I took my First Step into The Grove yesterday, which the third First Step Communities campus for unhoused youth ages 18-24 🚶! I am so excited to be working closely with these residents for the next couple of weeks with a special project planned! I was also able to drop off some donations that went to an amazing community 👚. • This campus houses 50 residents, with 4 case managers on site to help connect these wonderful individuals with the resources they need. There is also on site mental health counseling once a week 🫂. With these tiny homes 🏠 , full access showers🚿 , a community room, clothing closet 👕and meals 🥪 on site, it is amazing to see support that FST has for these young adults! • With the goal of preparing these residents with a stable job, and assistance with permanent housing, @firststepcommunities is changing lives, one tiny home at a time. I can’t wait to let the secret out on what our collaboration has in store next! Eating Disorders Coalition Advocacy Day 2024. Glad to be back in person at Capitol Hill for the first time since covid! 💜 This nonprofit organization means so much to me. As I continue my recovery journey, it’s been especially important to me to help make a difference by participating in lobby day. This year advocates across the nation are met with their U.S. Representatives & Senators to ask them to co-sponsor the Kids Online Safety Act! (KOSA). The Kids Online Safety Act (H.R. 7891/S.1409) is a comprehensive social media platform accountability bill that seeks to address specific harms posed by platform algorithms. This bill will be addressing an ongoing problem with TikTok, instagram, Meta, etc. creators monetizing off of triggering content. Also how the algorithm exposes minors to this content without it being searched! Did you know, every 2.6 minutes, harmful content is advertised on TikTok? These are YOUTH targeted ads to maximize engagement & spending! There’s been a media-fueled rise in youth psychiatric conditions due to the harmful mental health content available & pushed on teens! This is not okay! We are pushing senators & state representatives to help turn this act to LAW. In addition we also asked for co sponsors on The Nutrition Care Act (H.R. 6961/S. 3010)-to fix a gap in Medicare Part B coverage, which excludes individuals with ED from receiving an essential component of eating disorders treatment - medical nutrition therapy. In recovery, continued nutrition appointments are crucial! But because of cost, not everyone can afford it. I commend my father Kevin Hurst for attending the EDC advocacy day since we heard of the organization back in 2014 during my residential stay at Avalon Hills in Utah. His passion, commitment & involvement means so much to me. He also has been a Pennsylvania team leader for quite a few years now. Our NHAND President, Dr. Michelle Haff, attended the DC Federal Legislative Initiative in Washington DC this weekend. Back in person after a 5 year hiatus, DC FLI drew naturopathic doctors, medical students, state association leaders, and staff of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians from all over the country. After a full day of training on Sunday, they held meetings with various legislative offices on Capitol Hill yesterday to advocate for the expansion of naturopathic medicine. Dr. Haff had the honor of meeting with office staff of three US Senators, including New Hampshire's Senator Maggie Hassan. Not a Cystic Fibrosis fact day. More of a Breath of Life Foundation “fact” day… After nine years, we still get the question, “what does the Breath of Life Foundation support?” Which is a GREAT question that we love to answer. Our mission is to fill the financial gaps of families living in or being seen in Wisconsin. But what are the “financial gaps” we’re talking about? When reflecting on her life as a CF Patient, Lauren Arkens made a list of every “ancillary cost” of having Cystic Fibrosis. That list included: - Medications - Medical Supplies - Medical equipment - Clinical and non-clinical - Copays - Insurance Premiums - Fuel to get to appointments - Lodging (occasionally) - High calorie / High fat foods (above and beyond the family grocery bill) - Gym membership, fitness equipment for the home or sports fees growing up (all ways to naturally do airway clearance…) - Utility bills (running fans, AC, April Aire systems, Blue Light Filters, VEST Therapy, Nebulizer equipment - all of that costs MORE than the usual household) Some of this stuff is standard. Everybody has bills… But people who have CF already have enough on their plate. So, we thought what if we created an organization that helped with ALL KINDS of ancillary costs associated with having CF? What if we could remove a VERY stressful aspect of their lives - FINANCES - so they could focus on living a “normal” life? A life focused on their families. Their health. A life focused on LIVING. With experiences. A life that looked just like everyone else’s who don’t have to spend hours doing airway clearance and taking a bunch of pills. A life that didn’t have to choose between a vacation to relax and recharge or paying your always increasing bills… That’d be cool. Right? Well. We did that. And we’re DOING that. Every single day. Every day we help PEOPLE fill the “financial gaps” of living a life with Cystic Fibrosis so that their life looks and feels just a little more “normal.” We want to find a way to help EVERY person in this state or who is seen in this state somehow.
