Contemporary Classics 📚 When I was in Waterstones recently, this table of 20th century classics caught my eye. I’ve actually only read four of them - Rebecca, Franny and Zooey, Heartburn and The Beach (I love that special anniversary edition!) What books do you think are contemporary classics?
For a recent commissioned art piece, I was looking into some establishments in the neighborhood that are no longer in operation. One of them was Café Lalo, where Tom Hanks (NY152) decides to annoy Meg Ryan (ShopGirl) as she waits with her copy of Pride and Prejudice and a red rose for her mysterious AOL blind date in "You've Got Mail". With an extensive menu and cute ambience, the café has long been a favorite among locals and visitors. Since the pandemic, however, it has been closed "for renovations". The restaurant was sued by its landlord in 2022 for back rent and water damage, to which it countersued by arguing that it does not owe the landlord rent until the restaurant reopens. While I don't know enough about the details to decide who is right or wrong in the court case, wouldn't it be a shame to have the restaurant evicted from its West 83rd Street location since 1988? I'd like to try that tiramisu that's supposed to be very good. Unlike some of the other places I researched, at least Café Lalo is still standing. The planters and lights are gone, but the signage is still there, and the bar and tables are still visible from the street. 🛍️I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK: AND OTHER THOUGHTS ON BEING A WOMAN BY NORA EPHRON📝 I'm conflicted with this book honestly. I liked a lot of it and some parts were...questionable. Nora Ephron is funny, witty, and talented, no doubt about it. But homegirl really needed help but refused to get it. But she constantly poked fun at therapy and any kind of mental health disorder, which rubbed me the wrong way. I get it though, it's the generation she grew up in, but it still is strange. Other than that, I did like this essay collection quite a bit. I don't relate to a lot of it as I am literally 21 not 65, but I loved "On Rapture," "What I Wish I'd Known," and "Considering the Alternative." All were funny and heartfelt. Overall, I liked it a lot and recommend to anyone feeling lost, adrift, or in need of a good laugh. SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BOOK: "Bob looks at me, 'Nora,' he says, 'we can't do everything.' My brain clears in an amazing way. Nora. We can't do everything. I have been given the secret of life. Although it's probably a little late." "...the state of rapture I experience when I read a wonderful book is one of the main reasons I read, but it doesn't happen every time or even every other time, and when it does happen, I'm truly beside myself." "There's something called the rapture of the deep, and it refers to what happens when a deep-sea diver spends too much time at the bottom of the ocean and can't tell which way is up. When he surfaces, he's liable to have a condition called the bends, where the body can't adapt to the oxygen levels in the atmosphere. All this happens to me when I surface from a great book." "Never marry a man you wouldn't want to be divorced from." "You can order more than one dessert." "There's no point in making pie crust from scratch." "I have her white cashmere shawl. I wore it for days after her death; I wrapped myself up in it; I even slept in it. But now I can't bear to wear it because it feels as if that's all there is left of Judy. I want to talk to her. I want to have lunch with her. I want her to give me a book she just read and loved. She is my phantom limb, and I can't believe I'm here without her."

It is hard to say goodbye.

Hello from Armenia! Where I’ve left a copy of I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron in front of the @opera_and_ballet_theatre_. I have mixed feelings about Ephon’s work. These collected pieces are funny and quick, but I can’t shake the feeling that they all follow the pattern of let’s pick one random thing and then torture the hell out of it to make an amusing story. Complaining about handbags? Skincare? You’re massive rent controlled appartment? All can be dragged out to 5000 words. They’re always presented as a universal world view, when really they’re through the shades of a hugely privileged woman living in New York. What also puts me off her is the glowing reviews from the women of the ‘you can’t sit with us’ crowd on this edition. A particular cabal of female British celebrities of various forms I get the ick from. Siempre me ha gustado leer, pero después de un paréntesis, más largo de lo que me hubiese gustado, he vuelto a conectar con el placer de la lectura. He elegido a Nora Ephron porque gracias a ella, volví a reír con un libro. Su estilo es muy especial y personal. Tan pronto habla de su preocupación por encontrar un buen bolso donde llevar todo, como lees algo que te hace reflexionar. A mi tampoco me gusta mi cuello. Y suelo mezclar unos temas con otros. Y leer cada página es un verdadero placer. Es un libro corto, de ágil lectura. Una mañana de lluvia, un domingo cualquiera, un momento de bloqueo, puede volverse divertido con este libro. El primer capítulo, que da nombre a su libro, es el que más me gustó. También me fascinaron “odio a mi bolso” y “cosas que me gustaría haber sabido”. Es una de mis autoras preferidas. Sorpresa! (para absolutamente nadie) me leí otro libro de Nora Ephron y fue el último que escribió. Dos años antes de irse de este mundo. 🌍 Su forma de escribir me sigue pareciendo atrapante, enérgica pese a transmitir específicamente en este libro su aceptación de la vejez y lo que viene con ella, y maravillosa. En este libro “No me acuerdo de nada” vemos una despedida de una mujer que vivió mucho. Una mujer a quién el tiempo le alcanzó, le empezó a borrar recuerdos y a distorsionar otros, que siempre disfrutó cocinar y comer, que pasó como todos por muchos fracasos que le enseñaron a valorar los logros, que estuvo a nada de ser una rica heredera en una ocasión y que si bien no lo fue, tuvo éxitos. También algunos descontentos y obsesiones, discusiones con el correo electrónico y la tecnología y se sintió halagada cuando le pusieron su nombre a un pastel de carne aunque luego se arrepintió cuando fue volviéndose defectuoso. Me encantan las anécdotas de Nora, algunos de sus problemas son tan neoyorquinos y otros tan atemporales que cualquier persona de todo el mundo podría entenderla. Soy una persona joven, tengo muchos errores por cometer y muchas historias que crear pero me ha gustado mucho este libro porque me fascinan los libros honestos escritos por mujeres que se han cansado de pensar como la sociedad quiere. Mis relatos favoritos fueron los 3 últimos, el de la heredera, el del fracaso y el de su mamá contándole cómo había corrido de la casa a una escritora que había dudado de su vida. Buen viaje, Nora Ephron. Te querré siempre. At the same time, he was a photographer for the “New York Post” and other New York City newspapers. To continue from the earlier post, Arty was a protégé of Arthur (Usher) Fellig (pseudonym “Weegee”), who was a photographer and photojournalist known for his black and white street photography of the city. Over the years, Arty partnered with cub reporters such as Pete Hamill, Nick Pileggi and Nora Ephron. According to people who knew him, Arty was not a typical media photographer. The fact that this woman has a ’neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb’ is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel is a cookery writer, and between trying to win Mark back and wishing him dead, she offers us some of her favourite recipes. Heartburn is a roller coaster of love, betrayal, loss and most satisfyingly revenge.
