geht preislich gar nicht, es sei denn, man kocht selbst. Und so haben wir unsere Tage dort mit einer Mikrowellenlasagne beendet. Fazit: San Francisco bietet viel und ist der perfekte Einstieg für einen USA-Aufentalt. Nach 3 Tagen reichte es dann aber auch, insbesondere dem Geldbeutel und natürlich, weil es für uns ja mit dem Roadtrip weitergehen sollte. Doch dazu bald mehr. We had a short stopover in San Francisco so decided to ride the iconic cable cars up and down the hills. The hills were too steep to use horse drawn cars so between 1873 and 1890 there were 23 cable lines established although only three remain today and are now the world's last manually operated cable car system. They are now a National Historic Landmark and are still pulled by a cable under the road driven by a central power house. Originally coal fired and steam driven but now fully electric with each line using a 500 hp motor. The cars can't be run in reverse and must be manually turned around at the end of each line. The cars are unloaded and pushed on to a turntable, spun around and then pushed off again all by hand but it all looked well balanced to us. San Francisco: Round up of day one 🇺🇸 Started off taking in the views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from the bay 🌉 We then went to Boudin’s bakery to check out their amazing sourdough bread, with some made into shapes of teddy bears 🥖 It was then time for a walk up to Lombard Street, which is one of the windiest roads in the world and it’s adorned with beautiful gardens 🌺 Next, we walked back down to Fisherman’s Wharf and got on the famous cable cars which took us both down the hill and then back down again 🚎 It would have been rude not to take in the Doubtfire house 🏠 Little Italy was next on the list, along with Chinatown, but we had to stop at Tony’s Pizza for some lunch, which was the best pizza I’ve ever had 🇮🇹 Afterwards, we decided to head back to the hotel, because it was late evening by this point, but we stopped in Ghirardelli Square for a beer and the.
