Sometimes it’s easier to say what your child won’t do rather than what they will do… 🔑 Key thing to remember when it comes to sensory processing is that they are avoiding things because it doesn’t register as safe (based on incoming sensory info) OR they haven’t figured out how to move or respond in an action that feels safe to their body (based on motor output /movement coordination ability). For example- a child may have very selective eating because the incoming sensory information from the food textures, smells and tastes are too much. This overwhelms the system and they avoid eating except for very specific safe and predictable foods. OR A child may refuse to play on a playground because they cannot figure out how to move through it or on it. It seems like a monumental task to coordinate their body and maybe their brain can’t figure out a motor plan to even begin to attempt it. Pressuring them or diminishing their fears makes it worse and they flat out refuse or avoid altogether. These are just two examples among a myriad of possibilities. Understanding the sensory system and identifying your child’s unique signature can be life changing. For you and for them.
