I don’t find reading about trauma, and relating it to my own experience of PTSD, much fun. I do find it educational and enlightening in a “that’s a normal reaction to experiencing trauma” way. Apr 9, 2019 HAND TO FOOT POSE 🤚🦶 The #standinghandtofoot requires deep concentration and balance. This position focuses strongly on the supporting leg by slowly raising your other leg while holding the foot or big toe, and then gently extending the raised leg straight out to the side of the body. Hand-to-foot pose offers many physical benefits. It opens the hips, strengthens the ankles, stabilizes the core, and stretches the large leg muscles. This yoga pose really works the small muscles in the ankles and feet. Practice some simple ankle rotations before attempting this pose. As a beginner, it might be difficult to hold your foot while keeping your knees straight. When first attempting this pose make sure not to overstretch the hamstrings by keeping the raised leg bent and take hold of the knee instead of the foot or toe. If you can't keep your knees straight, the yoga straps really helped me achieve this pose! Mar 25, 2019 WoooHoo I'm finally able to do a #handstand Well, kinda lol! The pillars helped a bit Been trying to do a handstand foreverrrr!! My arms are the weakest part of my body and it's been such a struggle to support all my weight on them. Now that l've been training my arms for a while I'm now able to do one yayyy!! So obviously the best benefit you get from doing handstands is building your arm strength, but that isn't all. Being upside down and standing on your hands forces you to engage your core big time! It takes all of the strength that you can muster in your abdominal muscles as well as your back muscles to stay upright and balanced • Since you need to stay stable, it forces you to use various muscles in your core to achieve that balance. Being upside down requires you to keep making adjustments to stay that way and many of those adjustments need to be done with your core * You don't have to do a bunch of sit-ups to get those abs you always wanted, you can do handstands as well to build your abs and you can have fun while doing them too!! #mentalhealth #mentalillness #thereishope #mentalwellness #breakthestigma #openup #awareness #strong #mentalhealthmatters

Mar 18, 2019 THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN☀️ Sun exposure is by far the best way to boost your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiency is incredibly common, particularly in darker-skinned people. A vitamin D deficiency is usually easy to fix by simply eating more vitamin D rich foods, fatty fish, dairy products, and increasing your sun exposure! Midday is the best time to get vitamin D, as the sun is at its highest point and your body will absorb it most efficiently. Although sunlight is great for vitamin D, too much sunlight can be dangerous as well and can cause sunburn, eye damage, skin aging, heat stroke and skin cancer. So try to limit the time you spend exposed to direct sunlight, just 10-30 mins a day is sufficient enough! But if you're planning to stay in the sun for a while, it's best to apply sunscreen after 10-30 minutes to help prevent sunburn and skin cancer. Inversions, like the shoulder stand, can reverse your blood flow so that when you stand back up, a fresh wave of blood shoots through your body!! Feb 13, 2019 FLYING CROW POSE 🐦‍⬛ Not quite the #flyingcrowpose, l'm actually doing a simplified variation of this pose with one knee resting on the ground instead of the arms So it's kind of a stepping stone to the flying crow pose (where you use the back of your arms as shelves for your knees and lean forward). This is a veryyyy difficult pose that defies gravity and requires extreme core strength in order to lift majority of your weight above your shoulders. So if you're like me, and still practicing on mastering this pose, you can modify it like I did in this pic!! Using a block placed under your feet prior to take off can help give the body a little extra height to make this pose easier to obtain. Blocks under the shoulders can also help balance the body while the arms work on building strength. The flying crow is an arm balance that looks scarier than it is to practice. It challenges you to focus on lifting versus falling. By supporting all your weight on your arms and hands, it requires you to face the fear of face-planting into the floor (so put a pillow in front of you while you practice!) Feb 2, 2019 FLEXITARIAN DIET 🍎 The flexitarian diet, also known as the "lazy vegetarian diet" LOL, is simply the combo of the two words - flexible and vegetarian. It's basically a more open approach to vegetarianism, so that you can still enjoy the benefits of loading up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, without ditching animal products entirely. It's like a vegetarian-ish way of eating since it does carry the basic principles and benefits of a plant-based diet, along with the inclusion of some animal proteins. While vegetarians strictly consume foods such as tofu, quinoa, tons of produce, and other veggie-focused options, no foods are taken away or strictly forbidden to flexitarians. This diet is an easier alternative to going full vegan that still advocates actively decreasing meat consumption. Like its name, the diet is flexible!! But, there are some guidelines on how much meat you can eat. For example, it's suggested you consume only a card-deck-sized portion of chicken, pork or fish per meal, and although steak and beef are allowed, I chose to omit red meat COMPLETELY from my diet. Following even a semi-vegetarian diet can lower body weight compared to those who eat meat regularly, as well as lower incidences of metabolic disease and lower risk for type 2 diabetes - ALL health issues I'm currently combatting. Plus, a diet lower in animal products and higher in vegetables, fruits, legumes & grains is pretty easy to follow. YESSS, I did try going vegan for a bit, and I'm well aware of every last benefit going vegetarian has (it's better for the planet, better for your health and, of course, kinder to the animals, but the idea of saying good-bye to Thai chicken satay forever seemed too much of a sacrifice. With the flexitarian diet, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. Jan 27, 2019 FLEXIBILITY 🤸🏻 Seeing how flexible l've become in just a few months still BOGGLES my mind!! The last time I was able to do the splits I was in elementary school! Improving my flexibility produced such a wide range of physical benefits and had an enormous positive effect on my overall well-being. When you develop strength & flexibility in your body you'll be able to withstand a lot more physical stress and rid your body of any muscle imbalances, which will reduce your chance of getting injured. Working on stretching my body really opened up my muscles, and when my muscles are looser and less tense, I experience fewer aches and pains!! 6 6 6 Plus, the more flexibility you have, the less likely you'll experience muscle cramps during physical activities.I was stiff as a board when I first started yoga stretches, but the more I practiced, my flexibility dramatically improved. Using yoga props such as a ball, blocks & straps are a great way to help stretch your muscles gradually. So make sure to use them every day and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!! Regularly practicing poses (like the #frontsplits) will be difficult and even painful at first.
