I was raised in fundamentalist evangelical christianity. I was also homeschooled k-12 with a faith-based curriculum {anyone here familiar with Abeka or Christian Liberty Academy? 🙋🏻♀️}. Indoctrination at any age is emotionally, psychologically, and even physically harmful. 🧠 👶🏻 But when indoctrination is interwoven with brain development, the negative effects are often wildly compounded. For myself, my attachment style was negatively impacted, and for many years, I was extremely codependent. Even now I struggle with this sense of constant striving, never feeling like my progress with anything is quite enough. Emotions were definitely a challenge in my teens and early twenties, but training as a therapist helped me develop the “feelings vocabulary” that was lacking from my developmental years. 💡 But enough about me… I’m curious what your experience has been like? MARSHALL APPLEWHITE 17 May 1931 - 26 March 1997 HEAVEN’S GATE Marshall Applewhite was the cult leader of the American group Heaven’s Gate, an organization based in San Diego, California. Applewhite created the cult in 1974 with Bonnie Nettles. Applegate was a child of a minister, which inspired his fascination with Bible prophecy. He was fired from the university after having an affair with one of his male students and then married Nettles, whom he met whilst in a psychiatric hospital. They advertised their beliefs to those who were interested in prophecies and aliens. All members had to give up their earthly possessions, their friends and family, jobs, and all their money. Everything in the cult had to be shared, and male members could undergo castration. In 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 of his followers in a rented mansion in San Diego. The group participated in a mass suicide on his order after he told them that an alien aircraft was following a comet that would pick them up on the way and restore them to life. I’m 2 weeks late but hey better late than ever! April was both an incredible month reading-wise and a really tough one for me personally. In chronological order: 📙 Cultish: this was so interesting!!! I had read a book about white supremacist cults before so I was vaguely familiar with some details this was a fascinating read. It read like a very personal thesis and having just handed mine it, it felt familiar. I underlined half the book. No regrets ✌️ 🎬 I Feel Bad About My Neck: I was extremely skeptics and bored at the beginning but this book grew on me and I have a lot of thoughts about it. (Keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth review 👀👀) 🐎 Bringing Down The Duke: the more I think about this book the more I am disappointed. I had fun reading it but overall, it was inconsequential. I did not feel connected to the characters and it had too much of a contemporary feel to it… I think eventually I rounded it up to 3 stars. I liked it but not as much as I would have loved to 🪄 The Age of Magical Overthinking: it was a nice read, I enjoyed it but it did not blow my mind. It was more autobiographical but still interesting 🤪 Trust The Plan: this was FASCINATING! I knew a fare share of Q-Anon but I was still surprised by the contents of this book. It’s batshit crazy that Q-Anon has followers.
