If only our imaginations could dictate our realities! It’s so easy to get caught up in fantasy; and that’s not a good thing. We know that. But sometimes, even things that once felt realistic have a way of later on becoming the fantastic—fantastic dreams, fantastic schemes, fantastic things that can no longer be. They become unattainable, unreachable; and the once potential turns into a dream that has died. It hurts our soul and our bones. It takes years to fully move on and let go. Even as I write this, I still haven’t fully done so. What I have come to accept that even letting go, in and of itself, is a process and a practise—something to do bit by bit, step by step, little by little everyday. Then we start to reach for something else; and that is a beautiful thing as well. Love Stories of an Immigrant 1. Rebirth As I drive away from the place I knew as home, Leaving everything behind in search of something unknown. I fight an intense battle with the woman I used to be, My quiet screams known just to me. As I drive through the city I always loved, Memories rush past me in a blur. The café where I hugged my friends goodbye, The streets I grew up in seem to be flying by. It’s an odd feeling when you’re leaving home, Adrenaline seems to make its place in every bone. And yet, there’s a fear that can not be explained, Am I right, signing up for all this pain? I reach the airport, carrying my life on my shoulders, I hug my family goodbye. When did I swallow these boulders? I drag my luggage through the open door, These burdens will now forever be mine to store. This new city is as beautiful as can be, Yet I miss my home and the sea. As I strive to conquer my dreams, Part of me is slipping out of the seams. There is now a new resident in this house of flesh and bone, One who can smile through tears on the phone. Hello, this is @aniaready, taking over the #fastforward @womeninphoto this week. I’m a Polish-British photographic artist based in the UK. I work with images, texts and archives. I’m showcasing artists who took part in the collaborative project ‘We Also Fight Windmills’ which was inspired by the life and works of a feminist, largely forgotten writer, Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska (1872-1925). Today I’d like to share a drawing by Mich Maroney @michmaroney who is an artist and writer based in Skibbereen in Ireland. This piece is entitled ‘From under the apple trees he wrote to me’. Mich explains: ‘The drawing is made using a piece of text – from “From under the apple trees he wrote to me” – in response to Ania Ready’s image of a woman standing alone in the dark under trees [that image is on the book cover of ‘I Also Fight Windmills]. The text was inspired by [Sophie’s partner] Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s] diary from World War 1. There is a poignant entry written in France whilst he was at rest under apple trees in an orchard. He writes how happy he is. He was killed soon after, leaving Sophie bereft. Though the words are not Sophie’s I wanted the drawing to reflect the slightly obsessional way that she writes.’ 'From under the apple trees he wrote to me' (Pen and ink on paper - BFK Rives newsprint 300 gsm, 2024, signed) This drawing became the poster image of the 'We Also Fight Windmills' exhibition. It beautifully combined the textual with the visual, something that was very core to the project. *** Mich Maroney @michmaroney is an Eurasian/British artist and writer who lives and works in Skibbereen, Ireland. If you want to learn something and you learn from a book you will need experience to put what you learned in practice and you make mistakes until you know to do well what you learned from the book. But if you are learning from a person who is very experienced and wise, then you can learn a lot of things from that person, that person will do like reverse engineering with you and show you the mistakes he/she did so you can avoid them, it shows you practical tips which you cannot find in books, and it shows you how to use emotional intelligence so you can grow fast in what you learned and practice. Books are basically the best source of theoretical knowledge. However, books don't provide pragmatic knowledge, experience, tips and tricks to advance faster. it's been quite some time now since our paths became two from one, the day when you decided to leave my hand is in the past now and practically i should've moved on by now, but that never happened. i don't know what part of you or your love still resides in there, but something is there that doesn't let me sleep peacefully at nights or maybe gives me hope of getting you back. i guess i'm still waiting for you. that hope never allows me to get along with life since it's becoming more painful with each passing day and when it hurts, i start hating you for turning me into such a hopeless person. i even hate myself sometimes for giving you everything that you never deserved.
