Sometimes you know something; but it isn't until you hear it talked about a certain way that it really clicks for you. I know A LOT of coping mechanisms. I've read books talked with people, watched videos gone to therapy. I know a lot that work for me, a lot that don't, and a lot I haven't tried yet. I have anxiety about...well...pretty much everything so I'm constantly working through different ways to cope. And the things that I know is that coping skills do not replace whatever you need to do that is causing the anxiety. I know that. But for so long that is how I have been using them. I get anxious, I do something that makes me less anxious, and then ignore whatever was making me anxious until I can't then the cycle starts over again. In one of my therapy sessions last week we were talking about how situations can affect our thoughts, emotions, and actions and the therapist just made a quick comment of how we use our coping skills to understand/process whatever and then move on. And for some reason that's when it clicked and I realized that wasn't what I had been doing and why not much was getting better. What is the outcome of a persons successfully moving through the Emotional Experiencing work? It's about finally coming to that 'A-ha!' moment of understanding — understanding where, why and how a negative, trauma-based emotion began — and, because of this awareness, being able to choose and implement a better, more preferred way of being. Clients are able to forge a deeper relationship with their original emotion, in a felt sense, and subsequently take that original emotion and represent it externally (with art/expressive therapy) to develop a different perspective around it that is conducive to changing it. If direct or indirect emotional or physical rejection were a theme during your childhood, then it can feel deeply hurtful to be on the receiving end of perceived rejection from your children - the people you have worked the very hardest to be there for. So when they refuse to do what you ask, they are rude, their words seem disrespectful, they don’t listen, they ignore you and it seems as though their words or actions are designed to challenge you... ...it can bring up all of the helplessness of your past - a time that you had no power to change things. When you feel like this, there are three things you can do: ➡️ bring in your inner parent to reassure you that you are no longer alone in feeling this way - she is with you and feeling it with you ➡️ allow yourself to feel and therefore release these old, stuck feelings of powerlessness that have been stored in your body from a time that you were too young to process them properly, as your inner parent creates a safe space for you to do so ➡️ get your inner parent to remind you that you are no longer a powerless child, emotionally and physically dependent on your parents but an adult who is safe, loved and has resources to fall back upon in order to change the status quo Validating the part of you that feels helpless eases the pain. No longer feeling so alone starts to shift your confidence. Reframing the reality of the situation allows you to see that you are actually in charge, even though it might feel like the opposite is true. And from this place you remember that your immense capacity for love hasn’t been permanently damaged. It’s what got you through the first time, and it’s what’s going to get you through again. (Understand how your childhood is affecting your present by acknowledging and unpacking unconscious wounds whilst honouring the strengths that got you through. When you heal your inner child, and she is no longer in the driving seat of your life, it is no longer so challenging to show up as the conscious mama and connected partner that you want to be.
