Recensie Koude harten • Gunnar Staalesen Koude harten is een nieuw boek in de serie rond de Noorse privédetective Varg Veum. Wanneer zijn zoon Thomas trouwt moet hij terugdenken aan een zaak waaraan hij een halfjaar eerder werkte, waarbij een oud vriendinnetje van Thomas zijn hulp inriep. Hege Jensen klopt aan bij Veum om haar verdwenen vriendin Maggi op te sporen. Beiden zijn verslaafd en tippelen om aan geld te komen, waarbij ze vaak in aanraking komen met foute mannen. Veum besluit Maggi op te sporen maar dat is tegen de zin van zowel de pooiers van Hege en Maggi als de politie. Het blijkt een gevaarlijke zoektocht te worden. De thrillers van Gunnar Staalesen staan bekend om hun sfeer en het aparte hoofdpersonage Varg Veum. Ook in Koude harten waan je je al snel in de Noorse bergen. Staalesen kan zowel landschap als personages mooi omschrijven in een geleidelijke opbouw. Het verhaal gaat niet heel snel maar legt beetje bij beetje meer bloot over de levens van alle betrokkenen. Al is Veum geen jonge man meer, hij bijt zich vast in deze zaak en laat zich door niemand van zijn stuk brengen. Aan dit boek zit beslist een gevaarlijk kantje dat de spanning steeds wat meer weet op te bouwen. Wanneer Veum geheimen uit het verleden weet bloot te leggen komen enkele schokkende zaken naar boven. Dit verhaal grijpt daarom ook aan en toont op een realistische manier wat opgroeien in een slechte thuissituatie met kinderen kan doen. ★★★.5 Gideon Nav. Love of my life. Cavalier of my heart. Oh, how I adore you. This was one of my most highly anticipated reads, so much so that I kept pushing back on when I was actually gonna get around to reading it. I wanted to wait for the perfect time, perfect environment, perfect mental state, all that extra stuff. But I told myself back in January that 2024 would be the year I’d finally tackle The Locked Tomb, and I’m so, so glad to have knocked the first book off my TBR pile. Have a quick bullet list of my thoughts: - Funnier than I expected but also incredibly bizarre and… confusing? If you asked me what this book is about, I wouldn’t be able to give you a straight answer. - Really interesting and unique magic system. Even though it had me occasionally scrunching my face up in disgust, I absolutely loved how it never shied away from the more grotesque descriptions of necromancy. - Some parts dragged a little too much (hence the .5 instead of a solid 4 stars) but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the mystery unfold alongside the characters and thought the payoff at the end was well worth it. - While I can’t say I didn’t struggle while reading (Muir’s vocab had me pulling out my dictionary app every other page), the fact that I was able to finish it at all speaks volumes about the author’s talents. - Griddlehark. 📚 BUTCHER & BLACKBIRD REVIEW ✍️ This month, K finally picked up Butcher & Blackbird by @brynne_weaver I'd seen it mentioned a lot on booksta and it sounded right up my street and let me tell you, I had so much fun reading this book. ❤️ It managed to be funny, sweet, gory (but without being TOO gory) and spicy what a perfect combo. Book review 📕 I need to be at Lancaster prep immediately!!! Monica Murphy has done it again with Carolina and West💕 I was drawn to this book because of the cover and sprayed edges (not forgetting how much I loved a million kisses in your lifetime) and I’m so glad I finally read it! 🩷 The book starts with a steamy night in Paris which is just perfection 🥰 then moves to Lancaster prep which can never go wrong, and progresses into West’s and Carolina’s adult life. This book is filled with spice 🌶️ but it also shows great character development, touches on grief and shows a bigger timeline than most romances🌸 Weston is an absolute DREAM and I want him in my life immediately! The way he worships Carolina makes me jealous 🥲 I really enjoyed how we went from them being together to them not talking for years because of a big scandal, because then you get to see how they rekindle their love and get to see him work his arse off to get her back 😙 Carolina’s development during the book is lovely to read because you can see her cold heart melt away once she’s with Weston and discovering a new way to live 🥹 This was honestly one of my favourite books this year! currently reading diaries 💌 it’s such a rainy wednesday in london which makes me wanna dive back into bed with my book all day. here’s what i’m currently reading: 📖 physical reads: so this week i have been just obsessed with acotar. the fact that last week i just randomly decided to do a reread?! i have inhaled this book… i’ve been reading it relatively slowly, i’m drinking in every single part of it. it’s so beautifully done. I’m currently under the mountain, if you know you know. will i make it back out .. probably not ⛰️ 📱kindle reads: i cancelled my kindle unlimited subscription as I wasn’t using it so much, but I think i’m going to buy the acotar series on kindle so that I have it for reading in bed at night and for my holiday. I also have addicted to you on my kindle but it’s not pulling me in, i’ve seen SUCH mixed reviews on it & not sure if it’s for me?? 🎧 audiobooks: i finished the thursday murder club series (first 3) and loved them so much. genuinely would laugh to myself whilst listening to them 😂 i’ve just finished the family experiment by john marrs and it’s good .. very complex but one of those books that’s made for audio! i’ve just started ‘bad apple’ by alice hunter & i’m LOVING!! hope you’re all having a good week, it’s raining soooo much in london but i do love a bit of rain time to time. looking forward to a long weekend with marty at hay festival ❣️

Об этом часто был весь мой книжный жизненный опыт, что слишком уж часто у комиксов или серийных книг нет переизданий и можно достать только часть томов. Но это оказался совсем не тот случай. ⠀ Конечно, «Бакуман» для меня не новинка, потому что ну не читаю я сейчас практически ничего нового, потому что зачем это делать, когда выходит всё, что я любила с подросткового возраста. Что, в свою очередь, порождает желания обладать некоторыми другими любимыми вещами, поэтому у меня теперь есть несколько томов любимых вещей на английском. ⠀ О чём «Бакуман»? В первую очередь он, конечно, он о манге и её создании, но больше всего я ценю эту серию за межчеловеческие отношения: это сразу и про дружбу, и про любовь, и про коллег. The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💭Which Christie plot twist shocked you the most? Every Christie book is special in their own way. However, there are a handful that I’ll always recommend people to read because they are so iconic in their own right. Naturally, The ABC Murders is part of that group. It’s one of the first books I always recommend to read for those new to Agatha Christie. As it was May’s official pick for #readchristie2024 , it was great opportunity to reread this mystery classic. Christie really did say “oh you want a page turner? Say no more.” This title, alongside The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, reflect the utter genius and originality of Christie’s writing. I reread this book in just a day because it’s impossible to put down. If you’ve never read this book, you are in for a real treat. I would love to read this book again for the first time. Book 44 of 2024 is “The Ten Thousand Doors of January” by @alix.e.harrow, read to fulfil @the52bookclub prompt “hybrid genre”. It was also @theglossbookclub book of the month for August 2022. I really enjoyed this debut novel. It explores the very relevant themes of racism, the fear of “other”, family lost & found & self discovery for our heroine January. Now Luke is ready to talk and filmmaker Cassidy Chambers wants to be the one to tell his story. But as she delves deeper into the past, Cassidy begins to fear what lies ahead, and the secrets buried along the way. 💭 I absolutely loved this book! This was a one day read for me and the plot just moved so well. The pace of this book changes as the drama builds and while it starts a little slow, developing the characters, the build up is done really well and by the time we reach the end of the book it becomes very fast paced. The twists were also brilliantly done. There’s a few moments that had me questioning the characters and their motives for getting the story out but I was so far off what was going on. Reading a lot of thrillers, it’s not often that I’m completely off the ending and I loved that I wasn’t able to guess what was happening. Given the theme of the documentary, the imagery was also beautifully done. The places visited by Cassidy and Luke, especially in the travels around Thailand were so detailed and really helped engage with the story. 雲邊咖啡館 ▌作者｜Zoody ▌出版｜高寶書版 ▌心得｜ 首先感謝高寶書版 @gobooks.youth 的嘉雯邀請閱讀這本甜蜜浪漫的作品。 有太多作品發生在咖啡館裡，上班族vs咖啡館老闆的配對層出不窮，都市愛情故事更是數也數不清，但是姜迎和雲峴之間的故事仍然很吸引我。為什麼呢？ 我個人很喜歡女主角姜迎的個性，除了在工作上認真付出，對於自己的人生也是全力以赴，她有著說走就走、活在當下的率性，興趣廣泛、面貌豐富的多元性，這樣性格的女主角自然讓人傾倒，也吸引了男主角雲峴。 循規蹈矩、按部就班生活了30年的雲峴，事業有成、一帆風順，但他覺得人生沒有值得期待的事，母親對於自己辭去高薪工作、跑去開咖啡館的行為是「缺乏思考的衝動行為」、「就跟你爸一樣」，可以說姜迎的出現，讓雲峴開始有了「活著的真切感」。 我也很喜歡男女主角之間的相處模式，喜歡看雲峴總是把好吃的藏在冰箱裡要留給姜迎、喜歡看姜迎拉著雲峴說走就走地到處旅遊、參加各式活動，兩人平凡的日常中點綴著火花，並不會讓人覺得像流水帳一樣無趣。Zoody的文字很容易讓人腦中產生畫面，看著都忍不住露出「姨母笑」，闔上書本只會覺得滿足、心裡甜甜的，是我會收在書單裡，心情不好、壓力大的時候，拿出來重溫或是洗眼睛的作品。 在收到邀請前、我其實已經在網路上讀過Zoody的幾本作品，很喜歡作者的文筆，男女主角的智商都在線、都是在各自領域努力奮鬥的人，個性上也不會太強勢，即使有各自的缺點、卻都是很好的人，劇情及對白都很流暢，讀起來不會讓人感到不耐煩。希望未來有機會看到更多Zoody的作品！ #reading #閱讀分享 #閱讀記錄 #雲邊咖啡館 #zoody #読む #読書 #高寶書版 #readingchallenge #2024_011 #閱讀x桌遊 #boardgames #胡鬧咖啡廳 #coffeerush #柏龍玩具

Do yourself a favour and read Red River Road. • @qbdbooks Reading Challenge 2024 📚 Must-See Sights: A thriller to keep me on the edge of my plane seat. • #QBDBooks Books of the Month - May • Katy is way out of her comfort zone, she has joined the Van Life movement but not by choice. Her sister went missing last year and no one is helping find her so Katy has packed up her life and hit the road to find Phoebe herself. Along the way she meets Lily who is running from her own problems and begs Katy to let her join, saying she will be able to help. As they retrace Phoebe's steps from her Instagram posts it becomes clear that being out on the road is just as dangerous as Katy expected it would be. Are they being followed? Are the hints being left about Phoebe or does someone know more about Lily than she would like. Both Katy and Lily are frustrating but likeable characters. Lily is escaping an abusive relationship and always looking over her shoulder. Katy is afraid of being on the road and struggling to cope with being out of her safe space. The trauma experienced by both can be hard to read. The chapters are short and early on I found myself taking frequent micro breaks to digest the difficult content. But once we got closer to finding answers I couldn't put it down. Red River Road is confronting but also a story about strength. Was this book the most bizarre thing I've ever read? Absolutely. Did I audibly say "ow"? Sure did. Did it make me LOL basically the entire book? Also yes. Is this the worst book I've ever read? Surprisingly, no. But I've also never read a book more appropriately named. Let me get this straight..a door? I'm trying very hard to do this review without ruining it, but that's really hard. Kind of like the doorknob. 😂 Kidding, but I'm not. Lysol came out, and I was like "oh no girl, don't do it." But then she brought out something square and I was like GIRL..DON'T DO IT! I don't know how to rate a book that kept me entertained and was a well written trainwreck. It was kind of like how a bad comedy show keeps your attention. They got jokes. Some are good while others aren't, but it's also a disaster that you can't look away from. I couldn't look away. My poor husband had to get an ear full, because how do I not talk about this book? Door smut..it's a thing. Who knew? He did! I've been complaining about all these "good girl" books. I wanted a "good boy" because women are awesome and not always on their knees for a man. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Before We Were Innocent” by Ella Berman This read was a bit unexpected for me. I was expecting the plot to unfold a bit differently - more emphasis on the trial and struggle in Greece, more emphasis on the immediate aftermath, and quite honestly, I was not expecting the incident to happen like it did. I thought there would be more viciousness/evil involved. However, my expectations aside, I thought it was a good attempt at untangling the messiness that is the teen years, especially for young women trying to find themselves. Book 43 of 2024: Born a Crime by Trevor Noah I’ve heard great reviews of this audiobook and it’s been on my TBR for years. It did not disappoint. Listening to Trevor Noah tell his story is definitely the way to go on this one if you have the option. As someone who believes everyone has a story to tell, I’m almost always a fan of memoirs if they’re well-written (or told) and shared in a meaningful way. Noah definitely has a story, having grown up in South Africa during apartheid. And he’s a stellar storyteller and communicator as a tv personality and comedian. His book is funny but it also contains important messages regarding race, culture, and language. I feel like his story is pretty unique; it’s definitely not like any other I’ve heard before. He has some pretty wild stories about his childhood, teenage, and young adult experiences! I think what I enjoyed the most were his undying love and respect for his mother, whose strength and character were unwavering. It’s funny when it needs to be, and raw and devastating when there is no other choice. What is the last memoir you read?
