How are you feeling right now? I'm not doing so well.... I've felt myself dipping for some time and thought I was on top of it. But this week I have felt worse! I'm feeling so low that for the first time in a long time, I don't want to celebrate my birthday next week. I just want to cancel my BBQ, not bother booking any meals with the kids, just not even think about it. Ok.... So why am I feeling like this? Well firstly, I do live with depression. I have done most of my life, both medicated & un-medicated.... Secondly, I am my worst enemy when it comes to living a stress free life. I always pile the stress on, but the older I get the less I can handle it. Next, I've not been looking after myself. Emotionally, physically, mentally .... I have done things that I know destroy my happiness.... Self sabotage has always been my thing! Too much social media, relationships that are toxic, procrastinating at work, not eating properly, lazing around too much.... The list continues! And lastly, I have not tried to use my toolkit to pull myself out of this funk. I've let myself slip ... Knowingly ... Turning a blind eye .... What am I going to do now then? ๐ค Wallow a bit more until I wake up one morning and decide to change my mindset, or actively start today? I've been 'wallowing' for a long time... Tonight for May Mental Health Month we came together as a community to hear Drew Robinson former Major League Baseball playerโs story of mental health, surviving a suicide attempt, hope, recovery and resiliency. And I related to a lot of what he said. Beating yourself up ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ believing youโre a fraud and fooling everyone ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ faking it so that everyone thinks youโre okay ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ. What has helped me is examining my critical voice, cultivating self love in my decades of work with @thebodypositive , going to therapy, journaling, my family, friends and of course working in mental health. Drew said that what made a difference for him was being authentic about his struggle and what he was experiencing and I felt my whole body take a releasing breath. He named something that I think about and struggle with a lot, the power of negative self talk. I havenโt been close to suicide in my personal life but definitely those who I work with. That full body breath though? That happens when you hear someone say something that you feel and you feel less alone. Thatโs why talking about mental health matters. Talk. Breathe. As part of our โYou Belong Curriculumโ, last week some our students were able to share their differences in holidays, such as Afghanistan and Turkish holidays. In the conversation our students realized that Turkey has a holiday similar to Dia de Los Ninos, which allowed them to connect with our students from Mexico. They all bonded over the Dia de Los Ninos commonality. Was supposed to be gardening, spent the morning watching this little one break out of the cocoon - itโs now drying off the little wings to be ready to soar off into the world!! And itโs yellow! Itโs a significant thing for me. After my dad died I really had a hard time without him, and suddenly whenever I had to make big decisions or there was something of monument happening a yellow butterfly would show up. It always felt like that was my dad showing me he was still there, and still is. It was amazing to get to see this life event, and be reminded of my dad, AND get a little lesson that works for me in my life right now. Sometimes itโs ok to cocoon yourself while you work on what works best in life for you, and when youโre ready you just bust out and shake it all off and fly the heck off into the beautiful world, happy and free.
