Lou decided we had to walk up to coit tower so he could get treats from the nice man at the concession stand. This was not my walk plan for today, but he knows every turn to make to get there from my office. His memory of who feeds him treats and how to get back to them is very impressive. #coittower #lunchwalk #sfviews

💌 Postcard from San Francisco, California - 💾 Save this for later when you visit San Francisco! ... We have been to San Francisco multiple times, especially in the last few months! Here are a few of our favorite FREE (or cheap) locations to visit: 📍 Battery Spencer (📸 1 & 2) - Parking is limited & this is one of the busiest Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints (for obvious reasons), so we suggest going early on the weekends or during the week 📍 Kirby Beach (📸 3 & 4) - Only accessible by walking or biking down (& back up). We had the entire beach to ourselves & the Golden Gate Bridge is much closer than the picture makes it look 💎 📍 Point Bonita Lighthouse (📸 5) - DON'T MISS THIS! Only open Friday - Monday 12:30 to 3:30 for FREE. If you want to experience sunset, you will have to get tickets for $16. Get tickets at https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/10088963/ticket/10088964 📍 Pier 39 (📸 6) - Famously known for its shops, restaurants, & these hilarious sea lions. This is a great place to people watch & for entertainment. This is also a great place to get information for tours too. We suggest checking Viator for potential discounted prices! 📍 Coit Tower & the insanely steep streets of SF (📸 7) - Coit Tower is a tall lookout tower that sits a few blocks back from Pier 39 & it really is somewhat of a hidden gem! The views from the parking lot are pretty amazing, but if you want to get even better views, take the elevator or stairs to the top for $10 & be prepared for some beautiful Bay Views! Oh, and yes... the hills are crazy steep, especially if you are riding a bike, don't underestimate them 😜 📍 Legion Of Honor Art Museum & the Sutro Baths (📸 8 & 9) - Since we had our bikes and no lock, we couldn't experience the museum sadly, but they have this mini glass structure that looks like the Louvre in Paris. The grounds are stunning, and there are multiple walking paths along the ocean cliff side & an absolutely beautiful golf course. Next time, we will catch sunset at the Sutro Baths! 📍 SkyStar Ferris Wheel (📸 10) - $18pp for 4 rotations. Cool to see the city, but we found better views for free 🤷‍♀️ (imho) 🍻 Ash & Nate . . .

San Francisco. April 2024. Sunny, windy day. We rode the train from the city to the south, rode the rail to Chinatown to have a delicious lunch at House of Nanking, walked up up up to Coit Tower, rode the bus down to the pier, had Irish coffee for the first time ever at the Buena Vista, then back south to have dinner with a good friend. Great little visit! We’ll be back, lovely City! #CoitTower #SanFrancisco #Coit #California #thecity

Murals inside Coit Tower Coit Tower, was built in 1933 as a memorial to its benefactor, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who left a third of her fortune for the beautification of the city she loved. Upon entering the tower at the ground level, the visitor is almost overwhelmed with the vibrant frescoes painted on the interior circular wall by a collective of artists employed by the Public Works of Art Project. These murals depict scenes of daily life in San Francisco and California at that time. Thus this bulilding is not just a portal into the city's past, but with it's perch on Telegraph Hill offering panoramic views of the city and the bay, also forever connected to the present. History reports that as the tower began to take shape, some local artists claimed that the building was a mockery because they assumed (as do many still today) that architects Brown and Howard designed the monument in the shape of a (phallic) fire hose nozzle in memory of Lillie Coit's fondness for the Fire Department. They denied that, but what is absolutely true is that Mrs. Coit loved and admired San Francisco firefighters from a young age, when she was caught in a building on fire. She had a particular fondness for the Knickerbocker Engine Company No.5. However, the local rumor was (and perhaps still is) that the phallic structure was not a co-incidence and because it could be seen from just about anywhere with its perch on top of Telegraph Hill, an utter outrage! This rumor was fueled by the fact that Mrs. Coit cut quite a dashing figure. She married a wealthy caller at the old San Francisco Stock and Exchange Board at 19 and was widowed at 41. Then she spent her single years "cavorting" in Paris. Think what you will! I for one, can totally appreciate that this singular tower, which the city of San Francisco lights up in various colors for special occasions, is magnificent. San Francisco would not be the same without it! The only remaining part of the former Odd Fellows Cemetery and the only active burial space with availability in San Francisco is the columbarium, built Bernard S. Cahill in 1898 (swipe to the last slide for his wife’s memorial on the exterior). The neoclassical building is a wonder for so many reasons, not just it’s at hire and artistry, but its survival. on the second slide, I was standing in the public street, which is a cul-de-sac that terminates at the columbarium. This is a completely residential Street. There is a park across from the end of the street which was part of the former cemetery, it’s a quiet and peaceful place to reflect, but still completely unexpected in what is today a normal residential neighborhood. It’s easy to forget that it wants stood in the cemetery and that everything around it would have been burials. The exterior is a combination of sales and new inurnments including in the replica of the Coit Tower. The columbarium now is owned by Dignity Memorial and branch of SCI the largest funeral company in the US. #cemetery #cemeteries #cemeteriesandgraveyards #tombwithaview #cemeterylovers #cemetaryphotography #cemetery_photography #cemeterywandering #columbarium #cremation #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscocolumbarium #lostcemeteriesofsanfrancisco #coittower #cemeteryloversofinstagram #cemeteriesofinstagram #taphophilesofinstagram #taphophile #taphophilia
