🤔🧠REVIEW🧠🤔 “What if the universe isn’t for or against us? What if it’s not that serious?” The Age of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell is an insightful, informative, and accessible book exploring how and why we (over)think the way we do. The book is broken into just under a dozen essays, each focusing on a different theory or bias that impacts how we think, how we process, and how we understand. I know what you might be thinking…theories? That’s not for me. But if you’re familiar with Montell’s book Cultish, you know she has a way of making even the most complicated ideas easy to digest and understand. Through funny personal anecdotes and other examples from throughout history, even the most theory-averse will find something that will sit with them long after.   Through meticulous research, she seeks to break down WHY we think the way we do. From zero sum bias (which says that in order for someone to be winning, someone else has to be losing) or proportionality bias (trying to explain big events/feelings with equally big causes), she relates it all back to examples we can understand. One of the most impactful chapters for me centered around what stories get told and why; is it because it’s more interesting, glamorous or dramatic? How many stories have gone untold, and how do those untold stories impact how we understand ourselves and our own history?  Most chapters resonated with me, and I think there’s something for everyone here. For anyone who has ever thought, WHY do I think like that, WHY does my mind immediately tend to think in this way, how can I break that? Montell takes these ideas and talks about them through a lens of today, in a world full of comparison, immediacy, and short lived attention spans. Each one of the habits/bias she shares are innately human, and the way she frames them leaves room for exploration of how good or bad they might be. Montell doesn't exactly tell us what to do, but by giving the information behind our habits, we can start exploring that ourselves and taking more power over the habits that impact our thoughts. ❓Are you an overthinker? ❓

It was an honor getting to present on Autism at #APAAM24. The presentation went as well as I could have hoped. It was a packed room, there were several questions at the end, people stayed and came up to talk to us after it was over, and lots of positive feedback. I loved presenting on women with Autism and how the diagnosis is often missed, and people were interested in the topic which is a huge win. #success #grateful #psychiatry #autism #mentalHealth

With it being mental health week, I thought I would post some info about the gut-brain connection. 🧐Did you know your mental health affects your gut health (and vice versa)? 🧐Did you know you have two brains? 🧠 Yes, you’re THAT smart. 🤓 The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) controls almost all voluntary and involuntary activities within your body. For example, a voluntary action would be slicing your veggies, while an involuntary action would be blinking, breathing or falling in love. The involuntary actions carried out by your central nervous system are constantly at work taking care of you. Nice, right? Thank you, central nervous system! Now guess where your second brain lives. Your gut! Yes, it has a mind of it’s very own. Your gut’s “brain” is known as the enteric nervous system. This system is home to 100 million neurons within your intestinal wall. These cute little neurons transmit important information throughout your body. They also control digestion and send status updates to the brain, letting it know how things are going in your belly. Your two nervous systems have an intricate relationship that’s just now being explored by scientists through the field of neurogastroenterology (that’s a mouthful!). While the enteric nervous system initiates and sustains digestion on its own, signals from the brain, such as stress and anxiety, can have dramatic effects on how well it works. In addition, the brain receives chemical messages from the gut, which can affect your mood and emotions. In fact, the vast majority of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, sleep, anxiety, depression and more) is actually made in your gut, not your brain! When I began cold plunging a few years ago, I was struggling severely with depression and mood swings. I was trying anything to feel relief. When other things weren’t working, I’d go back to the cold water and start over. In May of this year, I made a couple huge realizations: First, I was severely over-medicated on my SSRI and had been for quite some time. I’ve been on an SSRI since I was 9 years old (when I was diagnosed with anxiety/OCD/Tourette’s), and somewhere along the 23 years of taking them I got to the point where I didn’t need them at the high-levels that I used to. But nobody helped me make that connection, so I just kept taking them. In May I began a slow, hyperbolic taper to lower my dose (this is not a recommendation for others, just my story). Second, I ran bloodwork through Blokes (link in my bio) only to find that I had testosterone and DHEA deficiencies and thyroid issues. I was clueless that these hormone imbalances could directly impact my mood and mental health. I began supplementing to get these levels back into optimal ranges. Within two weeks, I began feeling dramatically better. It almost seemed too good to be true, but it continued to improve week after week. It was like a weight lifted off my chest. But every so often, I still have a bad day. And instead of immediately going into “diagnosis mode,” I’ve been gently reminding myself that I can’t feel perfect all of the time. Some days are just harder than others. I share all this in hopes that someone else out there will realize it’s okay to have a bad day, even when you seem to be doing everything right. Speaking out now about losing both our Miss USA and Miss Teen USA: Through out this week I am very shocked that this is going on right now! I understand that mental health is importance and I respect Miss USA to step down. However, hearing Miss Teen USA now stepping down due to something terrible going on with the organization like this news is very unacceptable. As a reminder the Miss USA Organization is not only my Super Bowl of all pageants, but the organization is representation of women empowerment and about spreading advocacy around the world one step at a time. These ladies work really hard to make their dream come true to win the title and now it shatter just like that. In my opinion I think that the organization still need a lot of work to do as this is unacceptable that I am hearing all these bad things from it and losing two queens like this. This is also why I am so grateful that I decided to not do it this year and decided to compete for American Royal Beauties again. For I feel like I need to see better improvement from this. In the meantime, I am pushing pause on my desicion to compete Miss IL USA in 2025. I am not saying no..I just feel like with everything going on I need to see more better news than this. Also, I think this also God telling me after this year if I don’t win Nationals it might time for me to do another break where I can focus on getting that car again, or trying to give more attention on a full time job that I been trying for months, or that we can even save more money instead of using on pageants to do more vacations in 2025 since I do want to go on another Disney cruise next year. Remember your relationship with your body is so special. Pay attention to the mind-body connection. You matter! How you feel matters! You have one body so be careful and take care of your mental, emotional, and physical health. As athletes, a lot of our identities may be based around sports and fitness, but if & after we transition out of it (especially if it's injury-related), then we may lose a sense of ourselves. Keep healthy coping strategies that let you enjoy life in many ways, and have fresh experiences. Find a hobby or other passions that allow you to have fun on the side. Get plenty of rest, hydration and always take time to stretch and relax. Breathe easy! Follow the rules of your sport for safety and injury prevention, that way you can continue to enjoy your fitness and life! Wear your protective gear, take breaks and rest when you need it! Today marks TWO WEEKS since I was admitted, and there have been a lot of ups and downs over the last couple days. Sunday night was REALLY really rough. About an hour after dinner I started to develop severe abdominal pain that just continued to escalate and get worse. I ended up spending the majority of the night in excruciating pain, repeatedly vomiting, with really frequent watery bowel movements, and shivering so bad I had to have them crank up the heat in my room for several hours. I've had bowel obstructions in the past, and that's exactly what this felt like. Also, my labs on Monday were highly abnormal, white blood cell, inflammation markers, and lactic acid levels were all elevated, which can all be signs of going septic. Discharge plans were pretty much immediately taken off the table and they ordered a bunch of blood cultures, an X-ray, a CT, an Ultrasound, gave me lots of fluids, and kept rechecking my lactic acid levels regularly (which decreased).... But no real definitive answers from any of those test. Monday night and yesterday ended up being so MUCH better than the night before. I was actually able to get some quality sleep, which was a win. And the doctors decided that even though they normally just monitor patients with E.Coli, I'm me, so they decided to be cautious and treat it with antibiotics for the next three days (tomorrow/Thursday being the last day). Today my blood work has normalized close to my baseline, my pain has greatly improved, and my GI docs think it probably was some kind of acute partial bowel obstruction. Because there's been such a big improvement all my Teams (GI, Internal Medicine, and Infectious Disease) have started talking about transitioning me for discharge. Hopefully before the weekend. The feeling from all the doctors is that all the symptoms I was experiencing before coming to the hospital were caused by the CMV, which caused my Crohn's to flare, and the bleeding with my bowel movements to increase, and that the addition of E.Coli and potential partial bowel obstruction in the hospital clearly complicated things and drew out my hospital stay. Research has shown a strong link between diet and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. For example, a study published in the *American Journal of Psychiatry* found that a diet high in processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats was associated with an increased risk of depression. Conversely, diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins were linked to a lower risk of depression. Moreover, the gut-brain connection is gaining recognition as a significant factor in mental health. The gut microbiome, which is influenced by diet, produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, often referred to as the “feel-good” hormone. Imbalances in the gut microbiome due to poor diet choices can lead to disruptions in neurotransmitter production, contributing to mood disorders.
