It feels so good to be filling the allotment up with all the plant babies 🌱 So far, from seed, I have planted out 🌱mangetout, broad beans, onions, Barlotti beans, French climbing beans, purple cauliflowers, squashkin, Turks turban squash, carrots, parsnips, cucumbers and a luffa 🌻Calendaulas, Ammi, sweet peas, Californian poppies and nasturtiums There’s a few more seedlings in the greenhouse at home, cosmos, sunflowers, tomatoes, summer psb, and spares of some of the above. I’m actually pleased it’s due to rain, as it will help to settle the plant babies into their new positions. Who doesn’t love an allium!? 🐝 💜 These wonderful bulbs come in a variety of colours, and are brilliant for bringing height into the garden whilst other plants are emerging. They can last well into the late summer and autumn as a dried seed head too. Once you allium flowers are out, the leaves may look tatty so you can cut the foliage back. The leaves often attract the snails 🐌 so no harm in removing them and leaving the stem and flower to stand tall. Dont be tempted to buy expensive potted allium flowers now, wait until the autumn and buy them as bulbs. Much better value for money 💜 I’ve spent the day working in garden full of alliums, removing lots of leaves with my handy Capability trowel from @kentandstowe - a previously gifted item. 🫐🫐🫐. The neglected blueberry bushes are thriving again 😍. I’ve admitted so many times I have no idea what to do when it comes to pruning these so I just avoid it and they don’t seem to care at all 👀🙌. I mulch them with ericaceous soil once in a blue moon and mostly let the rain water them but will give them a soak if it’s really dry. Growing salad leaves is something I have struggled with at the allotment, since nature seems to beat me to it. So earlier this year, we purchased a Vegtrug wall hugger planter for growing salads at home. The wall hugger is much narrower than their popular standard planter and fits perfectly under our lounge window. It also has room underneath, which is currently full of seedlings to harden off ready to plant out out. I hope it’s going to be a great planter for repeat sowing and offering us fresh salads through the summer. I started off some plug plant lettuce a few weeks ago, and have since sown more lettuce, Pak Choi, spring onions and small chantenay carrots. I just need to add some herbs which Il pickup whilst at the Gardeners World Spring Fair this weekend. Soon it will be a planter full of food, helping to minimise our weekly shop and plastic waste. Silly sower alert 🤦🏻♀️🌱💜 I sowed some summer purple sprouting broccoli, and some Sicilian Violet Cauliflower from @shegrowsveg side by side. But then they got muddled up 😫 So I now have a tray of healthy brassicas all potted on, but I don’t know which is which 🤦🏻♀️ I need to know this because I have two brassicas cages, and one is taller than the other so better for each seedling. Off to the #allotment ! Today's planting is Cucumber Mini, and Butternut Squash. The cucumber will go in the half built greenhouse and the squash will go one of the beds. "Use Spades not Ships. Grow your own food And Supply Your Own Cookhouse" - British WW2 poster designed by Abram Games and issued by the War Office. The poster urges citizens to grow their own food rather than having it imported by ships. Before WW2, the UK was importing over 55 million tons of food each year. However, after the outbreak of war the UK needed to import even more for the war effort while at the same time having its merchant shipping attacked by German U-Boats. As such, the 'Dig for Victory' campaign was launched where citizens were encouraged to start gardens and cultivate their own food. Millions of leaflets were issued, and by 1943 over 1.4 million people in the UK had allotments that were producing over 1 million tons of vegetables each year. A similar initiative called "Victory Gardens" was present in the United States. Abram Games, who designed this poster, worked extensively with the War Office between 1941-1946 and created over 100 memorable poster designs during this time. The old pond is out and the new one is in 🙌. Pretty sure digging this out last week was the last straw for my back as I’ve been basically immobile since 🥴. Roped 16 into finishing the job off for me today before the sun disappears and he’s done a great job 👏. Didn’t want to spend too much so used all the random slabs we had lying about 😂. In case you were wondering...Brussels Sprouts are beautiful 😍 Due to super weird weather here in #zone6 our overwintered kale, cabbage, collards, and Brussels Sprouts have all bolted. But, there is a silver lining. The flowers are gorgeous and LOADED with pollen which the honey bees love. Plus we got an early onset aphid infestation on the kale and collards which the chickens are devouring.
