ABIGAIL | REVIEW: Real Americans 💐 Thank you @prhaudio for the complimentary audiobook in exchange for an honest review! #prhpartner ⭐️: 4.25/5 stars Heralded as one of the most anticipated books of the year and a @readwithjenna book pick, Real Americans is the story of two families whose lives become entwined over generations - one wealthy, white Americans and the other Chinese immigrants - and asks “What makes us who we are? How far would we go to shape our own destinies?” This book is the equivalent (in my mind) to if The Vanishing Half and Crazy Rich Asians had a baby. Real Americans is a multigenerational saga that’s light on character development and full of entertainment value centered around privilege and the family complexities that ensue. As a result, it was largely propulsive, particularly on audio, and made for entertaining reading. As can be equally common with a multigenerational timeline, there were many broader themes simply touched upon that I would’ve loved to explore further. Additionally, there were many elements of the story that felt like they could’ve been applied to a variety of character demographics, making it seemingly lackluster for a reader looking for a deep dive on the Chinese American perspective. Where this novel really shines in my mind (aside from the obvious entertainment value and propulsive nature) is its potential for book club discussions. As I mentioned, there were so many themes and modern day questions introduced in this narrative (i.e. privilege, modern medicine, abandonment, found family, etc.) that would’ve absolutely made my reading experience richer had I been discussing them alongside my reading journey. Overall, this makes for an entertaining read, and I’m glad to have listened to it! That said, if you are looking for a deeper, richer multigenerational saga, this may not be for you. Listen for the Lie was a book written for me. It’s a murder mystery with podcast elements and a sarcastic main character who I totally loved. Everyone thinks that Lucy killed her best friend and Lucy has no memory of the event so she isn’t even positive she didn’t do it. A well known podcaster is doing a series on the night in question and Lucy is forced to return to her hometown and confront her past. What exactly happened to Lucy’s friend, Savvy? I was so engaged in the writing and binged this book in 2 sittings. Lucy is the type of main character who I understood and whose humor aligns with mine. She’s a mess but she doesn’t apologize for being herself. This was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and one of my favorite books I’ve read this year! I’m always a sucker for books that incorporate podcasts. No quote as to not give anything away. But just read this one! . . Synopsis 📖: Living and dying for freedom, Slavomir retells his experience surviving and escaping a Russian labor camp. No stone is left unturned in this expose of one man’s utterly crushing human experience. Written in such a pointed, excruciatingly unflinching manner, you simply cannot help but to tear through these pages. This story and author’s writing will haunt me for all of my days. . . . Undoubtedly a must-read and will definitely be one of the first books I recommend to everyone from here on out. WOW does this book have staying power! As a Polish person myself, this story hit so close to home and makes me yearn to read more from Polish authors. This book is gripping, explosive, and down-right terrifying at multiple points. Having toured KGB prisons in Lithuania, I can say that this author’s description of torture at the hands of the Soviets was spot on and absolutely horrifying. If you go into books skeptical and wanting to point out “well I wouldn’t have done that” or “but that’s not how I would experience that”, then this book will not be for you. The plot about young teen girls playing this dangerous and dark “game” at this old cemetery was fun, and I love a good ol’ “legend has it” storyline mixed in. I enjoyed the girls’ experiences and how the game was set up. Fun, dark, and I loved the ending!

90% of this book is phenomenal and 10% is the most ridiculous soap opera. I’m glad this was a buddy read, because there were many reaction texts going back and forth! Kristin Hannah can be hit or miss for me, but this is a powerful and emotional book about nurses in Vietnam. The war itself was obviously traumatic, but that was compounded when they returned to States and had to fight to even have their presence in Vietnam acknowledged. I’ll admit, I never really thought about women in Vietnam but I also definitely assumed there were some. There always are. There have been women at the front in every war. Frankie struggles with PTSD, unable to forget what she saw in Vietnam or move forward. How can you forget though when everyone else seems determined to erase those experiences completely? When you have to remember, otherwise no one else will? I also loved the focus on female friendship. As the war stripped friends and family and lovers from her, she always had the other nurses. For all the obsession with romance and marriage and soulmates in our culture, female friendships are often more lasting and more supportive. The Heiress Gets A Duke by Harper St. George Since The Bridgerton Series is coming out with a new season this week I thought this was appropriate. I wish the whole series was on BOTM because I loved this book. It was very royal and reminded me a lot of the Bridgerton series. The writing had a snooty banter to it and it was comical. I also loved the fight to stay away from each other. You knew how the ending was going to be. This book reminded me a lot of The Viscount Who Loved Me book by Julia Quinn. So read this if it is your vibe. I loved the storyline of August Crenshaw, the Heiress and Evan Sterling, the Duke of Rothschild. August isn’t a typical Heiress that you normally meet. She gets her hands dirty and prefers to spend her time working in the family steel and railroad business. The Palate Cleanser Method Sometimes after you end a particularly impactful book (such as finishing a fantasy series, reading an amazing 5 star read, a breath-taking thriller, or just a deeply sad book) you need a palate cleanser novel. Here’s the thing, most of the time these aren’t 5 star reads, and they don’t have to be. Their main goal is to take your mind off of your troubles/ previous read and get ready for the next book on your TBR. Here’s what I look for in good palate cleanser novel: •light/ not too heavy •stand-alone (with a few exceptions) •different from my usual tastes Usually, my palate cleansers are 3-3.5 star reads. (With the exception of The English Know Wool, because it’s a short 5 star read). I believe 3 star books they have their place! We were at the beach this past weekend so I wanted to share these three books since they all have beach covers… but each of these is more than just a beachy read so you will want to add them to your summer reading list! Tourist Season- I love @authorbrendanovak and always look forward to her new summer book! This new release is all about romance and suspense. Her books always have such good characters and you will become fully intwined with Ismay, Remy and Bo. How much do you trust your own heart? I would recommend not only this one, but be sure to check out more of Novak’s books… she has so many!! The Seaside Sisters- I just finished this one right before we got to the beach and really enjoyed it. It was a good read that is perfect for grabbing while you put your feet in the sand and waste the day away. All the women in the story are just a little lost and find help in each other just when they need it. They all find the confidence to take the next steps in their lives and each one will bring a smile to your face! I recommend you check out @pamelamkelley if you haven’t yet. The Same Bright Stars- I just started this one and I’m excited because all of @joellawriting books have such great reviews. The Return of Ellie Black ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ugh. Another difficult one. This was INCREDIBLY hard for me to read. The subject matter: Abducted girls aged 7-17. I was so incredibly uncomfortable during this entire story. I kept picturing my own girls and my very worst nightmare coming true. I am still uncomfortable and scared. Yet, I could not put this down. I read it in less than 48 hours. I had to know. Tense, uncomfortable situations and subject matter. Difficult and hardly likable characters. Anxiety. Chest tightening. But how was it going to end? If you can handle uncomfortable, this was well written with some good twists. Ok, so there are plot holes. Like a few big ones that are abrupt enough to make me wonder if there initially was something there, and it was edited out (this book is 400+ pages, after all, although that hasn’t stopped many authors before — looking at you, S. King). It largely has promise, but in places goes from Daring to washy Disney Princess playing at being a journalist among Chicago gangsters. Source? Am formerly a journalist. Overall, fun romp of a read if you don’t take it too seriously. I learned a good bit about Chicago in the roaring 20s, and thoroughly enjoyed Cunningham’s writing style. Despite the length, this was a breeze of a read! A true page turner with lots of intriguing characters battling their own demons, whilst battling crime in the streets of Stockholm. And the ending of this one, wow. Cassie is a female firefighter who has to move from Austin to a small town near Boston to help her aging mother, among other reasons. she transfers from a pretty progressive firehouse to one that may be a bit lost in time, and has to deal with a grumpy old boys club and also help train a rookie who she may or may not be attracted to. Book Review ☀️ Just for the Summer By Abby Jimenez ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5 There are SO many great new romance releases from the last few weeks. Just for the Summer was another one of my most anticipated new books in 2024. I enjoyed it so much! Emma and Justin have something in common - both of them have a cursed love life. Anyone they date goes on to meet their soulmate as soon as they break up. They meet on the internet and decide to team up to break both their curses. If they date each other, their curses will cancel the other out, letting them move on to find their own soulmates after they amicably break up. This leads to Emma taking a traveling nurse position in Minnesota where she can date Justin, just for the summer. I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book in Abby Jimenez’s Part of Your World series. She just writes the best, most relatable characters. I loved Justin so much! He was the sweetest to Emma. The little date surveys and invitations he put together were too cute! I thought Emma was such a dynamic character and I loved reading about how she struggled with and overcame her complicated relationship with her mom. I also loved Emma’s relationship with her best friend, Maddy, and how it contrasts with that of her Mom. I thought Justin and Emma’s connection and chemistry were spot on from start to finish. And I loved the cameos from characters from past books. So fun! Abby Jimenez totally rocked it again for me! If you love sweet romances with found family vibes and some honest mental health discussions, I think you’d love Just for the Summer, too! Have you read any books by Abby Jimenez? I did enjoy the storyline otherwise as Sadie and Seth figure out their magic and Sadie also figures out her relationships- both family and romantic. The small town setting was very magical and I loved the two dogs included in the story. I think had I known what to expect going into this one, I would have liked it more. This isn’t a lighthearted happy read. Here’s a small “Monday Tidbit” for some of you who don’t know this already. I am ( and have always been) a huge Royals buff. I’ve always felt a deep connection to the world of aristocrats and royal families (especially of old England and France), often daydreaming about roaming the halls of grand palaces in a past life. When I travelled there some years ago, it seemed so strange how familiar some things seemed. Almost like I was having bouts of déjà vu. I have always strongly felt like I was a part of this world in another life. I knew it, I understood it.
