2-3 months behind, but a year ahead. Hi, I am insane. I can only think of what we haven’t finished for this school year even though we are a grade level ahead of what I can report to the school anyway. I love homeschooling. I love being a mother. And I constantly fail and question whether I’m doing okay at any of it. I imagine more mothers feel like this and we don’t talk about it because mom shaming is real - and it sucks. Mamas, it’s okay to be living in your dream come true AND it’s also okay to admit that it’s overwhelming, overstimulating, and you need more breaks than you get. Today as Persephone came off the boob from our failed nap attempt, Theo came in and we all sang together. They sing Queen’s “mama ooo o ooo,” over and over with the made up lyrics, “I love you so much, I sometimes wish we could live forever, together.” I made these up to replace the real lyrics that I don’t want to hear my kids saying because genius as that song is, it’s dark. So we all sang together. Theo does a thing where he acts like he knows what I’m about to say and tries to jinx whole sentences… but he really just shadows ends of words as he senses what I’m saying. I hate this - it drives me insane - but it also makes me laugh uncontrollably every time. I gave in. I laughed so hard I cried as I tried to snapshot the memory. My children’s faces are always changing. Their childhood feels like sand falling through my fingers. As often as I can I try to remember to give in to the moment and just be in joy with them. Beyond all the chores and shoulds, I am the manager of their young years. Holding them in their youth is the most important thing. I have lost myself in motherhood. But it turns out, I’m not lost at all. Our children are the future. There is no more meaningful investment. What a gift it is to learn the art of selfless surrender into the greatest investment of a lifetime. Keep doing your best Mamas. You are so important.🌻

Hey friends! 🌸 As coordinators of The Village, Jenn and I (Eva) would like to introduce ourselves! If you would asked either of us at any point in our lives if we planned on homeschooling, we would have given you a resounding helllll no 😂 BUT as life would have it, we got what you would call a curve ball. The year our oldest would have started jk, the pandemic closed our schools and instead of putting our kids through the open/closed roller coaster of the system, we began our homeschooling journey. And what do ya know? We loved it! That first year, our homeschool group consisted of just our two cute little families, and then the next year we had another two moms join us, and then this last year another four! This coming fall looks to be our biggest expansion yet and we couldn’t be more excited. With some trial and error, patience, a lot of learning along the way, and even more passion, we’ve established what we believe is a beautiful low-stress structure of support, comradeship, and fun! Our kids have the space and time to develop life long relationships and have the privilege of having other talented parents demonstrate their skills and passions. In this space where we are learning together always, we’ve found that this adventure we call homeschooling is so much more than just education, but a celebration of living life together. I can’t recommend homeschooling enough for parents of kids with ADHD. There are so many struggles that kids have with public school standards. Even kids without ADHD. Add in the need for constant movement, difficulties following directions, impulsivity, struggles focusing, and of course they will be labeled the troubled kid in class. Homeschooling is the perfect way to cater your child’s education to exactly meet their needs, without making them feel like a failure. Instead you can harness their hyper focus and show them that they are brilliant and can thrive with their interests. The documentary “The Disruptors” helped me better understand kids with ADHD. I can’t believe we’ve nearly finished Joy’s first school year 📚 She has a love for learning, a quick mind, and a very good memory. I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep up with it in the years to come, but for now I’m safe 🤣 I’m looking forward to teaching her to read properly over the next school year, as I know she’ll be so excited once she clicks that there is a whole new world to books that she hasn’t quite discovered yet ✨ She now knows her alphabet, the sounds of each letter, and how to write each, simple addition & subtraction, and reading 2-3 letter words. Her memory has retained a whole lot of information. 👌🏻 She’s thoroughly enjoyed going to a local homeschooling co-op each week as well, where she does science, dance, and art classes. We started a little co-op community that has grown! Every other Friday about 30 kids (mostly 10 and up) gather at a church space that we rent for 4 hours. Kaz reserved the kitchen for some cookie making with his friends. It was baking & silly games & capture the flag & whatever else they got up to sort-of-day! But, making cookies with 6 was exhausting! I was sweating! 🤣 I don’t miss managing a classroom. Nope. We’re coming up to the end of our homeschooling year and while of course we sometimes have our more challenging days, overall it has been such a joy!! I’m so thankful to be learning alongside my kids in this way and to see their growth over the past year has been so encouraging! I got a few homeschooling questions the other day and wanted to share more about what we’ve been doing. For Augustine’s curriculum we did @amblesideonline Year 1 which has been truly wonderful. For Language Arts and Math we’ve been doing @thegoodandthebeautiful which has been amazing and so fun- we’ve been using their curriculum since Year O/K and Corinna has been doing their Preschool work. Augustine is doing Language Arts year 2 and just started Math year 3. Even as math has become more challenging, he still says it’s his favorite. I especially love how the LA curriculum includes poetry and artist study, and it has given Augustine great practice with all the “fun” English spelling rules. Our favorite products are the Booster Cards which would even be a fun way to learn different letter sound combos over the summer. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments. Book completed! A very happy ‘author’ celebrating the completion of his book today. We finished working through the story writing and book making module and the end of the Orange Learning Language Arts through Literature text book. While it was not a requirement in the textbook we added in some basic keyboard skills and typing. Opening a new word document and editing.
