I’ve read a lot of food writing but nothing has made me as hungry as this. Early on Yuzuki describes a bowl of rice with butter and just a drop of soy sauce and it sounds like ecstasy. I was sorely tempted to get out of bed and make myself a bowl immediately. I refrained, but I have since developed a butter habit that my bank balance does not approve of. “This was all it took, she thought, to experience a sense of satisfaction of a kind she’d not had before. To make something yourself that you wanted to eat and eat it the way you wanted — was that the very essence of gratification? Until not long ago, she’d had no idea what it was that she wanted to eat, but since she’d begun using her kitchen, she was becoming able to picture, albeit vaguely, the objects of her desires.” This book was an odd kind of comfort to me because, at the time of reading, I’d been cooking only for myself while my partner was working away from home for a time. I knew that food and eating would be one of the bigger challenges for me while he was away and I was proven right. This book, which focuses so acutely on one woman’s appetite, was a reminder that I should think as much about myself as I do others when it comes to food. So I dug out Nigella’s Cook Eat Repeat (written when she was largely on her own during COVID lockdowns) and set about restoring my own appetites. Sure this book has a crime thriller plot, but at its heart, it’s about self-discovery, identity and found family. ENG-NL --- *Review copy* Let's see which tropes are collected here: fake dating, enemies to lovers and he falls first. At first glance, this book has everything to make a successful romcom. Good even, with the added element of a Spanish main character. There is enough about the story that works: relatively enough build-up for the two characters, it reads quite smoothly in certain parts and the atmosphere for a summer love story is there. Yet, the basic elements are somewhat unstable. Personally, I think the story is described in too much detail. That makes the story long-winded; some pages could've easily been pruned. Besides, after admiring Aaron a few times I had had enough. (The buff men in similar fiction are starting to annoy me.) It also takes a while before we can set foot on Spanish soil. A shame with a title like this one. All in all, I enjoyed reading this book. If you are looking for something to dream away on a beach, then feel free to take this book with you. ✨Book Review ✨ Adding to my dragon obsession is When the Moon Hatched by @sarah.a.parker.author with an absolutely stunning book. The world building is absolutely amazing, the characters so well built and the plot is off right from the start. It really ensnared me. Do not be discouraged by the glossary in the beginning! I heard about it and it did make me hesitate at first but it is such a unique and rich world that it helped and really captured my attention to learn of it before diving in. It is quick to read through, and then the book itself while long did not feel quite so long at all when reading! For a unique take on fantasy and a world of dragons, of fae and magical creatures as well as a heartbreaking romance that makes you eager for the next book, then this one is definitely one I’d recommend. Book 43 of 2024: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah I’ve heard great reviews of this audiobook and it’s been on my TBR for years. It did not disappoint. Listening to Trevor Noah tell his story is definitely the way to go on this one if you have the option. As someone who believes everyone has a story to tell, I’m almost always a fan of memoirs if they’re well-written (or told) and shared in a meaningful way. Noah definitely has a story, having grown up in South Africa during apartheid. And he’s a stellar storyteller and communicator as a tv personality and comedian. His book is funny but it also contains important messages regarding race, culture, and language. I feel like his story is pretty unique; it’s definitely not like any other I’ve heard before. He has some pretty wild stories about his childhood, teenage, and young adult experiences! I think what I enjoyed the most were his undying love and respect for his mother, whose strength and character were unwavering. ✨Happy release day!!✨ 4 ⭐️! This was such a cute and cozy contemporary romance. It felt like getting a warm hug ☺️ Spunes made me feel like it was the west coast version of Stars Hollow and I want to visit this fictional place. I really enjoyed the characters. Sage and Fisher both had complicated pasts and despite that they were able to open up to each and be that person they would be able to lean on. I loved how Sage was unapologetically herself and Fisher was always trying to do right by his niece (Indy) even if he felt like he was screwing it up. Did I mention he’s a chef?! Because that’s hot! Oh and he has his ears pierced, double hot 🥵 I do feel like the last few chapters were a bit rushed but they made me tear up nonetheless. This was my first book by Tarah Dewitt and I’m happy to say I will continue to read her stories! THIS. This is the type of book you don't want to end, the novel that makes you feel warm and fuzzy, the sort that makes your heart melt. This is a story you can't put down, you read in less than 24 hours, and reads like how a comfort food tastes. The Do-Over tells the story of junior high school student Emelie trying to get out of a cycle of reliving the same day–Valentine’s Day, of all options–and change the horrible events that keep recurring, whether it’s her car crashing, her not getting an honor scholarship after all, or her family announcing they’re moving without her. And the book was just plain fun. I could relate to the main character (well, minus her bizarre choices on the DONC–if you’ve read the novel, you know what I mean 😉). I liked Lynn Painter’s take on the ever-repeating-day concept. And on a deeper level, it made me think about how I want to carry out my day. Like all books, it wasn’t perfect. Although not as much as in Better Than the Movies, there was cussing. Characters would joke about dangerous injuries or lightheartedly insult each other. The main message was that you should live for yourself. But what can I say? Although I disliked some parts, they were trivial to how the overall story worked out. My heart was singing at the end, and once I finished it, I wished there was more and bought my own copy. (I was reading one from the library.) This is the sort of happy, cozy book I’ve been hoping for. Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle I have very mixed feelings about this book. I didn’t love it, and I didn’t hate it. The premise of it seems light and fluffy, and it is just that…for the first 50 percent or so before it takes a dramatic turn to be more serious. I liked how quickly the story moved along, but it was almost to a detriment because this is only a 272 page book. I would have enjoyed another 60-80 pages or so to either get more back story of previous relationships Daphne had before the present time or to develop more of her relationships in the present. This was enjoyable enough, but it won’t be a memorable read for me. Synopsis: Being single is like playing the lottery. There’s always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all. Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. I lean towards the psychological, but this wild ride is full of action, suspense, and a little bit of romance sprinkled in. Alex is a big-time thief. He pulls off high-end robberies. Just when he’s ready to have a mellower life he gets pulled into one last job in Spain. Previously in the States, he meets Diane at a party where they both go to literally trip, hallucinate to escape, and self-realize. Alex and smart-ass Diane are strangers until they realize that they met in the past and that they share a complicated connection. They start a relationship that goes awry when both of their adult children are kidnapped and Alex must complete an impossible job to get them back. This should be required reading. The graphic novel version is every bit as excellent as the original, and I cannot recommend it enough. I’m so glad I began reading the first in this series, as it provides lots of information and introduction to a slew of characters. I love the cover illustration for #aladysguidetoetiquetteandmurder ! So creative and eye-catching with the amusing drawing and beautiful lilac color. 💜 If you are looking for a great read that introduces you to some entertaining characters as you rollick along with some amateur sleuthing, this is the book for you. There were so many lines I enjoyed. It was difficult to choose just one for my opening quote. I found the tone of this story lighthearted and entertaining. Frances, the widowed Countess of Harleigh at twenty-seven, is a bit naïve. She is beginning to take control of her own life after her mother, husband and husband’s family have been making the decisions. Moving with her daughter, Rose, to Belgravia in London, she is also sponsoring her sister, Lily Price, from New York for the London season. Spunky and outspoken Aunt Hetty has also come along. Frances’ prudence to protect Lily and her dowry get her embroiled in solving murder and thievery. Though she has much to learn about detecting, Frances is proud of her “knack for ferreting out information.” There are also sweet romantic overtures 💗 between Frances and her neighbor, George Hazelton, her best friend Fiona’s brother, as they partner up to solve the mysteries. Title: Long Time Gone by @charliedonlea 🎧 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I have been dying to read a book by Charlie Donlea, so I was very excited to be approved to read and listen to this one. I have heard great things about this author, and this book did not disappoint! Starting with the premise - The premise of this book was so good! A pathologist who has to do a 2 year fellowship under a pathologist she looks up to. Sloan is asked to submit her DNA to a genealogy site as part of her fellowship. She gets the go ahead from her adoptive parents, and soon finds out that not only did her and her bio parents go missing 30 years earlier, but that her adoption was not above board. Sloan and her parents disappearance was national news c30 years ago, and no one has seen or heard from anyone in the famil until Sloan’s DNA results come back letting her know she was baby Charlotte who disappeared 30 years ago. Sloan then sets out to find out what really happened to her and her parents 30 years ago. To do this, she has to reunite with her birth family, the Margolis family. They are wealthy and very powerful in the small town where they live. From this point on, things get WILD!! The plot was riveting, the character development was fascinating, and the twists and turns were jaw-dropping! I really enjoyed this book, and flew through it at a rapid pace. I had to know what was going to happen. The story was engrossing from the beginning all the way to the very end. Donlea’s writing style pulled me right into the story, and I was completely immersed in what was happening. I am definitely a new fan! Book: Learn Your Lesson by Kandi Steiner Rating: 4.5 / 5 ⭐ Thoughts: This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! I loved both the main characters and especially loved seeing Chloe, the FMC, build new relationships, not only with Will, the MMC, but also with the others, like Chef and the girls. There was a perfect balance in this book between a little bit of angst and still not too much of a slow burn.
