My new poly tunnel door made by my clever hubby. He also lined some more raised beds for me and put chicken wire around the chicken pen. Hoping to create a better deterrent for Mr Rat. I spent more time than I would have liked today watering. Potted on some herbs, cleared another bed of the dreaded bindweed then planted out some more cabbages interspersed with marigolds and lots of strulch. Still emptying the slug pubs. They have been full most days. Hopefully it’s reduced their numbers somewhat! Next week it’s time to put the peppers and tomatoes in their final planting space. 🍅 After taking lots of care to germinate various tomato seeds, and raise them in the comfort of a sunny bedroom window, then worry about them when they are taken to the greenhouse (rushing every morning to make sure they’ve survived the night), then potting on to make sure they get fresh compost and don’t get potbound 🫣 we always get a big bunch of random seedlings growing in the homemade compost, obviously growing from a composted tomato 🤣 . RADISHES 🌿 I think Radishes are probably one of my favourite things to grow for 3 reasons. First, they’re incredibly fast growing. Second, they take up next to no space. And third, because my youngest associates them with Peter Rabbit and believes that by planting radishes, Peter Rabbit and his friends will visit our garden when we aren’t looking 🥹 she’s so invested I actually let our dog nibble a few and she believes it’s Peter rabbits nibbles 🐰 One of the best things for me since starting this journey was how much more time the kids spend with me, in the garden, planting, potting, weeding. It’s so nice to see them off their nintendos and outside. As I’m fortunate enough to have all of the school holidays off work, I remember last summer holidays myself and the kids having breakfast every single morning together outside, even when it wasn’t the warmest. As we wanted to check the plants, watch the birds in the bird bath and just talk to eachother 🤍 I’m counting the days until we can do that again. Summer now gives me so much to look forward to and makes me realise how truly blessed I am 🙏🏼 Do your kids help in the garden? What’s their favourite thing to do?

We finally visited our raised bed at the community garden, after weeks of not getting there. We planned to check on our asparagus and weed too. However, weeding proved difficult as a local cat decided to plonk itself where we were working and have its tummy tickled. 🐈 We did manage to take a great crop from our asparagus. We have never seen them so big before and (whilst four years has been a long time to wait in order to harvest them having grown them from a tiny seed) the harvest has made our day! One of my favourite perennials in the veg garden… Egyptian Walking Onions. They send up a cluster of bulbs where a flower head would normally be and the weight of the bulbs flops them over allowing them to “walk” All of the plant is edible, but the onions themselves are tiny so I prefer to eat the stems as a very easy spring onion substitute. The ultimate allotment tool top 3 ✨ Over the years, I’ve been trying to narrow down my allotment tool top 3 and if you told me when I started these would be my most used, I probably would have laughed at you whilst boldly carrying my fork and spade. 1. A hoe. Doesn’t have to be a fancy hoe, and they come in many shapes but a trusty hoe. Hoeing the soil to get rid of the weeds before they properly root is a godsend. It takes me 10 minutes a week to do “all the gaps” and if your hoe is sharp enough, it will break up some of the surface soil clumps too without damaging the soil structure underneath. I sow my plants with wide enough gaps to hoe inbetween too. Mine is a Wolf Garten interchangeable tool hoe, so it gets plenty of use with various lengths of pole and other tools too. 2. My hori hori knife. There’s not a lot I don’t do without this knife. The brand doesn’t really matter, but having one straight edge and one serrated edge makes all the difference. It’s SHARP, anywhere off the allotment site, I’d be arrested for carrying it. I plant with it, weed with it, make lines with it, chop stalks with it; you name it, I use it. 3. My secateurs. I’m a firm believer you need a strong, sharp pair of secateurs for life. In the gardening business world, Felcos are the top dog. It’s a worthy investment that will last you for many years if you look after them and clean them regularly…… which I need to get better at to say the least. I use an olive oil spray and wipe mine often to prevent spreading disease but they can be easily taken apart for cleaning too. All of my harvests above ground are taken with these secateurs as well as cutting flowers and sometimes canes too! A sharp pair go far. Also getting a shout out as a wild card is my bulb planter, which I use for planting no dig potatoes. Love a wild idea which really works! THIS DOG! You wouldn’t believe how much more comfortable and happy she is since moving. She barely used her toys, never played outside, never played fetch. The list goes on! We started to think she had been put in the wrong body and was secretly a snoozy cat haha! Flash forward to the new house, she has a garden now and lots more space. The landing is now a doggy’s dream bed area and she’s constantly face first in her toy basket! She plays on the landing and has zoomies downstairs every day. She’s becoming much more independent and even though we are sat in the living room watching something (my back has gone I’m in absolute agony. Some of the worst pain I have experienced and i don’t know what’s caused it, hoping a few more rest days will help - not feeling optimistic though! Worst timing I just want to be getting my allotment area ready! I have the help of some very good people so I’m well cared for and so are my plants!) she is outside sunbathing on her own. She’s a very anxious dog, we are with her 24 hours a day and she was born in covid so she’s very wary in public. I’m so happy she’s happy though!
