Now that you have thought about the question, did your answer include: my friend will stand up for me when I am present but more importantly when I am not around. My friends support me, make me laugh, are honest and show up when I ask them. Describing what is a good friend is based on our own values but also with a little added reflection. Do you treat your friends how you want to be treated? Are you kind, empathetic and listen without offering a solution? There are so many pieces to build and create lifelong friendships. As a parent, I would have this conversation with my teen and we would have it more than once. It is something to reexamine and come back to as your teen evaluates their friendships, learn from their friendship mishaps and find people who will be their lifelong friend. It may be tough to initiate the conversation but our book, One Friend? Two Friends? Bad Friend? Good Friend? is a great way to introduce the topic and to talk about friendship.
