How many teams, projects and organisations have a ‘type’? People with a certain set of skills, attributes and experience that they have decided over time is ‘the right set’? Strikingly similar to the skill set of the leader/hiring manager of course. And to a point, there’s some sense in a bit of ‘profiling’. We do that naturally and logically when we decide we need a new team member and start writing job descriptions and adverts. It is logical to profile what good looks like in terms of qualifications, skills and experience level. But it’s easy to take it too far. If we stick religiously to this tried and tested profile, we will miss out on the possibility of more. Of better. If we always do what we’ve always done, we will always get what we’ve always got, right? Hiring the less obvious candidates can feel like a huge risk. We can come under scrutiny from those above us (and our teams), we can create a lot of work for ourselves if it doesn’t work out, and a lot of work for ourselves if it does! But that risk, is innovation. It represents change, continuous improvement, aspiration and challenge. Keeping an open mind about what good could look like, and all the different ways to do this job lights up a brighter future. So think about what you really need at a base level. Is that qualification really necessary? How many years experience will make a difference, and can you plug the gap with training? Bringing in someone with a different personality type to you and your team will help you think more deeply and see problems from a different perspective.
