DONATION DRIVE! I'm incredibly passionate about supporting individuals in the IDD population, so this donation drive is near and dear to my heart. Fundación Peldaños is a dormitory school in Chachagüí, Colombia for approximately 70 children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These students have minimal access to clothing, supplies, and toiletries. In 2014, I had the privilege of volunteering at a similar school in Cartago, Costa Rica. Despite living in a poverty-stricken area. students were happy and thankful for the opportunity to gain an education. When I recently learned of this school, I knew I had to support their mission. I connected with a gentleman from Los Osos who visits Fundación Peldaños monthly and brings clothing, shoes, and toiletry donations. (Drum roll please) The results are in: Streptococcus Pneumoniae Bacteria! 🦠 It took its sweet time in the Lab before we got any answers from the cultures they collected. I'm happy we can finally hit it where it hurts with the proper antibiotics. When we arrived yesterday at the ER Aerilyn was still febrile, dehydrated, her blood pressure was low, high heart rate, and having a ton of seizures. It was a royal mess! They had to load her with three rounds of IV fluids, two types of antibiotics, and emergency load of Ativan. (That's why she looks like a puff pastry) I haven't seen the ER jump to their feet to get her stable like they did in a very long time. I really appreciate BOTH Units between ER & PICU I can't stress enough how lucky we are to have such a great team rescuing our girl. Anytime Aerilyn's ENTIRE system gets slammed with the "Trifecta" illness+medication+adjustments expect recovery time to be in the double digits no less than 10days. I'm extremely relieved we can deal with the problem head on & expect improvement. The scariest is not knowing Why it's happening OR How to fix it.. Never a dull moment in Special Needing 😒 I want to thank everyone for your love and support but especially your prayers!! It's our lifeline!! NEW BLOG: Do you suffer from mum guilt as well? Motherhood is often described as one of life’s greatest joys, a journey filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. But for mothers of autistic children, it can also be a journey fraught with challenges, uncertainties, and overwhelming guilt. As a mother myself, I’ve experienced firsthand the weight of this guilt and the toll it can take on both parent and child. Mum guilt, as it’s commonly known, is a feeling of inadequacy and self-blame that many mothers experience, often exacerbated by societal pressures and unrealistic expectations. But for mothers of autistic children, mum guilt can be particularly insidious, casting a shadow over every decision, every interaction, and every moment spent with their child and out in public. One of the most damaging aspects of mum guilt is its tendency to drive a wedge between parent and child, creating distance where there should be connection, and eroding the foundation of trust and understanding that is essential for healthy parent-child relationships. This is especially true for mothers of autistic children, who may already feel isolated and overwhelmed by the unique challenges of raising a child with neurodevelopmental differences. In todays homeschooling lesson we were using 🍪 Literacy - he had to read the ingredients and instructions. 🍪 Identification - which ingredient from the page matched the ingredient in real life. 🍪 Maths - identifying which measurements were needed from either the measuring cup or measuring spoon. 🍪 He used all of his senses throughout the experience. Sight = to measure. Sound = to hear the oven timer go off. Taste = to eat the cookie. Touch = to mix the cookie dough Smell = smelling the sweetness of the chocolate. FIRST PAYCHECK ALERT!!!!! I was so excited to give my very first employee her first paycheck today. At @notredamedallas this has historically been a very big deal, we celebrate immensely every time a student is gainfully employed and gets their first paycheck - whether it’s for $5 or $500. Casey genuinely did not care literally at all about being paid for her time and effort. I was so excited and she was looking at me like “lady are you nuts, please hush i am very busy working!?” (See slide 2 for the genuine excitement of her working) This exchange centered me; it reminded me that life isn’t about money, it’s about feeling valued and important and needed. And Casey, you are so SO needed. Every time your shift is done I’m bummed, you are so helpful and capable and absolutely necessary to me and Happy Flour. Sprinkles finally got a new suit (well, 2 of them)!! I ordered these from the lovely @handipetsplus, who makes beautiful custom drag bags for special needs babies like Sprinkles. Sprinkles has been with me since December 18, 2022. I know many people think she should become a permanent part of my little family, but we just aren't the right fit for her. My 3 tabby boys do not like her - they all chase her, corner her, gang up on her, intimidate her, every single day. It is so stressful for her... she doesn't even fight back. She just hisses and screams as loud as she can while trying to escape. It isn't fair to her. She needs her own home. Sprinkles does gravitate toward the kittens, and she and Amelia actually play together as well, so a home with another cat or two who won't dominate her would work. Sprinkles is a challenging cat and is not for a first-time pet owner. It takes a while for anyone to earn her trust - she still grumbles and growls at me all the time. It's just who she is. She's going to make you work for it, and whoever is interested in adopting her is going to have to be willing to put in the effort and work. It will absolutely be a process... but there has to be someone out there who wants an adorable, sassy cat who loves to grumble and growl and hiss, who needs a grooming helmet on in order to trim nails or bathe, who loves to curl up in cozy beds and blankets and get head scritches, who thrives with a routine, and who needs her bladder and bowel expressed. There has to be someone... right???

Last night, my husband and I went on a rare #datenight . One of our other sons kindly watched Ian while we went out. We are @amctheatres #alist members and enjoy catching the #amcscreenunseen surprise films when we can. It is a nice way to escape reality for a while, relax without jumping up and down if Ian needs anything, and just kind of mentally checking out from #specialneedsparenting for a couple of hours - especially for me since I am the forever full time #caregiver . Don't for one second thing we didn't see the dark humor in our surprise movie being #ezra - a film about parenting a child on the spectrum. 🙃 HOWEVER, let me say that it was a very good film. The acting was believable overall, with @williamfitzgeraldactor doing an excellent job as Ezra. So many scenes resonated with us, as parents of a child with some similar traits. Not only will parents of children with #autism relate, but it will also be a good learning and empathy moment for those without.
