Happy Outdoor Classroom Day! 🌞🌲 #TBT to when the Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre became one of the first carbon-negative islands in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This outdoor education centre features the largest renewable energy system ever installed at a state school site, boasting a 99kW off-grid power system with 258 solar panels, 36 lithium phosphate batteries, a wind turbine, and an emergency backup generator. 💚 Principal Andrew Gill highlights that the solar panel and battery system generates and stores enough electricity to power 40 households, serving as a hands-on educational tool for students to learn about renewable energy. "The students who visit us can learn about state-of-the-art renewable energy systems and experience a truly sustainable and off-grid lifestyle during their stay." 💚💛 Where are they now? 💛💚 Meet Eric, a former TSHS graduate who was awarded Dux of 2020. Currently, Eric is a Casual Undergraduate Geologist with BHP and is in his fourth year of studying a Bachelor of Science with an Extended Major in Earth Science at UQ. After graduating high school, Eric was considering a career in Law, though soon realised it wasn't the right fit after a semester of study. He made the switch to science, combining his interests in the outdoors and practical, interesting work. Eric is passionate about geology because it allows him to do scientific work in places he never would have gone before, such as Heron Island. His goal is to be a geologist making a positive impact on the future of Australia's resource industry. Celebrating National Volunteer Week! Today, we're thrilled to spotlight Zella Njuhovic, a dedicated Finance, Procurement and Facilities Senior Program Officer who joined the Community Recovery Ready Reserve back in 2013. The Community Recovery Ready Reserve workforce is a Queensland Government flagship initiative that supports vulnerable people and communities in times of need. Ready Reserves are public service volunteers who work away from their regular roles to assist affected communities following a disaster or emergency event. We encourage our non-school-based employees to register and volunteer to support fellow Queenslanders when disaster strikes. When asked about her motivation for volunteering, Zella simply stated, "It's all about giving back." TSHS Families 💚💛 "Well, Toogoolawah High did it again! Not one trophy this time, but THREE! What a great night we had at Battle of the Bands at Laidley State High. For more photos, see our latest Facebook Post. The evening started with our high energy Rock Band playing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” who impressed the judge so much they won the trophy for best Rock Band. The next part of the night was all about the extension element of our cluster Instrumental Music which is our Chamber Ensemble program featuring Yuna in the Flute Trio and Ash in the Clarinet Quintet playing some really high level music. That brought us on to the Stage Band section. Our band really represented with some high accuracy performance and irrepressible grooves from our Stage Band. Our Concert Band brought a sense of awe, confidence and unlimited depth to our two songs, “Stanley River Overture” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. We finished the evening with a Combined Concert Band with Laidley and Lockyer performing “The Muppet Show” and “Skyfall”. A big thank you to Mrs. Logan at Laidley for organizing this event and the pizza we had for dinner. Thank You to Miss Graham for organizing all our paperwork and buses and all the ensemble preparation behind the scenes and for playing with us on the night. Thank you to our students for representing so very well. Thank you to Miss Vicki for taking footage and photos of the band and not just for this time. 💚💛 Where are they now? 💛💚 In the latest instalment of our "Where Are They Now?" series, we're proud to spotlight William Stafford. William attended Toogoolawah State High School in 2018 and graduated in 2021. Since his graduation, William has completed rigorous training to become a Combat Engineer in the Australian Defence Force. His aspiration to serve in the Defence Force began at a young age, inspired by his father's service. After completing school, William gained valuable life skills by working various jobs before applying for the Defence Force. This role requires not only physical resilience but also sharp problem-solving skills, as Combat Engineers are tasked with constructing and demolishing obstacles to support military operations. Their role can also involve operating heavy machinery/vehicles and detecting and disarming explosive devices. He is now serving as a Combat Engineer and is currently stationed in Holsworthy, Sydney. William's dedication and hard work have paid off, and his achievement marks an inspiring chapter in his career. Congratulations, William, on your impressive achievement! Sport spotlight on Year 8 student, Lachlan 🌊 Earlier in April Lachlan competed at the Australian Surf Life Saving Youth Championships at Maroochydore. Lachlan achieved the following results. 🔹 U14 board rescue team - made it to the top 10 finalists and came 2nd in Australia. 🔹 U14 male board relay team - 11th in the final (started with 69 teams). 🔹 U14 Cameron relay team - 18th in the final (started with 55 teams). 🔹 U14 ironman - Lachlan made the semi-finals placing top 46 out of 132 competitors. 🔹 U14 surf race - Lachlan made the semi-finals and just missed out on reaching the final by one place! Congratulations Lachlan on your efforts and dedication to your sport. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS ~ A reminder for parents and carers to make your bookings via Compass. Parents and caregivers have the opportunity to engage in interviews with their child’s curriculum teachers on Wednesday 8 May. It is recommended that the child attends the parent-teacher interview where possible. Each 10 minute interview will be a chance to discuss your child’s progress in specific subjects and learn about upcoming assessment. On 8 May, school will finish at 1:05pm (end of period 3). Interviews can be booked between 2:00pm and 5:20pm (finishing at 5:30pm).
