Like many, I once hesitated to discuss mental health openly. The topic was shrouded in taboo, burdened by misconceptions, and marred by societal stigmatization. Terms like βattention-seekingβ or βplaying victimβ lurked in the shadows, ready to silence those who dared to speak up. My own battle with clinical depression began at the tender age of 16. In those early days, mental health was still a realm of mystery, its complexities often misunderstood. I navigated through a maze of antidepressants and therapy sessions, desperately seeking solace amidst the turmoil raging within my mind and emotions. Panic attacks, anxiety spiralsβthe rollercoaster of highs and lows seemed endless. Yet, amidst the chaos, I faced an additional challenge: cultural perceptions. In the African context, mental health concerns were often intertwined with notions of βmadnessβ and viewed through a lens of shame. Fearing judgment and ostracization, I made the painful decision to abandon my medications, hoping to blend into the illusion of normalcy embraced by my teenage peers. But the facade crumbled. With each passing day, the episodes grew more intense, their grip tightening around my soul. It was a stark reminder that denial only fueled the flames of suffering. Today, as I stand before you, I embrace my truth without reservation. I am a survivorβa testament to the power of resilience and the importance of destigmatizing mental health conversations. My journey has taught me that vulnerability is not weakness; it is the foundation upon which healing begins. So, as we honor Mental Health Month, let us pledge to shatter the barriers of silence and stigma. Okay, so I wasn't like this at all. Ten months ago, I hit the rock bottom of my life till date. And then, it struck me that there were so many things I needed to fix within myself. Things were falling apart in domino effect - career, health, emotions, finances, friends and what not. And then it was when I realized that I had to accept and fight back. So I did. I worked on myself to a point that I became accountable, communicative, consistent, clear with my intentions and goals, started prioritizing my health and my time, picked up travelling as a hobby, fixed my career, worked so much on my calm, peace, emotional intelligence, accepting my own mistakes and not repeating them and maintaining healthy boundaries, made my circle small and realised my WORTH. I started talking less and observing more, fixed my insecurities, made sure that my words and my actions align. I MET MY ORIGINAL AUTHENTIC SELF. FINALLY. And now when I compare myself to what I was and what I've become - I can be nothing but proud of everything I am at present. And there's still so much to do. But in the end, its only me who knows about the tears, breakdowns, sleepless nights, numbness, fighting my inner demons and what not to become THIS VERSION of ME. It now makes sense why everything had to happen a certain way and why I did not give up. YES, I BECAME A WOMAN :) Also, thankyou to all those who stayed and didn't give up on me.
