Requesting prayers for Two Moons ✨🙏🏼 Horse caretaking is not for the faint of heart. Our beautiful Two Moons, an Ojibwe Spirit Pony is facing some health challenges which began last July in the middle of a heat wave. Since then I have not missed a day of tending to her care, trying to look after her nutritional needs with supplements and making sure she got her medicine and all the love and scratches she wanted and needed. Recently her health issues escalated and as a result I’ve moved her to Tottenham to a horse rehabilitation / recovery centre where I know she’ll get the best care possible. As the native pony breed is an endangered species with less than 300 ponies now, it feels like a responsibility too big for one person to care for Two Moons, she deserves the very best care, including the love of her Anishinaabe community 💛 Today she was seen by her veterinary care team for ultrasound and bloodwork, I’m hopeful that we will finally get some definitive answers to her health issues and set her on a long path of health and well-being. Two Moons is only 7 years old so it’s quite heartbreaking to have seen her health decline so early and rapidly. In the coming days I will be setting up a go fund me for those who have expressed interest in wanting to contribute to Two Moons healing journey and time in the rehab centre. These days feel like a constant reboot — just an afternoon offers enough data to present a new hypothesis and start again. But at least now I have a baseline that feels less foreign; my body now holds home in a way it never could before surgery, now almost four years ago.” … and so beginneth the newest episode of my podcast / substack, now live! I started writing this after midnight on my birthday, in the wee hours, when I got home in an outfit that I might have costumed an artist in if I was doing design on a show… but then realized I only located myself after undressing. Sitting in my favorite chair in my relief-tank-top I took a few self-portraits to mark this moment, this boyhood birthday, and soon the stories and reflections started coming. Then of course they got woven with the threads the morning picked up - a conversation with my (g)uncle David, thinking about Sadie Barnett’s (New) Eagle Creek Saloon that I needed like succor when Candystore and I went through its portal at The Kitchen in 2022, reflecting on where play and possibility and expression find right relationship to anti-capitalism… and where a sort of punishing austerity takes over. There’s a lot here, of me and of maybe you, too – it’s an invitation to think about belonging and home – and your body, and relationships, and therefore, always – about getting from Survival to Sanctuary. Let's break down the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding disability. No one owes you a disclosure of their disabilities. Whether visible or hidden, physical or cognitive, everyone deserves respect, understanding, and accommodation without judgment or scrutiny. Moreover, it's crucial to recognise that disabilities come in many forms, including those that may not be immediately apparent. Communication barriers, for example, should never be equated with a lack of intelligence or capability. Every individual has their own strengths, talents, and perspectives to offer, regardless of how they communicate or express themselves. Empowerment begins with empathy and understanding. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but one of the things I want to try and build is a strong sense of community within Kentish Town and our business (customers and staff alike). At @carrotsanddaikon, one of our greatest successes was creating a sense of community and belonging, which I value even more now since coming back from my travels away. Because often or not community is overlooked and forgotten amid our busy work and home lives. Even simple actions, like chatting with your cashier or engaging with others waiting in line to order, can help improve our moods and overall daily life greatly. Because ultimately, what we all crave is that sense of community in our lives—people we can trust and who we can communicate with regularly to support one another. This is something we often deeply desire but often hesitate to express as it may seem like we haven’t got our stuff together. …. the fog lifts a sweet soul emerges behind the curtain the child was here all along waiting to be nurtured patiently preparing to bloom… My work is cute and feminine, yet I am continuously inspired by its thoughtfulness, perhaps an unexpected sense of boldness. This piece was one of the first I made in this series, each exploring an emotion or a memory.
