Economist Lim Mah Hui and former state transport engineer Lim Thean Heng have questioned the rationale for the proposed Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, citing its exorbitant cost after the extension that would link it to Seberang Perai. The duo said a poorly conceived and executed LRT system could lead to financial burdens on the state and the public that could last decades. “The LRT will be a financial, technical and environmental albatross that could lead to losses of about RM600 million per year,” Mah Hui said in a joint press conference with Thean Heng on the proposed Penang LRT project at Aliran’s office here today. Last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the federal government will fund the development of the LRT in Penang. The LRT alignment, which was originally from Bayan Lepas to Komtar, will now be from Bayan Lepas to Komtar to Tanjung Bungah and Air Itam. after a week of steady mobility -- i can comfortably walk a mile! yay!! 🚶🏻♀️🚶🏻♀️-- it was time to push myself to see if i was stable enough to ride public transit since i still can't get around on bike, even if it IS #bikemonth 😭😭 walked to nearest train station ✔️ found a senior/disabled seat without much effort (this is why i avoided rush hour!) ✔️ made it up and down stairs and escalators with a cane (the latter were a bit tricky, but i made it!) ✔️ stopped at the @metrolosangeles wilshire-western station for the #bikelocker rollout in hopes of getting good swag and a raffle entry for an E-BIKE... but the metro reps wrapped up more than an hour early and i missed them 😡 another train ride and an uphill walk to bunker hill for lunch ✔️ by now, i was done with stairs and switched to elevators to get from street to concourse to platform for my last train ride back home ✔️ was very careful while crossing olympic by bergamot station in #santamonica due to the #sliplane from westbound olympic to 26th street. according to wikipedia: "[a slip lane] allows users to bypass the lights when they turn. 🚋 MTS is proposing the Copper Line, a new East County Connector to service stations between El Cajon Transit Center and Santee Trolley Station. The proposed Copper Line would serve each station every 15 minutes most of the day and run from approximately 5:00 a.m. – midnight. Public transit and automobiles played a major role in both the success and struggles that befell the Coliseum building. As the Twin City Rapid Transit Company’s streetcar lines expanded, they created new residential neighborhoods outside of downtown Minneapolis – and new commercial districts along the streetcar line to serve the growing communities. The Coliseum, located at the intersection of two major streetcar lines (similar to other major spaces like the Sears Building at Lake and Chicago), housed a department store, dance hall, barber, bowling alley, and more to serve the needs of the community. 🚌🚎🚋🚃 After WWII, auto-centered retail began to take over as interstate highways were built and automobile ownership increased. Shoppers flocked to the suburbs, preferring the large parking lots and discount stores to the limited parking opportunities available at the streetcar-oriented commercial districts in the city. In addition, the demise of the streetcar system in 1954 led to high volumes of automobile traffic along these former streetcar lines (now primary thoroughfares), making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate these busy commercial intersections. Remnants of this car-oriented history can still be seen in the numerous car lots along Lake Street. The Coliseum largely held out, however, due in part to the foresighted decision to add a parking lot in the late 1920’s (check out the restored Freeman's Parking sign on the East side of the building!) and the consistency of its long-term tenants. 🚗🚙🛻🚕 @coliseummpls is scheduled to reopen in June! Day 11: The Stockholm Metro is one gigantic art gallery with over 90 of the 100 stations featuring artworks created by some 150 artists. Our final stop on the blue line is Kungsträdgården. From visitstockholm.com: Kungsträdgården is one of Stockholm’s oldest public parks. The name, roughly meaning “The King’s Garden”, is derived from the area’s royal history. Between 1643 and 1825 it was the site of the majestic Makalös Palace, and a beautiful French garden. After Makalös burned down, the site was used for military exercises. Finally, in 1875, the park landed in the care of the Stockholm City Council, which in turn opened it for the public. “Almost everything on the station tells the story of the site above ground”, says Marie Andersson, subway art guide. “The color scheme – red, white and green – is a reference to the old French formal garden and statues around the station are actually replicas of Makalös Palace’s exterior art”. Another unique feature of Kungsträdgården is its fauna. The station is the only place in Northern Europe where the cave-dwelling Lessertia dentichelis-spider can be found. Presumably, the species hitched a ride on equipment and machines traveling from Southern Europe when the station was being built. “Nobody knows exactly how they ended up here”, continues Marie Andersson. “But they seem to be thriving. I saw one just yesterday, as a matter of fact. Rådhuset was named after the court house above and designed by artist Sigvard Olsson. According to him, the colour chosen for the walls can be found in the North African Atlas Mountains, and should also be found in the mountains below Stockholm Court House. 5-10. Silvert Lindblom is the artist behind Vastra Skogen’s colourful mosaic tiled art chosen to contrast against the dark walls and as a reference to subways of the 1950s. This station also has the country’s longest escalator measuring 66 meters (217 feet) long, and descending 33 meters (108 feet) into the ground. This makes it the ninth-longest in the world and the fifth-largest in Western Europe. There are many tiled murals depicting scientific and matehmatical concepts at Universitetet making it a must-visit for any science enthusiasts, although everything is obviously in Swedish. 8-11. Morby Centrum is at the end of the red line and looks like a pastel-coloured cave in white, pink and celadon. We bought the 24 hour metro pass and spent ~3 hours after dinner riding the red and blue lines beginning at T-Centralen which is ~10 minutes from our hotel. Come check out with me red line with me! 1-4. The Scandi blue & white vibes at T-Centralen by Per Olof Ultvedt, a Swedish sculptor, painter, illustrator, graphic artist and film artist. 5-8. Stadion was one of Stockholm’s first cave stations, a controversial subject when it was built in 1973, which is why artists Åke Pallarp and Enno Hallek wanted to bring the sky underground. 9-14. The art at Tekniska Högskolan was done by Lennart Mörk and features a common theme of technology, the four elements, and the laws of nature. The research finds significant variation between the effects of remote work on vehicle miles driven and on mass-transit ridership across the U.S. “A one percent decrease in onsite workers leads to a roughly one percent reduction in [automobile] vehicle miles driven, but a 2.3 percent reduction in mass transit ridership,” says Yunhan Zheng (MCP ‘21, SM ‘21, PhD ‘24), an MIT postdoc who is co-author of a the study.
