Did you know that ANTIBIOTICS are linked to an increase in anxiety and depression??? You can drop all the stress you feel. Just let go. Letting go = allowing. Suppressing = holding on. Have you ever struggled with anxiety? Not nice is it 😔 How can it make you feel? For me it was worrying before going out somewhere, I remember going to the cinema with my older children and thinking the cinema was going to fall down/have a bomb etc and checking out the fire escapes! I also didn’t feel hungry, fast heart rate, cold & clammy, I wasn’t sleeping well, was restless and struggled to concentrate. I’m sure there were many more but these were just some. I was going through a tough time in my life and everything just crept up on me. I went to see the Dr and he gave me some anti depressants, I didn’t take them for long as they didn’t really work for me, although they do for many people (and definitely go with advice from your GP). I decided I needed to try and work out what was behind my anxiety, and then work out little things I could do each day that cumulatively started to make that change. It took a whole, probably a year or more to fully feel back to being me. But I got there. Talking to my friends was amazing (I am lucky as had some very good and wonderful friends to be there for me). Doing some mindfulness (although I didn’t know it was called this at the time!), exercising, learning and developing at work, going out with friends and talking my children out to different places. Slowly but surely I built these things up and my confidence grew, I grew and somewhere along the way my anxiety got less and less. I still have little moments but they are few now. you know it’s not the same as it was. I am still obsessed with this song, “as it was,” by a gentleman named Harry Styles. But if I saw him on the street I wouldn’t recognize him. What’s interesting about this point in my life and even in this song is that I’m in a different space. Even something as simple as not knowing who the major pop stars are shows me time is passing. Me not caring about who said pop stars are is even more telling - just appreciating what I like and leaving the rest. I’m 36 so I’m not young but also not old so it’s a strange window of nostalgia to look back on - childhood, teenage years, my 20s - and hopefully about a future that is kind of scary. I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary this week and mulling over mortgages smh and sometimes I still feel like I’m never ready, like I’m reaching for familiarity, for the way as it was. May is mental health awareness month. Many mental health patients are often ignored or called "crazy" due to the lack of right treatment, education and surrounding stigma. We need to step up and help these patients. They are coming to us for help, guidance and most of all...healing. Living/struggling with mental illness does NOT mean anyone is crazy. Mental/emotional health is part of us. The best thing to do is not to judge (or dr*g) the patient. And three they signal to my brain that work is over or the day is over. It’s big part of my separating my day and knowing home is my comfy safe space. This is something I have been trying to remind myself, I am someone who tends to over explain everything, especially if it's something I am saying no to, it's part of my anxiety; I am realising that I get my validation from others not through myself and what I really want to learn is that I don't need to explain why I don't want to do something, I can just say no and save the energy. Often when we are in the throes of depression or in a stuck state of anxiety our nervous system continues to seek out dangers in an attempt to keep us safe. This loop that our brain creates can be really difficult to step out of, and unlike a light switch we can’t just turn it off and on. Mindfulness practices, like leaning into and appreciating small moments can help us to “retrain” the brain to detect safety. When we feel safe and secure, we are much more likely to experience pleasurable feelings and we are much more likely to make good and grounded choices for ourselves.
