Kat is a fantastic character – she’s a dedicated and tenacious detective, but also emotionally vulnerable and slightly morally grey. This installment has Kat struggling to balance her home life and her work life, with enough attention paid to her marriage and motherhood to be compelling but still allowing the police procedural aspect to take center stage. Claire decides to go on a vacation with her friends and her estranged husband to take a break from work. What she didn't expect is that they have to spend their vacation in a forest with no signal. And slowly her group becomes smaller and smaller. Were they hunted by some wild animal, someone who was hiding in the forest or is it one among their group? She knew that only one of them is going to make it alive. I was thrilled in the starting and slowly my interest dropped and it is bit easy to predict the killer. It reminded me of the fact that we don't know anyone's past fully irrespective of how much close we are to them. @comey’s most recent novel, Westport, is a binge worthy crime thriller. I switched back and forth between the e-book and audiobook so I finished this book in less than 24 hours! The main character, Nora Carleton, is the type of female protagonist that I love - smart, strong, and not afraid to voice her opinions. She is lead council at the world’s largest hedge fund when a coworker is murdered. She is set up to become the police’s main suspect so she must figure out who the real killer is! If you read Central Park West, some characters will be familiar, however either book can be read as a standalone novel. I really enjoyed both books and this seals Comey as a must read author for me. An exciting and enjoyable ride! This book was fantastic; the subject matter was engaging and the pace was ideal! It contained many unexpected twists. This book is for you if you enjoy an excellent crime fiction that includes these elements! I was engrossed in the narrative's seamless transition between Catherine and Clayton's perspectives, and I found myself unable to put it down because I was constantly curious about what was happening to them. It was handled effectively, in my opinion, and it wasn't overly political, which is something I like. The plot moved along at a good clip and remained engaging throughout. The way Clayton and Catherine's tales ultimately came together was also quite satisfying to me. The Cerberus Affair by Charlotte Valentine is an amazing fast paced thriller that I have enjoyed recently. The story revolves around Catherine Preston, the female lead character who is an ex-investigative journalist. Catherine wants to expose the murderers of her friend, a uk junior health minister. Clayton is another important character whose work plays important role in Catherine's investigation. Soon Catherine finds herself into the vortex of corporate corruption and controversial genetic research. A lot of money is involved in the conspiracy and anybody who crosses their path can be eliminated. The perspectives of the book switches between Catherine and Clayton to grip the reader through out the novel. I also enjoyed out of the box characterisation of Catherine who is a bit older. The very first chapter grabs the attention of the reader and the entire novel maintains the integrity. Catherine's character never fails to amuse the reader im every situation. I love the bold and fearless nature in her strong nature. I must appreciate the fast pacing of the plot. The end of the book was really worth the read. I am sure every thriller fan is going to love this one. Now that her kid is off to college, Cathrine resolves to go back to investigative journalism, but her desire to return and discover what happened grows when her best friend passes away and she receives an email about it. This fast-paced book is chock-full of danger, love, twists, and mistrust. Valentine crafts a book that will keep you turning pages. The investigation of Huntington's disease in this well-researched book is another aspect I liked how the characters were used to protray it. The plot was one I didn't figure out until Valentine was ready for the reader to know, and every character made me wonder who to believe. I wasn't turned off by the main plot line of this work, even though it did deviate slightly from my expectations in terms of romance and genre mixing. I am eager to read more about these characters in the upcoming novels, of which this one is a part. The two of them got along well, and Clayton was a generous and compassionate man. Overall, an ingenious, suspenseful, and engrossing criminal thriller. A dash of steamy romance mixed in with a fast-paced, gripping thriller is The Cerberus Affair. The protagonist of the book is journalist Catherine, who is looking into her old university friend's unexplained death. She discovers there is a lot more to this story than she first imagined as she digs more into his life. The sparks really start to fly when Catherine meets Clayton Mortimer, a physicist. The primary characters in this book are older than you would think from typical mystery romances, which is something I really enjoyed about it. Catherine, who is in her fifties, has a son who is leaving for college. This was a welcome departure from the typical focus of mystery romances, which is usually on younger characters. This book does a good job of handling science, and you won't get mired down in obscure or hard-to-understand technical words. Overall, this book was enjoyable, simple to read, and interesting. Thank you @magicalbooktour for including me in this review tour. It's a fast-moving thriller with a clever government and medical conspiracy that kept me riveted the entire time. Compared to other recent thrillers I've read, it has more action, and towards the book's conclusion, I couldn't put it down. The recurring issues of nature vs. nurture and the topic of genetic research developments were also very interesting to me. Overall, I felt the author did a great job with her supporting cast, giving them just enough depth on their own and in their interactions to the main characters. Notably, I found Catherine, our heroine, to be incredibly likeable, despite my general cliched idea for female heroines in psychological thrillers! The Puppet Master is the third in the Major Crimes series and is absolutely fantastic. This series is so dark and gritty and I couldn’t recommend it enough. While this could probably be read as standalone I do recommend for it to be read in order for the character development. It’s incredibly fast paced and FULL of tension. The storyline for this is quite unique and very clever, it’s written so well 👌🏻 for me the thing I loved most is the group of detectives and I feel like I’d become attached to them. DCI Cara Elliott and DS Nate Griffin are very likeable and play a great part! The team of detectives are suffering personal struggles and some grief but nothing stops them from stopping a serial killer to protect the community. A complex investigation full of twists and suspense. I absolutely loved and devoured this book. Sam Holland’s writing style is superb and I really hope there will be more to this series. 4/10 Swallowed Film by Carter Smith Two friends are spending their last night together before Ben departs for LA. By way of trying to send him off with some cash, Dom accidentally involves Ben in a lurid drug smuggling operation. Things go south during the endeavour due to the cargo being more living than inanimate and soon the pair are faced with slim odds of survival and very ugly choices. Here's a bit of a different one. Not exactly a horror or at least lacking much of what would make it one, but more of light crime thriller drama with horror elements. It's the nature of the drugs (living bugs) that gives it the slight horror genre. They do create some pretty terrifying situations throughout. On paper it could read as horror but production elements all over just don't seem to support it. The dialogue and performances are the gem. Good writing, engaging and believable character relationships. The plot is pretty bare and lackluster. However surprising late coming MVP to Mark Patton, of Nightmare 2 fame, for really dynamic interesting antagonist in Rich. Honestly brought energy every second he was on screen. Also always love Jena Malone, feel she was somehow underused here. This is unique in concept but though the time is filled out with happenings, there's really not a ton that happens. I dunno, it's like it could have been a really tight short film. Cinematography is great, clearly made by talented folk, it was lacking a kind of gusto. Some suspense, some terror but never real scary spectacle, a kill or two but mostly sedate or offscreen. Kind of chase scenes, here is when suspense could have built but didn't. Even plenty of places for jumps, and they just didn't shoot it that way. My other gripe is that there was really no satisfying character arc for Ben. He had a plan, stuff happened, completes plan. No real development there. The bugs were the horror draw but we're also woefully underused or not made horrifying. A good horror score could help. Yeah not a great great horror or film but has qualities. I had the hardest time completing this book- not because it's bad or complicated or too long, it was almost like the universe conspired in rerouting me to other tasks the minute I picked it up. I know I'm late the to Millennium trilogy party, but better late than never. It was such an unexpected, enthralling read. The characters are so well drawn, it has one of my favorite traits i.e. of the characters all being gray. There is no goody two shoes which makes it all the more unpredictable. But also, you spot the *white sheep* and rouse suspicion. Most importantly, the first things I noted and loved about it were the digs and unearthing of capitalism, but that was sidelined later for obvious investigative reasons. As for the characters, there is a definitive satisfying arc for some of them. I like how Mikeal Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander flip the switch and make *just another job* the most important thing in their lives. I sense romantic tension in the upcoming plot. I can't wait to get my hands on the next two books of the series. Stay tuned to see how the triology unfolds. Love, G . . . . . Movie #10 of the year is Road House! Full disclosure: I’ve never seen the original Road House with Patrick Swayze, so I went into this new remake fresh aside from what I already knew from pop cultural osmosis. For a direct-to-streaming original, this is a truly winning piece of pulpy action that does its job and just about leaves when it’s ready. I understand why director Doug Liman was so adamant about trying to get this a theatrical release because considering what a blast this was to watch on streaming this would have made for a truly fine night at the movies. Transplanting the setting to a gritty town in the Florida Keys gives everything the feel of a good Travis McGee story from John D. MacDonald (Liman clearly knows this, as he almost immediately moves Gyllenhaal’s bouncer protagonist into a house boat.) Reframing the original film’s basic story into a brawling crime thriller like this is a brilliant move, and helps ground the movie and its characters. Gyllenhaal gets to flex his movie star charisma and makes what could easily have been a bland action lead into a character that is a lovably easygoing human wrecking ball of a person. The fight scenes are doled out carefully through the first few acts of the film, making them all the more exciting when they start. It’s nice to see Daniela Melchior pop up here, considering it’s been a minute since she made such a huge impression in The Suicide Squad, and Conor McGregor shows he has enough presence on screen to justify his inevitable future casting in supporting roles in action films to come. The movie gets a little dumber and dumber the longer it goes on but it’s overall a winner and undeniably the best action original action movie produced by any of the streaming giants to date (I’m pretty sure? It’s not exactly a high bar though.) Road House is streaming now, and is worth your time!
