Book 19 of 20. 📖📚 I usually post these when I start reading them, but I’ve been busy and so I managed to finish it before posting. I’ve had this one in my TBR stack for a while as a recommendation by a favorite writer of mine. Part of at least a 3 book series. It’s good. A true thriller. Full of suspense. The lead is a complex character as a former foster youth who experienced abuse, trauma, substance abuse, and what it’s like to be a First Nation’s woman who once was disappeared. It’s inevitable but I was recently informed by Arthur Cary, the director of the #documentary ‘The Last Survivors’, that Frank Bright, one of the last #Jewish #survivors of the #holocaust has sadly passed away. Arthur allowed me precious and privileged access to the contributors to develop a special stand alone series of #portraits to promote his remarkable film, which won the #Bafta for best documentary. The Minnow Films/BBC commission gave me the opportunity to experiment with visual strategies that might communicate a sense of these important witnesses fading from view and Frank allowed me to shoot him in partial silhouette in the living room of his home that represents for me the simple suburban comforts, the sheer beautiful ordinariness of life to someone having survived one of the worst traumas inflicted on humanity. Light on this shoot WAS the metaphor, the heavy shadows allude to the constant presence of darkness in contrast to the hope of the pure white light pouring through the net curtains. I imagined Frank and the other subjects always negotiating with light and darkness as we all do. In another image, Frank stands in his kitchen, again surrounded by the gentle disorder of everyday life with his wife Cynthia (sadly also passed) sitting nearby. Outside in the garden, beyond both myself and Frank’s awareness, a leaf fell between us and was only noticed later as having been caught on camera. RIP Frank #thelastsurvivors

AN ANTHOLOGY OF SINDHI SUFI POETRY, by Dr Charu Gidwani & Dr Michel Boivin, is a labour of love by Dr Charu Gidwani, who started working on it in 2009, a continuation of the work of her father, Dr Parso Gidwani. She travelled to different parts of India to meet and talk to all the Sufi murshids she could find as well as their disciples and satsang groups, for her research. And she started learning to read and write in Sindhi – when she was in her late thirties! – for this project. Tragically, Dr Charu met an untimely demise in 2013. The work was continued by the French Sufi scholar Dr Michel Boivin, and constantly supported by her brother, Rohitesh Gidwani, who has arranged for the book to be published, and is hosting the launch. Dr Parso Gidwani, as you may know, was the illustrious scholar who led the Sindhi Dictionary project at Deccan College, Pune. He is also the grass-roots researcher who first began to study the Sindhi-speaking tribals of Banni in Kachchh, bringing the old Sindhi traditions, music, and culture, to light. It was at a landmark international conference that Dr Parso organized in Kachchh in 2004 that he met Dr Michel Boivin. He and Michel @duguet307 discussed many projects with great enthusiasm – but sadly, Dr Parso passed away just three weeks later. It was left to Charu to work on them, which she did with great commitment, and with Michel’s continuous encouragement that translation was the only way for the treasures of Sindhi to be accessible to a global readership. While some of the Sufi murshids in this collection were among the Hindus who fled Sindh when Partition took place, some of them are the Muslims – Sindhis of Sindh – who are their murids. The collection includes 6 Hindu and 5 Muslim Sufis, of whom 3 are women. At the launch of this much-awaited book, a Sufi singer will also perform. DAY OF REFLECTION AND HOPE… That’s what recently took place thanks to the efforts of the health centre team in the Gambler First Nation. The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) was proud to support their initiative by sponsoring a day devoted to all community members from Gambler. Along with presentations on the harms caused by colonial systems, there were opportunities for joy and laughter with activities for children, and a community feast to finish the day. Every day, our Nations deal with the impacts of residential and day schools, the national emergency of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender-diverse peoples (MMIWG2S+), the Sixties Scoop, and the child welfare system. Today we honour the people of Gambler for coming together in a spirit of solidarity and we thank them for letting us walk with them in their Nation’s healing journey. Greeting, my name is Jaya from Indonesia. In summary, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer by a doctor in December 2023, just before Christmas, due to a wound and bleeding on her right breast. After preparing for a medical checkup, she underwent breast removal surgery on December 27th. My mother experienced pain in her right chest (surgical scar) and difficulty moving her hands after the procedure, she didn't poo for about 3 weeks (difficult to defecate), hemorrhoids, and her nerves in her waist are pinched, so she feels pain when she walks. I think this is a difficult point in my life. My mother and I went to the doctor at the end of April for routine check-up, and the doctor told us we needed to start treatment and get a PET scan. I'm confused now because all of the fees are too expensive. With deepest humility, I would like to request your assistance in paying for my mother's breast cancer treatment. The funds will be used to purchase healthy food, fruits, vitamins, and prescriptions, as well as to cover doctor visits, PET scans, and operating expenditures.
