A couple of recent reads featuring a very surprised Clem. Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck (translated by Michael Hofman) was an interesting read, and I loved the setting of East Germany, however I felt the writing was quite hard to follow at times. I enjoyed the exploration of identity and the themes of how trauma is often passed down through generations, but the age gap between the main characters was just kinda gross and I felt was handled more convincingly in other books I have read (see Cleopatra and Frankenstein). Also Hans is truly an awful character, and Katherina was just so bland, I feel that the author needed them to act a certain way to fit the wider metaphor of generational identity and it sacrificed the ‘realness’ of the characters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Housemaid by Freida McFadden was an altogether different read. An easy going thriller that kept me gripped throughout. I will say this is reminiscent of another VERY popular thriller and the main twist felt like that story but in reverse (I won’t give any spoilers) but I did guess some of the twists. I think some of the discussions around mental health were a bit clunky at times, as were the discussions around weight so something to keep in mind. This past Saturday, I had the incredible opportunity of attending @tafestival, a vibrant celebration of Taiwanese culture and heritage. I was honored to be invited by @taiwaneseam_org to serve as a booth ambassador, engaging with fellow book lovers and local authors. The conversations I had with four brilliant Taiwanese American writers across genres were truly enlightening and heartwarming, as we delved into everything Taiwanese and books 🥰 ✊🏼 @eeewhysee's passionate speech about defining Taiwanese American identity on our own terms made me tear up a bit. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of LOUDER THAN THE LIES (out 10/22). Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan ⭐️⭐️.5/5 “Because long before he’d made this sacrifice, he’d magnified love like no one else she knew.” You know when you read a book that, in theory, you should love but it just isn’t doing it for you? And you keep reading and you keep trying because you want to make it work? That was Fathomfolk for me… This book had all things fantasy that I love - complex social dynamics, lovable yet frustrating characters, a world based on (or influenced by) various mythologies, and yet this book just didn’t seem to work for me. Fathomfolk follows the complicated class and social dynamics of Tiankawi - a place where humans and Fathomfolk (sea people including sirens, kelpies, seawitches, etc.) attempt to coexist but in reality, humans are dominating the Fathomfolk and are doing everything they can to keep it that way. Mira, half-siren, attempts to support both human and Fathomfolk in her role as captain of the border guard and her partner, Kai, water dragon, fights for the rights of Fathomfolk on the council. But when Kai sister, Nami, arrives and starts to meeting with a group determined to better the lives of Fathomfolk, things get messy. Although I’m usually ok with third person narratives, this one felt too disconnected. I didn’t really feel the ebbs and flows of the emotions nor did I feel overly connected to the characters. I wanted to love this book but between the writing style, the lack of detail in the characters, and the slightly confusing plot, I just couldn’t… Now, the book left on a cliffhanger… Will I monitor for when the book comes out and potentially read it just to see what happens? Yes. So I’m going to remain hopeful and will continue to try and get myself to love (or at least like) this series.

On one hand, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 radiates a warm, atmospheric tone, filled with city escapades and thrilling missions. On the other hand, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 offers a cooler-hued introspection, laced with depression and melancholy. Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez ♾️⭐️s I read this book in one sitting, it’s THAT good! I went into this book blind, literally didn’t even know the synopsis, so if you’d like to do that don’t read anything below! Emma and Justin both have the same curse. They date someone, break up and then the person they were dating meets their soulmate. So naturally, they team up to help each other meet their own soul mate. Emma is a girl who doesn’t know how to put down roots and travels with her best friend, changing travel nurse jobs every 3 months. Justin is just a guy trying to break a curse and meet his forever girl! He gives off golden retriever energy and is the definition of if he wanted to he would! Plus he’s a planner so that made my heart swoooon, love an intentional man! While this book does tackle some very intense topics (mental illnesses, PTSD, neglect), the characters communicate well throughout which is amazing because I hate a miscommunication trope! I had a smile on my face from their banter, sweet moments and overall care for each other throughout the read. Plus Emma’s best friend Maddy is the best friend/sister we all need! A little what this week(s) to kick off a Monday 🤩⭐️🌻 I have been loving the sunshine that has finally arrived these past few weeks. I’m praying it’s here to stay!! Reading: I’ve recently finished Really Good Actually, and whilst I enjoyed it, I expected to love it more. Currently I’m reading A person is a prayer* and it’s so so good, I only have a few chapters left!! Watching: I binged the entire series of Selling the OC last week and I loved it… so much drama! Lewis and I have also been watching Race Across the World, Shogun and Baby Reindeer. Listening: I don’t have any audiobooks on the go, but I’ve been obsessed with @jrakz new album Loop - it’s been the perfect soundtrack to a sunny weekend of reading in the garden and I’m seeing him live on Thursday yay! Doing: As ever, my week has consisted of lots of dog walks, work and reading. Last weekend I went to one of my favourite book shops (@thegrovebookshop) for a browse. And, this past weekend I’ve seen friends and family, had pizza and sangria in the garden and done some wedding planning (it’s going to come around so quickly and I’m so excited eek!!) I just finished this book by @fmcfaddenauthor and I was not disappointed!! The book had me engaged right from the start. There was a steady build up to the plot twist, with another shocking revelation at the end. I may, or may not have stayed up really late just so I could find out what happened 😅😅 I would give this book a 3.5/5. It is a good book, but it isn’t my top three books written by the author! I’m still kind of in a reading slump. There are a couple books I didn’t finish, a couple I did and didn’t feel like posting here, and I’m reading a big book that sits on my nightstand and is too big to take on the metro so it’s going to take me a while to finish that one. But I just finished reading Good Material by Dolly Alderton and want to post about it before I leave for Japan tomorrow! I think I liked Alderton’s other books better than this one but this book grew on me towards the end. It’s a story about the breakup of Andy and Jen and told from the perspective of Andy and The Madness he goes through in the months after the breakup. I almost didn’t want to finish this book because I was getting tired of Andy being down all the time but then towards the end the point of view changes to his ex-girlfriend Jen and you see how she handled the breakup and some of her reflections really resonated with me. I also appreciated Alderton told this from the perspective of a man because so many break up stories always tell the sad woman’s story.

For those who missed my previous explanation: ✨️ With traditional book clubs, there's often the issue of a) finding a book everyone wants to read and b) rushing to finish by the given deadline. Those pressures can actually turn book lovers OFF to reading, especially for those new or returning to reading. Instead of focusing on the books, Silent Book Club strives to focus on the COMMUNITY. ✨️ You can bring any book in any format (eBook, audiobook, comic book), support local businesses, and meet friends or strangers to experience companionable silence. For an hour, you can sit and read undisturbed (something I know SO MANY of you book-loving mamas need time and space for). ✨️ Everyone is welcome!
