I love artichokes so much that I have an entire photo album dedicated to them on my phone. Artichokes are having their moment in the garden. Every Spring, when artichokes are at their height, I post something about their loveliness. Most years, I try a new artichoke recipe in the kitchen, along with old favorites. Due to sheer time, I’ve accumulated quite a few favorites. From fire-grilled artichoke morsels, to carciofi ripieni (a traditional Italian stuffed artichoke), marinated artichokes, shaved artichoke salad, homemade spinach artichoke dip, and roasted artichokes---I never struggle to find a way to eat them all. The only way to know how YOU like artichokes best is to try different recipes. Just finished planting my tiny little plot of corn. The last time I planted corn the entire crop ended up on its side from a wind storm! 05.13.24 It's one of my favorite times of the year! I can make Sun Tea with fresh mint from the garden. I simply add a few decaf tea bags, freshly picked, washed and slightly crushed mint and water. Place it in a sunny spot, and let it brew. If you've been following me, you know I love growing herbs and cooking with them. Mint is easy to grow, but can become invasive. My son buried sheets of metal 12 inches into the ground surrounding my mint bed, and those mint roots find their way around them.🤣. So I'm always trimming it and looking for ways to use it. A few times over the season I will cut it way back, and then dry it for hot tea in the winter. But I will use it fresh in: ✳️Sun Tea ✳️Mojitos ✳️Tabbouleh ✳️Tzatziki ✳️Raita ✳️Chutney ✳️Compound Butter ✳️Dressings and Marinades ✳️Add it to water for flavor What is your favorite way to use mint? Peach leaf curl is a very common problem that you would see your backyard trees each year. It is fungal disease that can cause leaf discoloration and/or distortion. For most part this disease causes damage which is ornamental and has no impact on fruit production but in some cases you could lose a tree. The most common treatment that is suggested is the use of copper fungicide when the tree goes dormant followed by additional sprays a couple of more times around Christmas and before buds emerge. But copper builds up in the soil over years of spraying and it is not desired. Additional thoughts from experienced growers in CRFG on alternatives. - [ ] It comes down to the vigor of the tree. A healthy tree will put out fresh set of leaves and the discolored/deformed one will be dropped once the new ones form. It is best of pick these deformed leaves and disposed them off once the new set is produced. This will reduce the infestation the following year. A tree that is growing in suboptimal conditions could suffer consequently. Plant a cultivar that is known to grow well in your area. - [ ] Some members of CRFG are trying out an alternative - ‘All Phase’ made by Circadian Products, with active ingredient: Potassium Sorbate (the common food preservative, originally derived from Sorbus berries). - [ ] Add a fresh layer of mulch when the tree goes dormant and water in the mulch to cover up any spores on the top. - [ ] A homemade safe recipe using Italian dressing that another CRFG member swears by is also being tested my other members. May is National Strawberry Month, and the perfect time to talk about strawberries! Strawberries are beginning to ripen and boy do they taste wonderful compared to any you could purchase in the store right now! Quick tidbit...there are Everbearing strawberries, June-bearing strawberries, and day-neutral. We typically grow ever-bearing or June-bearing here. When you go to the farms to pick strawberries, you are picking June-bearing...they produce a lot all at once. Everbearing produce throughout a longer growing season but in smaller batches. Depending on how you want to enjoy these tasty treats would help you decide on which type to plant. Strawberries spread, creating an edible ground cover and in our area they even remain semi-evergreen through the winter! To me strawberries are the very first signs that summer is right around the corner! Erysimum cheiri, the annual English wallflower, and the perennial cultivar ‘Bowles Mauve’ are the best-known wallflowers. Wallflowers grow best as perennials in cool, humid regions. In very hot summer regions, they are best grown as spring-blooming annuals. Set container-grown plants in the garden in spring; harden off plants for several days in the shade before setting them out in full sun. Sow seeds in spring or in late summer where winter temperatures do not drop below 20°F (-6.7°C). Worden we oud? 🌸We namen dit weekend met vlierbloesemchampagne en appeltaart afscheid van de eerste internationale student van dit jaar, een leerling van onze allereerste Franse stagiair Virginie. 18 jaar geleden heeft ze een seizoen de kneepjes van het kweekvak bij ons geleerd en daarna hebben we elkaar altijd een beetje in het vizier gehouden. 🍀Inmiddels geeft ze les en tipte ze haar leerlingen onze kwekerij en zo kwam Jerôme bij ons terecht. Hij staat op het punt zijn eigen voedselboskwekerij te starten in Frankrijk. Veel succes! 🌱De volgende student van L'institut Agro in Angers staat inmiddels ook in de startblokkenom deze zomer met ons mee te werken op de kwekerij en zal voor ons o.a. onderzoek doen naar de verschillende veenvrije potgronden waar we mee werken en naar ons voedselbosassortiment. Vorig jaar heeft een student organische meststoffen getest, waaruit bleek dat de volledig plantaardige meststoffen ontzettend goed scoorden in combinatie met onze potgrond. Zo leren wij ook veel van deze samenwerkingen, dus ondanks dat we geen groentjes meer zijn worden we gelukkig wel nog steeds wijzer🧓👵. En die Symphytum azureum op foto 1? Die bloeit met het blauwste blauw en is daarmee beeldschoon. Dat ie 'fanatiek' kan groeien is op sommige plekken een groot voordeel, handig voor moeilijke hoeken want het is een prachtige bodem bedekkende en daarmee onkruidwerende plant. De bloemen zijn in trek bij bijen en hommels. Plant deze smeerwortel op een zonnige tot licht beschaduwde plek voor een zo rijk mogelijke bloei. We kweken verschillende smeerwortels, dus kom eens neuzen in onze plantenwinkel.
