Hey, Sanctuary Fam! We have a hopeful update on our new piggy friend! We recently got a call from the hospital, and they reported that he is doing much better. He has still has some nausea, but overall has been eating well and keeping down his food. There is some evidence of pneumonia, likely due to aspiration from the vomiting, but he has been given some medicine and is showing signs of improvement. We are confident that he will be able to come back to stay with us at the sanctuary soon! We want to thank our amazing supporters for rallying behind this little guy and helping us cover the deposit for his medical care. Your donations made an immediate impact on him, and it is thanks to y’all that he has a chance at life. We also want to thank the fantastic veterinarians that are ensuring that he is safe and cared for in this time. There is still definitely a long road of recovery ahead of our new friend, so donations are still deeply appreciated. Tonight’s din-dins was this absolutely fecking beautiful Vegan Sushi Platter from @caradams_saucery. It did defeat us so Dad has left over sushi tomorrow (lucky bugger) for his lunch tomorrow. These were absolutely stunning and so tasty (I’m going to run out of adjectives…!) and just absolutely perfect. It was easily the best sushi I’ve ever eaten 🤍 To finish off I had my first ever @littlemoonsmochi (the Vegan Choc and Hazelnut one) which was tasty. I didn’t really know what I thought it would be but the textures worked. At the moment my head is in a very difficult place and my anxiety is quite challenging. Things are really having to step up and that’s terrifying. I’m exhausted, drained and feeling frustrated. Hey guys 👋 allow me to re introduce myself! I’ve really not been active on here for a long time. My names Ro and I’ve been vegan for 10 years! 🌱 I started this IG to post my vegan food (obviously) but for reasons I’ll explain, I’ve never really kept it up. TW: Eating disorders. 🍎 For a long time, including when I first made this page, food has felt like an enemy and something for me to fear. I’ve struggled with various disordered eating patterns/ thoughts/ feelings since I was a child. For literally years - the majority of my life actually - I’ve lived counting all the cals I consume, gaining & losing weight and depriving myself of food freedom. Recently, through therapy, books and the support of others, I’m getting to a place where I’m ready to start celebrating food instead of fearing it. Going forward, my IG will be more of a representation of this, and not just some food I’ve been eating. I won’t go into specifics, or dwell on the negatives - I want this to be a positive place. I’ll also be sharing bits and bobs of walks, fitness classes (I recently took up a couple of new hobbies!)and other things that I’ve been up to! 🍉 I’ve made the shift to eating more whole foods, not counting calories and not focusing on the number on the scale. I’m trying to focus on how food makes me feel, instead of how numbers (calories, scales, dress sizes, serving sizes) make me feel. ❤️ I want this to be a safe space for myself and others - so if you’re worried that my IG could be triggering then I won’t be offended if you need to unfollow. So anyway! That’s the new direction of my Instagram for anyone who is remotely interested haha and if you’re still reading - I also love cats, walking, music, reading and tattoos ☺️

Happy Mother's Day! 💚 We wanted to highlight some of our amazing sanctuary mothers today, who nurture, protect, and love their babies just like any human mom would. 🐴 Our newest sanctuary mother, Mo, and her sweet baby Luxe 🐑 Olive, the first pregnant resident we ever cared for at the sanctuary, and her son, Pablo 🐐 Gigi, the resilient mother of Ryder and the dearly departed Racer 🐮 Jasmine, who would do anything to protect her son, Panda 🐑 Jacqueline, who gave birth to her twins Mary and the dearly departed Peter at the sanctuary 🐐 Jewel and her son, Noel, who were rescued together from a horrible living situation, but are learning to trust again together in the safety of the sanctuary 🐐 Kathy, who gave birth to her her surprise baby, Fawn, at the sanctuary 🐐 Janis, who gave birth to her son, Biscuit, in terrible living conditions, but will only know safety and love from now on 🐑 Jill, who arrived at the sanctuary pregnant with her son, Tristan And last but certainly not least, we honor Shawn, our sanctuary's co-founder. When it rains, it pours around here. We regret to announce that our sweet Fern has also passed away. 💔 As a piglet, Fern was discovered on the shoulder of I-35 South outside of Ames. It was assumed that she had fallen off a transportation truck. She was immediately taken to Iowa State Large Animal Hospital where the veterinarians looked her over to confirm that while she was was in shock and had some minor road rash, she was overall healthy. Fern grew up at the sanctuary and spent her days happily rooting around the pastures and receiving veggie treats from volunteers and visitors. A necropsy revealed no confirmed cause of death, so it is assumed that she passed away of age. While this is a difficult loss for our sanctuary family, we are glad that we gave her a loving home to grow up in and a natural end to her life, rather than a life cut short in the pork industry.
