The outdoor garden at Central Yorke School has some phenomenal produce growing with a vast majority of the plants being transplanted from the Food Ladder greenhouse. 🌱
Who needs a path! In my attempt to be better at using space I've decided to transplant spring cabbages in the middle of the path in my greenhouse. My thinking is that while the tomato plants are still small I'm hoping I'll get to harvest some cabbage... This might backfire! I've even decided to put multisown radish between the cabbages, in case they were feeling too roomy. The path is quite compacted, as expected, so it's good that they seem happy enough, although brassicas usually are in compacted ground... apparently! Difference between pic 1 and 2 is a week. Pic 3, just after covering the path with horse manure before transplanting the cabbages in. Pic 4 is from 1st April when I'd covered each bed with its mulch of very well rotted horse manure. Pic 5 and 6 is the difference of the week again. Veg bed number 2.... weelll... OK so it is a vegetable bed and we did plant it today, (actually it was Mr F) but not really eating veg. Mini pumpkins, peas (we will eat those) and some decorative beans. Which are randomly named Pablo 3rd by our daughter. Getting the pea supports ready for planting! 🫛 I've sown peas direct at the bottom of these canes, as my first round of peas never germinated (or, more likely a 🐁 or 🐌 ate them for tea!). It feels very late this year, but doesn't everything because of the poor start to spring we have had 🌧️ ?! Weißkohl, Kohlrabi, Brokkoli, Blumenkohl, Steckrübe, Zucchini und Kürbis durften nach draußen in die Beete, die Tomatenpflanzen haben es jetzt gemütlich im Gewächshaus. 🥦🍅 Das erste Mal haben wir in diesem Jahr die Gurkenpflanzen auch nach draußen an ein Rankgerüst gepflanzt. Die letzten Jahre hatten wir immer Probleme mit Spinnmilben an den Gurkenpflanzen im Gewächshaus. I bought some copper mesh as a snail/slug deterrent and put it around my brocolli I planted Friday. I know it's only day 2 and it's been warm and dry but so far so good. Finished the squash and cucumber arch yesterday which I'm really pleased with. I'm hoping to have a lovely lush green tunnel in a couple of months. Beans haven't sustained any slug damage and the courgettes, with mesh round, are looking fab. Direct sowed lettuce, coriander and beetroot and put another bag of potatoes in. Sowed sunflowers, cosmos, zinnia and poppies also direct. Last time I direct sowed sunflowers they didn’t germinate so we have back ups sown in the greenhouse. Weeded some of the dahlia bed it’ll take another couple of hours to finish. Stung loads from the nettles but I I will still leave some on the plot edges for wildlife. It was a lovely weekend warmest of the year lots of birds around and our fox still visits. We finally visited our raised bed at the community garden, after weeks of not getting there. We planned to check on our asparagus and weed too. However, weeding proved difficult as a local cat decided to plonk itself where we were working and have its tummy tickled. 🐈 We did manage to take a great crop from our asparagus. We have never seen them so big before and (whilst four years has been a long time to wait in order to harvest them having grown them from a tiny seed) the harvest has made our day! I finally have seedlings!!! Due to my holiday I decided not to grow from seed and to buy plug plants as I didn't want to leave mum with a mountain of seedlings that would need looking after. I couldn't do it though, I went through all my packets to see what could be sown in May and I was surprised at how much I could still get going (ok, I'm late with the tomatoes).
