This right here is why I resist planting warm-weather crops until May 15th or later! It got down to 38.1 degrees at my house this morning, which means the air temp AND soil temp dropped below what warm-weather crops need to thrive. Tomatoes, peppers, corn and squash can all get big mad if they get cold. In fact, temps below 50 can cause less efficient photosynthesis and reduced yields. Green Beans are powerhouses in your veggie garden. They produce quickly, and a lot. (From about 20 plants, Iโm picking this amount every two days). They freeze well, packed with nutrients (especially vitamin C) , and they IMPROVE your soil by adding nitrogen. (Compost for the best amount of nitrogen!). I rotate beans around my garden each year so they are improving the soil wherever they go. Last year I planted too many and we grew tired of them. I scaled back this year so we donโt feel overwhelmed. I added some runner beans to the mix too and canโt wait for them to start really producing. Weโre also seeing the sweet peas going crazy right now, but those early spring crops are about finished. Green Beans will produce all summer long if we let them! Beans. With all the rain weโve had, a little local herb, Plectranthus parviflorus, a lover of damp shady places, is popping up everywhere. Thatโs ok- always happy to accommodate a local. The lovely fragrant bushes of Philotheca are coming into flower. I moved a big pot of Prostanthera ( also aromatic) down next to a seat, admired Grevillea marmalade still throwing out those little pops of orange, planted Chinese cabbage and lettuce, checked the progress on native everlasting daisy seeds, and watched the antics of a pair of Eastern Yellow Robins. Here are some ideas for what to plant on the Front Range of Colorado in the first half of May โคต๏ธ (Super late posting this, life has been ๐ตโ๐ซ). Indoors: itโs a good time for cucurbits - cucumbers, squash, melons. Small, sturdy plants transplant well in my experience, but keep in mind that in many cases itโs easier and may be more successful to direct sow. I sowed a second round indoors yesterday, and theyโll be ready to go in the garden the last week or so of May. Direct sowing: turnips, carrots, radish, beets, potatoes if you didnโt get them in last month (like me), bok choy, spinach, lettuce, chard arugula, and you could try more kale. The window is closing on the cool season veggies. It depends on the year, and if youโve gardened here a while Iโm sure youโve noticed - some years we go from cold to hot fast, and some years we have a little more of a spring, so it will be hit or miss how your late planted cool season veg do, but definitely worth a try if you have the seeds. Coming up to mid month you can direct sow cucurbits, corn, beans. Transplanting: if you havenโt already, get your cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and kale transplanted. Onion family crops that you started from seed, and sets, can still be planted. Looking ahead: hold tight on warm season veggies unless you have season extension structures. Rough timing is good to keep in mind, but everyoneโs situations are different ๐ These are my recommendations based on what has worked for myself in this region throughout the years (though Iโve been know to break a rule a time or two!). Experiment and find what works for you! Odds and sods while stripping the garden. Not many slicers left. I counted around 20 but at least thereโs lots of cherry tomatoes still producing like crazy. Great for blending up to add to cooked food or roasting as well as salads of course. The flowers are getting fewer too and Miss Rosie Blossom is still asking for flowers for her teacher in the mornings. Having to start in the shrubs now ๐ Lovely light rain and moody steel grey skies. My favourite gardening weather and my mornings are spent stripping, pruning and sowing flowers for spring. Iโm also still tying in tomatoes and am hoping to get some all the way through winter.
