Introducing both myself and my soon-to-be Substack, Remembrance of Things Present (yes, a nod to Proust, because: everyone else on Substack had a title, it was the first thing I thought of, and I can’t help myself). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿: In general I just love learning. I love to learn about people and the world and how everything is interconnected. I have a masters in psychology, so I tend to view things through that lens. I’m highly internally motivated; leave me alone with my thoughts and I can build or discover worlds. I’ve been told I’m a dynamic thinker and a good teacher, and I do get a thrill from sharing what I learn and why it’s important with others who are excited to listen. I have many interests and pursuits: writing, art, learning ballet, playing violin, architecture, various niche theologies. I love going to museums and other cultural experiences like the symphony or walking tours. I spent many years studying permaculture and recently designed and installed a permaculture landscape in my yard. I share all this to let you know the sieve through which my writing falls. Consider it your informed consent for reading Remembrance of Things Present. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Most of my work will be reflective memoir, which will inevitably include some psychological combing (I was a therapist; it won’t leave me) and gesturing vaguely at the zeitgeist. **LONG POST INCOMING** My grandfather passed away when I was very small, before I really knew him as a person. I remember my family lining up once a year to pay respects at his grave, and as the youngest member, I always went last. I would watch all my relatives whisper Taiwanese prayers I didn't understand and helplessly tell my mom that I didn't know what to say. She would say, "Just tell him you hope he's happy in that place beyond the sky," and I would mumble ad verbatim at his grave, not really understanding the weight of what I was saying. My flash fiction piece, "That Place Beyond the Sky," is about the things we lose before we realize we've lost them, and today, I was thrilled to discover that it placed second in @wow_womenonwriting's Winter 2024 Flash Fiction competition. It is my first-ever submission for a writing competition, and it's something I wrote in a flurry and submitted before I could chicken out and change my mind. I'm so honored to know it was well-received. I've written for many years now, but always under a penname, partially because I like the idea of having a secret double life and partially because I'm terrified of having something as deeply personal as creative writing attached to me.
