The MidWinter 1894 Fair held in Golden Gate Park. This photo was taken from atop Strawberry Hill. The city, like the rest of the nation, was reeling from the effects of the economic depression of 1893. The fair featured thousands of exhibits and attracted many travelers. [American Dream 01: San Francisco] 👕 Prima di uscire dall’aeroporto mi vedevo già in tshirt, ma mi sbagliavo. Il clima in California è di tipo mediterraneo, praticamente lo stesso che c’è in Sicilia, con qualche grado in più e meno pioggia. ☁️ Fa eccezione però proprio San Francisco, quasi sempre nuvolosa e mai con temperature alte. 😅 È stata una delle domande che ho fatto più spesso: “Is the weather always like that?” - “Yes”. Clima a parte, la città è molto bella in modo non “immediato”, nel senso che bisogna scoprirla un po’, come accade a Lisbona a cui assomiglia molto soprattutto per il continuo sali e scendi di strade, alcune con pendenze davvero importanti. 🏃♂️ Camminare a San Francisco è allo stesso tempo divertente e faticoso. Ancora mi chiedo come facciano a fare jogging. Supereroi. Le differenze architettoniche si mescolano bene, dallo stile coloniale ai moderni grattacieli. ⚠️ Sicurezza: è vero che la situazione non è delle migliori, quindi è importante sapere dove poter andare e dove no. Ad esempio il quartiere di Tenderloin è da evitare ed è proprio confinante con Union Square, la piazza centrale. ❓ Cosa vedere e fare a San Francisco? 👇 Ecco un primo elenco di ciò che mi è piaciuto di più: • Le strade ed i palazzi in generale. • Chinatown con il suo Dragon Gate e la confinante North Beach (ovvero Little Italy, assolutamente più vera di quella di New York). • Il Golden Gate Bridge. Quando dici “ponte” pensi a quello, come l’emoji su iPhone 🌁 guarda caso con la nebbia. • Il tram, anch’esso iconico. Sembra una giostra. • il Pier 39 con i leoni marini e Fisherman’s in generale, ovvero l’antico quartiere di pescatori, oggi pieno di ristoranti e attività per turisti. • Non l’ho visitata per mancanza di tempo, ma anche solo da lontano Alcatraz fa un certo effetto. Mention Alcatraz and everyone immediately thinks of its past as the infamous penitentiary that housed notorious criminals like Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and the Birdman. However it also had a long stint as a military fortification and prison and in its later history was the stage for an occupation as part of the Native Americans civil rights movement. Today, under the guardianship of the National Park Service, Alcatraz receives over 1.5 million visitors from all states and a plethora of countries. Self-guided audio tours with old recordings from prison guards and former inmates allow the visitor to experience a slice of the past. As you wander through the main two story cell block and other areas that are just as they were when the penitentiary closed in 1963, you might get a chill that has nothing to do with the cold weather. The lighthouse is still functional and important as many tankers make their way from the Pacific and under the Golden Gate bridge through the bay skirting San Francisco and again under the Bay bridge before reaching the Oakland port. The lighthouse is still functional and important as many tankers make their way from the Pacific and under the Golden Gate bridge through the bay skirting San Francisco and again under the Bay bridge before reaching the Oakland port.
