I was in denial about my son’s autism for years. Honestly, I spent the first three and a half years of his life chasing down any other root cause for his delays and differences. Autism was some dark, scary hole that you can’t climb out of. That couldn’t be my son’s future. So, I spent a whole year getting him into numerous therapies, tests, and evaluations. And after all that, I had a ton of data… and an autistic son. In the moment, getting the diagnosis felt like a death sentence. This life I had dreamed up for my son was suddenly gone. This expert just told me he may never even be independent, much less have a family and find a fulfilling career. The weight of the words Autism Spectrum Disorder on that piece of paper felt like a physical vise around my throat. And even though I knew the diagnosis was coming, the pain was unbearable. I couldnt speak about it for days. All those hopes and dreams for my son were crushed, replaced with fears and unknowns. But the first few chapters of a story aren’t going to give you the whole plot. That would be a crappy book. So too, my son’s story was far from over. What was your experience seeking a diagnosis for your child? Were you in denial like me or did you embrace it?

Jordan’s first time swimming since his seizure disorder diagnosis. It’s under control with his meds, it’s not too deep, and worst case, I feel comfortable pulling him from the bottom of the pool if I have to. He just enjoys it too much and has to see it every day to deprive him.
