Had a beautiful, if not stressful 2 and a half hours at the plot with the youngest. My aim was to strim the edges after mowing the jungle that was the grass on Monday. And naively thought I could also sort out the massive weeds at the end of the plot 🙄😅 a quarter down, but will need to let the ones I've pulled dry out ready to burn. So my plan is to alternate weeding and planting days. So then hopefully the pulled ones can be burning while I get the next ones out... That's the plan anyway, and I think that area will need weed control sheets as I have a niggle this is not an easy weed to be rid of... See that stick....that's my plum tree 😅 An old greengage plum tree, last year my plot neighbour asked if my boys wanted to climb his tree for plums, I hadn't even seen a greengage plum before never mind tasted one but they were so delicious I ended up making jam with them too! So this is what it looked like when we started last November.... And last 2 is now - LOTS of digging &pulling up weeds & clearing mountains of rubbish later! Trying to level it all, so I can start making beds by the fence, these will be filled with small fruit trees &raspberries &blackberries and perennials... one day hopefully not too long from now... 🤪🍒🫐🍓🌷🌻💚☘ And yes, this is still no-dig, you just have to do some initial levelling of the ground before placing compost on top, if you have mountains of soil in piles all over like we do. And you are also much better off digging out the roots of some really tenacious weeds such as brambles, nettles &dock - I don't mean digging up the whole ground like in the olden days, you just literally go and dig out the roots of the big clumps of weeds that you find. Had a big tidy up at the allotment yesterday. We are gradually removing the raised beds. This might seem a bit crazy but it will cut down on slug habitat, and hopefully red ant habitat too (I react badly to their stings). I want to keep the paths grass because it is so hard to get woodchip, and getting rid of the raised beds means it is much easier to mow the paths. In related news, I absolutely love my new Gtech battery powered mini-mower, it is the business - although it does slightly feel like I am hoovering.. 😂😂 The pond is finished and looking gorgeous - just need some nice shady planting round the edge for frogs and newts to shelter under. Tomato tunnel currently under reconstruction ready for this year’s plants. The cover was ripped to shreds by the wind at the end of last year. The new cover has been attached and just needs a bit of trimming. The plan is to make some borders and the wood is currently being propped up in place until they are constructed. Then it’ll be a good tidy up and it’ll be ready to go when the plants are. They were so rickety, they needed something doing to them but if we created a frame the other side of them, that would have been outside our border. A few hours at the allotment. Second early potatoes went in thanks to my helper. Then surprise visitors came and got their hands dirty with us. They planted out my onion sets while it strimmed the front of the plot. Yet to do the mountains of grass and work at the back. So any advice on getting rid of brambles and a fern looking weed will be greatly appreciated! My poor newly-sown carrots &chives! - found the fleece all ripped to shreds after just one week, as if some maddened animal had been at it, and actually, that's just about right - all the local crows are having nest-warming parties with my fleece!!?!! 🦅 Saw 3 of them pickering over a big piece, and 2 then took off with the remnants, etc.... 😱😲😬 Considering the approaching frosty nights next week, how do I protect my carrots now?!?? A bit of a planting plan coming together 🗺️ The plan is to divide the allotment into four zone types: 🫛 A veg patch and herb garden 🪻 The Purple Beds - with lavender boarders and flowers for arrangements 🌸 The Pink Beds - with hues from ballet slipper pink to peachy coral tones for cutting (hello Dahlias!) 🌳 A wildflower orchard with fruit trees and pollinator friendly native species I’ve bought LOTS of seeds … and some bare root plants too. £20 spent on 2 pots and 2 mints and 2 garlics at the garden centre. Been warned time and time again about how quickly the mint spreads, so I planted it in a pot…inside another pot with no holes. I drink industrial quantities of mint tea, I really want lots of it. So. Planted the garlic and sown some spring onions. And my peony poked through!!!
