May Writing Day 18! No progress yesterday—but that was mostly because I was reading, rather than writing. As reading is considered an essential part of writing, I'm not going to be hard on myself for that! As well as listening to the audiobook of "Mistborn: The Final Empire" by Brandon Sanderson (part of my big re-read of everything in anticipation of the release of "Wind and Truth" later this year), I recently got Erik Larson's latest book, "The Demon of Unrest". It's about the months between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the shelling of Fort Sumter. Magnolias at moonrise, closing around their spent-match stamen. I read about how they open in the mornings and draw back at night, so I’ve been watching the ones by my house. They’re my favorite flower and I’m glad they can thrive on the beach like this. This might not seem like a writing/planner/etc. post, but lately these nature walks and trying different teas have been part of my process. ✨️Back in Action✨️✒️↩️ Hey friends! I'm back after a brief break, and I'm keeping it real with you - being a writer and a teacher can be tough! This week, I've been focusing on my students and the provincial exams and field tests, so that is why I've been absent on my page. The reality is that some seasons of life get crazy busy, and writing takes a backseat. But here's the thing: I don't see it as a discouragement. I see it as a chance to show myself that I can do what I love, even with a full-time career. It's about balancing the two and being honest with my schedule and prioritizing commitments related to teaching. There will be days I can't do both. For now, that's my life! 😊 If you're a fellow writer and teacher, or just someone with a full-time job or other major commitments, know that there's hope! These are my 2 best pieces of advice: 1. View your schedule in advance so you can see an overview of what's to come to best help you balance your work and passions. It's not impossible if we plan and put things in place so we can still enjoy our writing journey. 2. Be honest with yourself because you are not Superman. Or Wonder Woman. As much as we convince ourselves that we can do it all, we know the truth. It's good to do what is best in the moment and not just what we want to do. It saves us from burnout and disappointment down the road. So, don't give up on your dreams, even when life gets in the way or is too busy. Keep pushing forward, and remember why you started in the first place. One of the main themes I talk about is owning your space and letting your light shine. I wholeheartedly believe that there’s only one YOU, and your gifts, message and story need to be shared. And I get how nerve wracking that can be. Since I started my business in August 2014, I’ve hosted over a hundred book signings and had booths at dozens of huge holiday markets (and pet expos) for my own books. I’ve also helped authors, creatives, and other introverts move to their next level whether it was through coaching, developmental editing, refining key note speeches, instructing through courses and workshops, or having them on The TufFish Show. When I work with someone, I want a deep transformation for them. Where they can see how far they’ve come and feel the results they wanted to achieve.
