One of the great loves of my life. My middle one. ❤️❤️ I am so glad I listened to my spirit on how to raise him. Because he is doing Fantastic!! We put in the work early and consistently. We changed how we parented all our kids and DARED anyone to talk sh’t about it! Although our black children get misdiagnosed often, it wasn’t the case for us. We saw ‘it’ too. OMG - the stories we can tell! I get tired just thinking about navigating life with that dude! Before he was in kindergarten, we got him help. We didn’t care about ‘labels’ and what other people thought. @thatbassplayerjp and I prioritized teaching him how to be resilient, how to manage his self worth. We gave him the words to communicate and damn sure taught him how to stand up for himself. I have intellectually cussed a couple of teachers and principals out along the way. How he performed in school was secondary to his mental health and self worth. He was 18 when the official diagnosis went from ADHD to high functioning ASD (which we knew). But the official diagnosis gave him a greater awareness of himself. And he is doing his thing as a college student and 20 year old man. All the while being so damn adorable! To you black parents of neurodivergent high functioning kids, there is a lot of shit to navigate different from our white counterparts. But focus on your kid, get the education and support that you need, don’t try to beat or parent your kid out of whatever their diagnosis is. There are tools and techniques that work. Jon and I had to lay aside our pride, how we were raised, what people said, and focus on our child. That shit paid off! I’ve been at my job for over 15 years and I’ve met some amazing people along the way, both customers and co workers. I will say my favorite part is when people see the autism sticker on my name tag and start up a conversation. Several of my co workers have kids or family members who are on the spectrum. I learn so much from hearing their stories . This week I spoke with three amazing customers and learned about their journey on the spectrum. One particular conversation stood out the most. A customer asked how did I know Dom was autistic because she suspects her son might be. While you could see in her eyes a sense of sadness, you could all see a sense of relief knowing that someone understood her concerns. Working on a new and unique neurodivergent brain piece ♾️ 🧠 I have a ways to go with it, but really happy with how it is coming along! For those that do not know, a rainbow infinity symbol is the symbol for neurodiversity and is mainly associated with ADHD and ASD, but is used to represent other neurodivergent diagnoses as well. I believe it is the preferred symbol for Autism, as the traditional puzzle pieces symbol carries some negative connotations.
