📚Book Review📚 🕵️Sleuths and Scoundrels🕵️ features three short stories as part of the ☁️Smoke and Shadows☁️ book by L.L. Gray This set of stories is perfect for a stormy, rainy day, where the tea is piping hot and the blankets are warm. Also, the blankets are good for when it gets a teensy bit scary. Okay maybe not scary but it’s definitely unsettling, in the best way though! This set of short stories focuses on Cameron Blaze, a unique supernatural who owes her life to the goddess, Brigitte. From a creepy supernatural carnival complete with disappearances and haunted houses, to unexpected but righteous revenge on Cam’s best friend Sloane’s ex-boyfriend, and finishing up with a security job for mysteriously vanishing paintings, the whole book is a wildly fun (and unsettling) ride! Let’s just say you’ll develop a strong preference for landscape paintings after the last one! The part I loved the most about these stories is the fullness of the characters. Cameron, Sloan, Brigitte, Logan - they all stood out in their own way with clearly defined wants, needs and desires, with relationships that were entertaining and enlightening. There was only one drawback for me and it’s particular to this short story set-up. And that is that more I read, the more books are added to my TBR! It’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s probably a good thing. For me, for L.L. Gray, and for anyone reading this review. But not for my TBR. For me, writing is a lot like golf. Both require a lot of mental work. Both are contests to better yourself but contests where you only compete against yourself, because your actions cannot, and should not, impact other writers. Both also are hard as heck and involve more failure than success. Both also feel incredible when everything comes together and "clicks". Point of Impact has published 8 books in the last two years. Last year I took a lot of time off. I really wanted to take a step back from anything ‘productive’ and focus on solely getting my nervous system back into balance after many, many years on constant go-mode. During this time off not only was I able to really recalibrate my nervous system, but I also got VERY clear on what kind of life I envisioned for myself. How I really actually hated being busy 88% of the time, and how much I love living a more slow life. There were no more constant worries about where I was “supposed” to be headed in terms of career. For the first time I finally just let it all go & surrendered to spending time doing things that simply made sense to me, and made me feel lit up inside. For those who know, I self published my debut poetry book back in 2021. I always tossed with the thought of writing & publishing more, but found it hard to write poetry as I write poetry best when I’m in the deep in the slumps. So I pushed writing to the side for three years, and experimented with other hobbies. Flash forward to January this year & I had no intention of putting another book together but everything was quite literally pouring out of me. I felt like I had no choice but to write my vision onto paper, and for the first time I pursued something head on for the sole fact that it was fun, and enthralling and how I would find my heart cracked wide open sobbing as I was writing these scenes with these characters and how that fire relit within me again, but for the right reasons. 104k words later and here we are. When I set out from Le Puy En Velay in France I spent many nights camping out, normally in woodland areas in my small tent. The journey started as a very isolated experience, my French was poor and I didn’t meet so many people. But once or twice a week I would splash out and stay in pilgrim accommodation, an albuergue/dormitory to get a shower and to recharge my batteries (mentally and literally!). I would often arrive exhausted, wash, eat and head to sleep early. I’d then wake up with people I’d never seen before, sleeping in the beds surrounding me. The Bee king by @mathildazellerauthor via the book subscription box @yourpaperquest ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 This story follows Alice who comes from a poor family, living in a poor part of the empire, they are continually visited by monsters who take their young girls sold by their parents. This is a weird world, with the empire based off the Bee King ruling and the Bee Queen. We read about the Bee Drones, and the honey and jelly, it's a bee hive but they are humans. I really loved the uniqueness of this, and the character development. This story is all plot based and follows Alice, with secondary characters thrown in there and I loved it. I definitely think this could have done with more politics and world building, but in many ways the wonder and mystery surrounding the world and the reader being in the unknown was a credit to the book too. The Bee King goes to this town to find himself a bride, and instead of letting her sisters be chosen, or any other girl, she pits herself as a bride. When she gets chosen she goes on this unknown journey, with twists and turns. It is quite fast paced, but doesn't have much world building. I decided to step up my "CRAFT" for this week's #BoardGameProtoHype My partner's family gifted me and her a #gansai #watercolour workshop run by @vanessalimshuyi and @cassart1984 . And though I had intended to digitally colour the Toads in #WaroftheToads, I think I've found a new medium. Anyway to minimise the amount of time I spend in front of a screen! Gansai's (顔彩) method is surprisingly similar to colouring digitally - you paint your outline in black ink before colouring. It traditionally uses 和紙 (Washi) a paper with long strong fibres of the Mulberry Tree. The surface doesn't lend well to sketching. Instead you trace your chosen artwork, paint your outlines, then colour. #Kuretake Gansai Tambi: The paints are more opaque and retain their vibrancy better when watered down than western watercolour and normally, outlines are done last in western painting styles (as fair as I am aware). The flowers for the workshop came from the Honzou Zufu (#本草図譜) a scientific study of plants in the Edo Period by the samurai Iwasaki Tsunemasa (岩崎 常正 or 灌園, 1786–1842) . I intend to use them as inspiration for backgrounds in War of the Toads. It should correctly scale the Toads, making them seem small beneath towering flowers, reeds and grasses. The Washi was then mounted to a wooden board using starch glue and water. I like the lightness and delicacy of my work, the thin illustrative lines and patchy brushwork of pale greens hopefully won't pull focus away from each Toad. But we'll have to see; always a work in progress, eh? The last image, is my partner's work. At the moment, we’re open to submissions for our new publishing venture, The Northern Weird Project. But we also have a few other things planned that I hope interest you as much as it does for us! *The Northern Weird Project: A pocket-sized book series of 5-6 titles from authors living in the North of England who are also engaging in the North as setting, subject, character or any way that highlights this part of the country. *New acquisitions: Our goal is to acquire 1-3 new standalone novels in 2025/26. This will either be from an open submission period or acquired via agents. *Horror Anthology: This one is particularly exciting! We plan to release a horror anthology with a guest editor. All the writing featured will be by trans and/or non-binary authors. Please be on the lookout for this project! The guest editor will be acquiring to their taste but we hope there will be a couple of spots open to unsolicited submissions. *Expand Into Audio: We love audiobooks! (And I think many readers do, too.) However, producing an audiobook is super cost-prohibitive for small publishers. We will actively look into grants or other funding options so we can record and offer our books as audiobooks. *Attend Events: There are so many amazing author/book festivals in the UK but we haven’t been able to attend any. We’re hoping to change that so you can reach out to us directly and learn more about our company and promote our authors. We Bored Wolves @joannaboredwolf + @stefan6bpencil will be in Warsaw in ten days for the release of our new @pawel_olszczynski Paweł Olszczyński zine “Braid vs Chain” (BW42, @lastriko design), Friday, May 24 @turnus.na.wolskiej (Wolska 46/48) beginning 7 p.m. and including @avtomatmusic DJ set and opening of three-day exhibition w/ @trykoteka of Paweł’s original graphite drawings from the zine. We’re a two-daughter press and generally speaking our rhythm is alternating bookjourneys so each parent-publisher gets a chance to regenerate on the road without having to react to spillage, shriekage, etc. But as we’ll also be at the Most Beautiful Polish Books 2023 @themostbeautifulpolishbooks ceremony the evening before (we have a pair of nominations), we recruited a grandmother and decided to play hooky.
