“Writing is the closest thing we have to real magic. Writing is creating something out of nothing, is opening doors to other lands. Writing gives you power to shape your own world when the real one hurts too much.” I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel where hated the main character but loved the book, but here we are. To put it straight, June is not a likeable character. She’s cunning and a liar and knows how to work the system in her favour. ultimately; she does just that. She soon finds out that fame isn’t everything. After stealing a book her friend wrote before her unfortunate passing; she edits it and puts her name on it. At first it goes over well but then the rumours begin. The public begins to figure out the story was stolen from Athena. To cover up her lie, she digs herself deeper until there’s no where else to go. Even then June deceives everyone around her. I loved this novel. Despite no one being likeable the story was captivating. It read and flowed easily and I felt myself cringing reading what June was going to do next. This was a very different type of book for me. It’s not one I would have picked on my own but I am glad I read it. It’s very much a lyrical feel and it helped to bring the story to life. After becoming orphans following the death of their father, 3 sisters to go live with their uncle. Their uncle is rarely there and leaves almost no food in the house. They’re left to fend for themselves and look to each other for guidance. Kausar is the youngest and battles her gender identity, Aisha is the caregiver for her younger sister and Noreen the oldest struggles to be a mother to her sisters. Their bond is unbreakable. The poetry in this novel is so beautiful. It touches on grief so deeply you can’t help but feel the grief along with them. As a debut novel, I’ll be following this authors novels closely. R E V I E W “Our collective pain binds us together. We will prevail.” This was such an epic fast paced fantasy novel. I loved how much nostalgia I felt reading it, it really brought me back to my twilight loving days. I loved how strong Akira was and despite her upbringing she never wavered from her firm beliefs. Vampires, werewolves, witches and hybrids are under King Abel’s kingdom. They live in fear and follow his every move or fear death. Unexpectedly Akira falls in love with a hybrid Troy which is forbidden under her father’s ruling. As we dive deeper war begins truths and secrets are revealed and relationships begin to waver. This truly was such a fantastic novel. I loved how fast paced it was and I couldn’t put it down. I had to know everything. My review of “The Good Scout” by @alexis_n_arnold. I still can’t believe the roller coaster this book took me on. R E V I E W “Wasn’t friendship its own miracle, the finding of another person who made the entire lonely world seem somehow less lonely.” Ok wow, this one was a LONG one. It took me a while but I did finish. I’m probably in the minority here, although I really enjoyed the book it wasn’t a book that I’ll take with me everywhere. I did fall in love with the characters and enjoyed learning about them and I felt for Jude immensely. The abuse he went through was traumatic and I had to step away for a while because of the intensity. I did feel like the book could have been shorter and would have loved more dialogue. Sigh... Since this is my 2nd Dino Love novel, my mind wasn't blown. But that could also be because this was a pretty big letdown, compared to Wet Hot Allosaurus Summer. And trust me, I never thought I'd be comparing hot dino.... I'll leave that to the imagination. But for real, the author really failed me. Tons of spelling and grammar errors. Plus, I thought I was hallucinating when the author suddenly switched from numbered chapters to titles. Not to mention, there's really no plot at all, just one Dino partner after the other. Although this one didn’t hit me in the feels like some of her others I did enjoy the full circle story. Lost in the woods for years, six year old Alice is found by a small town. Julia one of the best child psychiatrists takes her in as her own. All she knows is she has to save her. The trauma she’s endured is nothing like she’s ever seen before. With the help of her sister and unlikely companions; everyone comes together to help Alice, the unlock the secrets in which kept her hidden for years. This story was really good, I do wish we could have learnt more about the “wild child” or feral children and dived into that more. R E V I E W “People said Ove saw the world in black and white. But she was colour. All the colour he had.” I find it hard to put this one into words. I liked this one and felt such warm feelings towards Ove. Given the way the character is written it took me a while to understand how he sees the world. But once I got there I wanted nothing less then happiness for him even if he didn’t necessarily want it for himself. There were some slow parts but overall it’s a fantastic book and was written beautifully. Ove keeps to himself. He has routines he follows everyday, doesn’t talk to many people unless he has to and first and foremost he wants to die. A man with a love that was taken too soon; finds himself wanting to leave this world as soon as possible. That is until neighbours move in next door and causes an uproar in his life. R E V I E W “The woman had a story to tell, even if the world wasn’t quite ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words. We were there.” It’s hard to imagine being in a war that was as brutal as the one in Vietnam. I think this novel correlates the feelings of war and survival so beautifully. You’re given a small glimmer of hope when the most horrific events are surrounding you. But sometimes hope can be dangerous. Especially when it’s taken from you without a warning. And you’re left picking up the pieces when there’s none left to see. I fell in love with Frankie the moment I read her name. Her passion was mesmerizing. I admire the responsibility she took on; one that a lot of people would never be able to handle. But she took it on and suffered while trying to heal. Healing is hard but healing when you’re wounded by the things you’ve witnessed takes a tole on your soul. It takes pieces of you that you’ll never get back. But new pieces can grow in the wake of healing. It takes time and love and effort but it can happen. In a time where woman were not given the recognition that was deserved some persevered. Some pushed forward. We need to learn from the past and do better now. R E V I E W “It occurred to him, for the first time, that just because you never thought about someone didn’t mean they weren’t inside you.” I’m kind of at a loss as to what to say about this one. I liked it, I mean I really liked it but I didn’t love it as much as I would have hoped. The characters were wonderful and I loved how they were written. I loved how close the sisters were and the troubles that followed them into adulthood. That being said although I normally love character driven stories; I would have liked a bit more story with this one. I found I couldn’t relate to characters and they didn’t pull at my heart as much as I would have liked. It’s a well written novel and I completely understand why this is recommended so often.
