Last week I teased a trip I was taking for my birthday at the end of July. Then a few days later I opened up that it was an all-encompassing trip to the Bay Area. I'll be shooting to snap everything the area has to offer for transit: MUNI, BART, Caltrain, VTA, ACE, Capital Corridor, (maybe Sacramento Light Rail too?), SMART, and I'm probably missing a train/light rail operator, but I won't miss it when I'm out there. I'll be spending my actual birthday at Ocean Beach and maybe a baseball game that night (Oracle Park is beautiful btw). Cable Car 24 picked me up all the way to Beach & Hyde on PH Line after I visited the Cable Car Museum. Cable Car 24 was built in 1887 by Mahoney Brothers & dedicated to Willie Mays from SF Giants. This cable car was the last one that ran on the Washington-Jackson Line before it was closed down & it’s the only active cable car that left SF twice. In 1873, San Francisco was a city on the rise. But its steep hills posed a major challenge for transportation, especially for the horse-drawn carriages that struggled to climb them. Enter Andrew Smith Hallidie, a Scottish-born inventor who witnessed the plight of these horses. Inspired by cable-powered mining systems, he developed a revolutionary solution: the cable car. Hallidie's system was ingenious. An endless cable, running beneath the street, was gripped by the cable car and pulled up the hills. Grips, skilled operators perched on the rear platform, controlled the cable and brakes, navigating the inclines with precision. The first cable car line, on Clay Street, opened in 1873, and within a decade, 23 lines crisscrossed the city, carrying passengers up and down its iconic hills. The cable cars became more than just transportation; they were a symbol of progress and urban sophistication. The cable car system faced its first major challenge in 1890 with the introduction of electric streetcars. These were cheaper and easier to operate, and many thought they would spell the end of the cable cars. However, San Franciscans, with their love for tradition and the unique charm of the cable cars, fought to preserve them. The 1906 earthquake and fire nearly ended the cable car's reign. Many lines were destroyed, and the city faced the difficult decision of rebuilding or modernizing. Again, San Franciscans rallied, and the cable cars were restored, becoming a symbol of the city's resilience and spirit. Today, only three cable car lines remain: the Powell-Mason, the Hyde-Beach, and the California Street.
