2024 Book 32 - The Bee Sting by Paul Murray ⭐⭐ I hated this story - it was very literary and had some interesting allegorical references to climate change but I disliked the characters and found I had almost no connection with any of them. Add to that the absolutely dire plot - not a speck of hope in sight and it was not a pleasant experience to read. Finally, I found I could not deal with the very deliberate lack of punctuation. Even though it has wide critical acclaim, it was not the book for me. . . . . #thebeesting #bookreview #literaryfiction

June is #NationalPollinatorsMonth 🐝 ... ...in the US, not in my part of the world, and that emoji might be a wasp, but bee day should be every day anyway. From my aspiring beekeeper's mind to yours, here are 5 fun facts that have absolutely nothing to do with the book, which was great too. 🐝 June is exciting and active for beekeepers. It’s swarm season for the colonies that made it through the winter and the first month for many beekeepers to do full inspections. 🐝 Crazy numbers time: bees have 5 eyes, 6 legs, can lay up to 2000 eggs per day, have been around for 30 million years, and an average beehive can hold 50 000 bees. Each bee makes about one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. 🐝 Social bees, such as honeybees and bumblebees, often live in hives or nests, above or below the ground, while most solitary bees nest in the ground. Did you even know there are solitary bees?? 🐝 If you find a bee which appears to be struggling, it may be that it is just resting. If you think the bee is struggling, the best thing to do is gently put it onto a bee-friendly flower. If there are no bee-friendly flowers around, mix 50/50 white sugar and water to give it a one-off energy boost. 🐝 Honeybees have a dance move called the ‘waggle dance’. It’s a clever way of communicating between themselves to tell their nestmates where to go to find the best source of food. The book is fascinating and describes Goulson's hunt for the world's most elusive bees from Poland to Patagonia. He also writes about the importance of conservation and the way bees have adapted to the 21st century, with hives in abandoned industrial estates and on the rooftops of buildings. Sherlock Holmes, anyone?

The F.Scott Fitzgeralds were an interesting literary couple. Their lifestyle defined the Jazz Age of the 1920s. Idle, indulgent and crazy. They partied night and day to forget the horrors of The Great War. Fitzgerald’s first book this Side of Paradise was a great success so they lived it up. But his next three books fell flat and money troubles set in. Zelda had mental problems and Francis( that is what the F. stands for) had drink problems. He bacame despondent when even his third novel The Great Gatsby had a poor response. He had high hopes for this his literary masterpiece. Frances and Zelda died young and poor in their forties before his books became popular. Now, The Great Gatsby is viewed as one of the great American novels. It is one of my favourite books. The writing style is full of symbolism and beautiful imagery. Readability: 3/5 Finished: 17/05/2024 Yearly reading challenge: 26/60 Published: 2019 Pages: 400 Thoughts: This was my March pick from @thewildbookbox and although I have never heard of this book before, the themes appealed to me- a touch of dystopia, a female main character who is a loner… what can I say, I like what I like! • I struggled a bit with this one. It took me a long time to get into. Also, there was a lot of vagueness in the book, I felt like I was trying to see in a fog. Maybe that’s what the author was going for; but I like a book where I know for certain what is going on. I could figure out that there was sort of an ocean rising/climate change thing happening, as well as a possibly related refugee crisis with origins in racism, but I think the authors point about how these very real risks to our way of life are coming would’ve been stronger if there were more details. • One thing I was very disappointed with was the setting, especially when I found out that the author is Australian. Our country is the most geographically isolated country in the world, surrounded by water, so this book, which involves rising water and a cross country trek would have been right at home being placed here, instead of the what I think might be the east coast of the US. • This book gets 3/5. The ambiguity made it really difficult for me to get into this book but the themes were interesting. I also related hard to the main character, someone who did not like people to the point where she lived alone on an island, which to be quite honest is my life goal. Haha. Introvert much??! #bookstagram #booksofig #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #readersofig #booklover #booknerd #bibliophile #bookrecommendations #bookreview #literaryfiction #modernliterature #readabel #readaustralian #thewildbookbox

Early Sobrieties by Michael Deagler (Out now, thank you @astrahousebooks @netgalley for the #gifted ARC) I am sober. I’m not as early in my sobriety as Dennis Monk, the main character in Michael Deagler’s Early Sobrieties, but I can definitely relate to many of the experiences Dennis encounters in his first year of sobriety. After his parents ask him and his brother to move out the novel follows Dennis as he moves from couch to couch in Philadelphia, making sobriety his sole focus. The structure of the book feels a bit like short stories; they are firmly connected through Dennis and a few recurring characters, but each chapter places Dennis in different situations and settings as he inches closer to the one year sober mark. Normally I might be put off by this style but it brilliantly fed into the unmoored feeling of being newly sober. The feeling of separating yourself from the thing you have centered your life around (in this case alcohol) is so well represented by Monk’s movement from place to place, never settling anywhere, just drifting around trying to find somewhere to anchor. At the same time, it creates a sense that a steady anchor isn’t necessary because really all that matters is the present. I sometimes talk about books that have the ability to evoke not only thoughts but feelings and this one does both. Undoubtedly some of the feeling for me comes from a personal connection to the story, but I’m sure some of it is more universal. The depths of emotion Deagler pens faithfully depict the highs and lows of life, which is the gift many get when they decide to stop using their substance of choice and feel their feelings. It’s definitely been that way for me. I appreciate that this depicts a journey to sobriety outside of the 12 steps which is often centered in recovery stories. It reinforces the fact that journeys to sobriety are as individual and different as the people taking them and regardless of the path there are still shared threads of common experience. It also depicts the reality that sober people still have to figure out how to exist in the world; just because a person changes doesn’t mean the environment they exist in has. (Continued)

There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura and translated by Polly Barton The narrator seeks a job will have zero stress, challenge or conflict. She leads us through a series of jobs that she abandons because of various apprehensions and desires to avoid conflict and self introspection. I found this amusing from time to time but overall dragged towards the end- just a little too long… it did absolutely live up to its name. Even the least challenging most solitary job is not so easy in the end… What is your favorite book in translation?

Hi book lovers!! 🫶🏻 How’s everyone doing?? It’s a long weekend over here in Canada and we are so excited!!!🤩 This post isn’t a review as I’ve been in such a slump and Syd’s been busy wedding planning (she’s getting married next month!!!!)🤍 In the mean time though, here’s a little peak at what my shelf has been looking like: 🩵 A book I’ve put down for now: Cleopatra and Frankenstein (but just LOOK at the cover, so gorgeous 🥹). I’ve heard it’s similar to Normal People which intrigued me, but the age gap kinda made me lose interest. Convince me to read it in the comments please!!!! 🩵 A book I’m currently reading: A Fire Endless. Despite not having the energy, I was determined to pick this one up and finish the duology. I just have to shout out Rebecca Ross for her enchanting writing and ability to grab my attention right away! 🩵 A book I’m excited for: This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune!!!!🫶🏻 I honestly would have devoured it by now but I’m trying to have some self control with buying more books when I have so many already sitting on my shelf😅 What’s your TBR shelf looking like lately? Tell us in the comments or let us know a book you’ve loved recently!! (And feel free to make me feel better about my slump🥲)👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 — Jess xx

𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘴 by Rachel Khong [ Thanks to @prhaudio for the complimentary audiobook, and @aaknopf @netgalley for the e-arc! #gifted ] The way I had no chill in anticipation of this book that I needed all 3 formats immediately. 😂 I started this one on audio and read in tandem with the ebook which I was glad to have to go back and reference, but of course I still needed a copy for my shelf. Real Americans asks, if you could shape your own destiny, would you? How far would you go? Split into three parts (and the audio with three narrators!) between Mei, a Chinese immigrant who fled Mao's Cultural Revolution in the 1960's, her daughter Lily who met and fell in love with someone despite their opposite backgrounds, and Lily's son Nick who passes as white but navigates being biracial in America, all the while questioning his own identity. Each part was so distinct, they felt like separate books until they started to come together. I loved how each of their experiences contrasted each other's in some ways, and ran parallel in others. It made me reflect on how much of our identity is tied to our DNA, how much to experience, and how much is left up to chance. And if you had the ability to edit your identity, where would you draw the line. I was really intrigued by the magical realism aspect, and wished there had been more details; though I liked that it still made sense to the story without oveshadowing the characters. I have yet to read Khong's debut novel Goodbye, Vitamin, but it is now solidly on my list. 🙌 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🗨 Do you read in multiple formats? What's your go-to?

A long overdue book review for a book I loved! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ out of 5 Publication Date: 2023 Genre(s): Literary Fiction, Contemporary Fiction Pages: 304 This book was wonderful, a complete delight—though somewhat heartbreaking—from beginning to end. The characters that are the focus of this book range in age from 9 to 90 and each have their own unique combination of beautifully illustrated gifts and faults—intelligence, shyness, prejudice, curiosity, impulsivity, kindness, creativity, indecisiveness, beauty and friendliness. Each character is so fully-realized and touching in their own way, though I will say that Ro Goodson, despite her many faults, will have a precious place in my heart for a long, long time. This book really reminded me that every part of your life matters—it doesn’t suddenly begin when you reach adulthood, and it doesn’t end with old age but only when it actually ends. There’s is no starting over—you cannot leave your past behind but you can accept all that it has done for you, and to you. And maybe your impact will last longer than you could possibly fathom. Wonderfully written. What a lovely surprise this book was! . . . #book #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #booknerd #bookaddict #bookworm #bookaesthetic #bibliophile #toread #readersofinstagram #readersofig #reader #readersgonnaread #readingisfundamental #readingisfun #readmorebooks #readmore #igreads #instabook #fiction #literature #LiteraryFiction #ContemporaryFiction

📘BOOK TOUR📘 PENANCE by Eliza Clark paperback pub date: 5/7/24 @bibliolifestyle @harperperennial #partner From the author of the cult hit Boy Parts comes a chilling, brilliantly told story of murder among a group of teenage girls—a powerful and disturbing novel as piercing in its portrait of young women as Emma Cline’s The Girls. “Eliza Clark’s writing embraces the socially unacceptable and wryly explores themes of gender, power, and violence.”— @grantabooks Best of Young British Novelists 2023 “Chilling, clever, and unputdownable.”— @guardian Synopsis: On a beach in a run-down seaside town on the Yorkshire coastline, sixteen-year-old Joan Wilson is set on fire by three other schoolgirls. Nearly a decade after the horrifying murder, journalist Alec Z. Carelli has written the definitive account of the crime, drawn from hours of interviews with witnesses and family members, painstaking historical research, and most notably, correspondence with the killers themselves. The result is a riveting snapshot of lives rocked by tragedy, and a town left in turmoil. But how much of the story is true? Compulsively readable, provocative, and disturbing, Penance is a cleverly nuanced, unflinching exploration of gender, class, and power that raises troubling questions about the media and our obsession with true crime while bringing to light the depraved side of human nature and our darkest proclivities. #penance #penancebook #elizaclark #bibliolifestyle #mystery #thriller #mysterythriller #literaryfiction #crime #paperback #paperbackrelease

short review for a surprising five-star read - All Fours by Miranda July! I say “surprising” because I am not in my mid-forties, married, or have a child so the only thing I could relate to when I first heard about this book was simply the sometimes overwhelming panic of what it means to live life to the fullest as a woman. But my oh my, what a powerful subject that is, my friends. this book was manic and EXTREMELY horny but really puts a great perspective on that walls-closing-in feeling of aging and autonomy in a way that both disturbs and comforts. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #read #reading #readmorebooks #fiction #contemporaryfiction #chicklit #mirandajuly #bibliophile #goodreads #bookreview #literaryfiction

summer reading time is here! before coming back home for the summer, i had the daunting task of choosing which books i wanted to read over these next 2-3 months, so here is my (very ambitious) list of summer reading books! most of these are books that i have been meaning and wanting to read (or reread - hello, the great gatsby) FOREVER, but the vibes of the book were too summery to read during the fall. i would say that my TOP 5 SUMMER TBR are: - to the lighthouse by virginia woolf - slow days, fast company by eve babitz - all the lovers in the night by mieko kawakami - convenience store woman by sayaka murata - book lovers by emily henry of course, i am probably going to buy new books and those are going to take over my reading plans … but i am very excited to jump into these essay collections and happy books. happy summer reading 🍉☀️⛱️📚🌸 _______________________________________ #bookstagram #book #booklover #booknerd #bookshop #bookaesthetic #bookhaul #literaryfiction #reading #summerreading #essaycollection

~ book review ~ Interesting Facts about Space by Emily Austin Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I felt like this book was written for me and for only me. Jokes aside, this book was so good and Emily Austin is an auto-read author for me now. Enid was a character that I found to be so relatable, and I liked how direct Austin wrote her. Everything about Enid is laid out for you, and that really worked for me. I loved her development and how she explored trauma-searching and coming to terms with parts of yourself that you demonize for a long time. I can definitely see myself re-reading this in the future. #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookstagram #queerbooks #lgbtqauthors #lgbtqbooks #literaryfiction #literary #books #bookish

Currently reading. . . . ✨ Thank you @aaknopf for my arc of Real Americans by Rachel Khong! There’s something about disappearing into someone else’s fictional life that will always pull me back to books. Maybe it’s just the pieces of myself I see in characters who are so different from me? I read The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri right before this, and I saw a lot of similarities in these books. Obviously, they go on very different journeys with very different characters, and yet, they are spiritually similar. Both span lots of time and space, but take place partially in NYC at the turn of the millennium. They are about immigrant parents learning to understand a new culture, and how the decisions they made in coming to the US change life for them and their children. They are about identity, belonging, loss, relationships, forgiveness, and all the mistakes we make. There’s a beauty in these universal themes, a reminder that we’re not so different. That there is beauty to find in the small things. That you never know what someone else has been through. The world is rough enough. Choose kindness, y’all.

BOOK REVIEW: The Secret History by Donna Tartt 🌻 4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 overall i absolutely ADORED this book. Donna Tartt’s writing and prose was absolutely beautiful and the way she told the story through the lens of Richard Papen was incredible. i didn’t really know what i was going into when i started it and i wish i had a little more understanding of the general concept of the book so i would’ve known what was coming better. still, i enjoyed it a lot anyways. and seeing Richard’s feelings towards his own friends shift from admiration to disgust (or pity) by the end of the story was such an interesting process and the way it was told was beautiful. minus half a star because there was a point of about 100 pages that i felt could’ve been done better or totally lect out because i got really bored and had to push myself through them. super glad i did because the last 100 or so pages was fantastic!! so overall, very good book, and i would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read it 🌞 have you read The Secret History before? what did you rate it?

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt This one is a book club darling. I even used this as one of my reading challenge prompts as a "Book Recommended by a Librarian" because @bocolibraries recommended it a while back. I really enjoyed this book it has some beautiful things to say about grief and family. The only thing that stopped this from being a 5 star book for me was 1 thing: I WANTED MORE MARCELLUS!!! Having some chapters be from the perspective of a giant Pacific octopus was super-original, and I loved the unique POV. But when it flipped to Tova or especially Cameron, it dragged a bit. I liked the book, but it was easy to put down and pick up other things. It wasn't until I had a couple of flights that I could devote some uninterrupted time that I finally finished it. I was really satisfied with the conclusion. 4.25/5 #RemarkablyBrightCreatures #ShelbyVanPelt #literaryfiction #animalPOV #cephalapod #readingprompts #travelread #BookRiotReadHarder2014 #BRRH24 #planereading #suitcasepic #nerdymamabooks #booknerd #DiverseBookstagrammersRead #debut #bookstagram

Pretty in Pink! I got tagged a lil while ago by @alicesliterarylife to do a pink book stack, and I had lots of fun picking out some perfectly pink books. 💕💖💗💞 Not tagging anyone but if you’ve spotted a few pink books on your shelf and fancy sharing them, consider this your sign to do so! (if you do pls tag me as I’d love to see!) The only one in this stack that I haven’t read yet is ‘Hotel World.’ I really liked Ali Smith’s ‘How to be Both’ so I’m eager to see if I enjoy her other work. (I also desperately wanna start the Seasons). Have you read any of these? Or any on your TBR? Any favourites? 🌸🌺🌷🎀🩷

The new novel from the Miles Franklin award-winning author of Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens. It was a beautiful evening. The wind gathered speed, lifting the frangipanis from the grove behind him, pink and yellow petals defying gravity. Beyond the trees, hidden by the foliage and rows of towering palm trees, the detention centre slept fitfully in the heavy summer heat. The palms blocked the ocean gust that now swirled around him, filling his lungs with the taste of temple flowers and salt. It reminded him of home. He took a deep breath, stepped off the escarpment and felt the red sand rush up towards him. Arriving in Australia seeking asylum, Fina dedicates herself to aiding the refugees who are held in Port Camden, a remote island outpost. Over time she settles into a life within a community of like-minded people, finding a new family, far from her original home. After she speaks out for those being detained, Fina becomes the focus of a media storm that leads to her arrest, and the threat of deportation. When a security officer dies under suspicious circumstances, Lucky, a special investigator, arrives to uncover the truth. The mystery is tied to Fina’s fate—and the secrets she reveals will divide the town and the nation. Safe Haven is about displacement and seeking refuge—but ultimately it is a story about finding home—and the lengths you’ll go to find safety and love.

🎧📚 AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Annie Bot by Sierra Greer, narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Look at you,” he says. “Are you afraid of me?” She takes half a step back. “Answer me,” he says. “Yes.” “Why? What do you think I’d do to you?” “I don’t know. Something bad.” “‘Something bad,’” he says, mimicking her. “Have I ever hit you? Would I ever?” She shakes her head. “No.” “No. Because we have the ideal relationship, don’t we?” “What do you want me to say?” “I want you to have an original thought in your head. I want you to stop me from being an asshole. Is that too much to ask?” 👉👌🤖💃🧠🚲 THOUGHTS: Oh my God Greer is so GOOD at writing realistically shitty men! Doug felt like so many dudes I've known... petulant, selfish, controlling, completely incapable of empathy unless it's to make him feel better about himself. Frick this book was so good but it made me so ANGRY! I loved Annie's character development and growth, the trajectory gave Poor Things vibes. The audiobook narrator did a great job giving Annie a voice. And the ending? *Chef's kiss* I was almost worried it was going to go in a different direction, but NOPE. Perfect, perfect, perfect. (Reminiscent of how I left my own abusive ex, actually!) I can't wait to see what else Sierra Greer will write! Pick up Annie Bot if you love: ~ character studies ~ great dialogue ~ litfic with light scifi elements ~ choosing the bear 👉👌🤖💃🧠🚲 SUMMARY: Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner, Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the cute outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard. She’s learning, too. Doug says he loves that Annie’s artificial intelligence makes her seem more like a real woman, but the more human Annie becomes, the less perfectly she behaves. As Annie's relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder whether Doug truly desires what he says he does. In such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

chaotic books for chaotic people!! aka my fav sub-genre (does that count as a sub-genre?) Really Good, Actually follows Maggie in the aftermath of her divorce from the only long term partner she’s had. Suddenly, at the age of 28, Maggie must for the first time learn to live alone, and relearn who she is without being a part of a “we”. She doesn’t even prefer the left side of the bed! Why did she not think to change her grocery list when some of the foods aren’t even ones she likes?! Following a woman relearn who she is and be forced to confront the reality that her life has not followed the trajectory she had planned is such a treat. It is painful and it is difficult, but to see someone truly come into their own and to do so with humor and the support of her community is wonderful. It’s not an all time favorite, but I definitely enjoyed this one and will for sure be reading whatever Monica Heisey writes next!

"My friends call me Broadway." It's First Line Friday and this is the opening line to my dark academia novel. It's inspired by the unique circumstances under which Mary Shelley came up with her novel Frankenstein. It was during a cold, dark volcanic winter that Shelley, her husband-to-be, and two friends sat up telling scary stories. They made a bet of who could write the best spooky tale of their own and Frankenstein was one of the only tales to ever see the light of day. In my novel, four undergrads set up their own writing retreat to work on their trunk stories. The house they've rented is potentially haunted and a nor'easter is rolling in. The perfect atmosphere in which to write a ghost story, but less idea for keeping a solid grip on one's sanity. #horrorbooks #amwriting #darkacademia #horrorauthor #literaryfiction #firstlinefriday

Things are beginning to warmup, here on the Fundy coast. Finally! My plan, now, is to have Lucy Maud's oil and filter changed, then back on the road by the twenty-fifth. That's the plan. Which is always subject to change, of course, depending on the mood swings of a fickle pantheon of killjoys -- aka weather gods. Meanwhile, I have the precarious Split Rock Trail to explore, and an Amor Towles novel to remind of why I love to read literary fiction. 'The one thing for certain at Belmont [horse racetrack] was that on Wednesday at 5:00 A.M. there was no place for the common man. This was like the circles of Dante's inferno -- populated with men of varied sins, but also with the shrewdness and devotion of the damned.' -- Amor Towles (Rules of Civility) #writerslife #poetslife #readerslife #booknerd #trailwalker #literatureontherun #splitrocktrail #fundycoast #bayoffundy #walker #springday #literaturejunkie #literature #booklover #amortowles #rulesofcivility #teaandabook #weathergods #bikerslife #literaryfiction

Do you ever just want to read every single book that has ever existed, which then makes it hard to focus on the ones you're reading? The first photo is almost all the books that currently have bookmarks in them (I may be missing one or two). I haven't made it very far in any of them, but I'm enjoying them all (except maybe Middlemarch which may get the boot soon 😬). Mood Swings comes out next week and so far it's as absurd as the cover suggests. I'm slowly going through The Rings of Saturn, it's definitely a vibe. Blue Lard is just Blue Lard. I don't think there's anything else like it. The second photo is my unhinged pile of most books I want to start RIGHT NOW. Which do you think I should start next? Of course there are other books on my shelves I want to start immediately, so we'll see how I do. It's supposed to be rainy all day tomorrow so maybe I can make some progress. And Sunday? Who knows?! I may just put together a completely different stack.

“We pour a bit of ourselves into everything we do, every note we play, I thought, and unwittingly, one fragment at a time, we leave ourselves in the past.” . An Yu examines what it really means to experience loss in Ghost Music. the prose is almost sinister in its simplicity, both musical and mischievous in equal measure. the piano becomes a character in and of itself, with the pieces played exposing elements of each character otherwise hidden beneath the keys. the lingering questions have been dancing around my brain since the final page - what does it mean to lose something, and when it’s gone, where does it go?

An atmospheric and engaging read, I loved #rivereastriverwest by #aubereylescure!! This follows a dual perspective of a daughter and stepfather in Shanghai. Alva must navigate having a white mother, her mixed race identity, and wearing the rose colored glasses of the idea of America. This was really different! Really sad. I stayed up very late finishing it last night it was such a treat!! #currentlyreading #bookstagram #2024reads #literaryfiction

🤗 #comofocoemti #jessicajoyce #youwithaview

🐇BOOK REVIEW🐇 Feast, by Emily O’Grady ⭐️3.7/5 - another @thestellaprize shortlist, & another thanks to @the_bookshop_darwin! Neve, upon finishing high school, flies from Australia to Scotland to stay with her father and his girlfriend, Alison. But Neve and Alison both have their secrets, and Neve’s mother, Shannon is on her way - ready to make it a trifecta at Neve’s 18th birthday feast. Feast is set in the alternating minds of the three women, building tension and potential slowly and steadily, maintaining pace throughout the novel. While I didn’t find the writing style particularly moving or expressive, the straightforward prose and granular detail gave it a sociopathic edge, complementing some of the thoughts and compulsions of the women. It felt that each of these women were yearning for both connection and distance, for closure and to sweep their stories under the rug. In their self-consumed paradoxes, it feels like their stories are siloed despite being in the same physical space. This is another book that I respected, but it’s not for everyone. In particular I was struck by the struggle to close power imbalances in whatever arbitrary way was meaningful to each woman. While it’s difficult to *like* such cruel and dissociated characters, you can’t deny they make very interesting women. 🖌️”She wants to be propped up beside the bathroom sink, her mother brushing her teeth, the taste of bubble gum and iron as she spits foam. Debbie combing her hair for lice eggs, doling out worm tablets, pulling splinters from her palm. (The light is making her delirious now; she can feel fingernails scratching the surface of her brain, a fiery ball of coal nestled in its centre.) Further still, to before speech, before sight and touch, to before she had a mind, before she had a body. Back to when she was just a cluster of cells, a possibility, and there was no one burrowed under her skin like a tick, sucking away, sucking away.” 🖌️”A little while longer to sit with her body, which is now as light as dust, bound to no one. She feels a deep pit opening up, which she knows she will descend into if she doesn’t block what is happening and get on with things.”

𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲 by Mona Awad🐰 Obsessed with this and it is 100% worth the hype!! I genuinely felt like I fell down Alice’s rabbit hole and into a world created by Heathers/Grady Hendrix/Mean Girls/Midsommar all in one!! Bunny is so good that it’s left me with a book hangover 🤕 What’s it even about? Well… “Bunny” by Mona Awad is a darkly humorous and surreal novel that follows the life of Samantha Heather Mackey, a loner outsider in an elite MFA program. She finds herself drawn into the bizarre world of her privileged, cliquey classmates known as the “Bunnies.” As Sam becomes entangled in their strange rituals and increasingly surreal events, she must confront her own desires and fears. The book explores themes of identity, friendship, and the pressures of conformity in a satirical and unsettling way, making it a compelling read for anyone who enjoy dark humour and genre-bending storytelling. Please drop suggestions in the comments of books that are like this - I beg!💘🎀 #bunny #monaawad #weirdgirlfiction
