I bought an ivy leaved pelargonium from Lidl a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea what colour it was going to be. The flower buds have started to unfurl and it looks like the flowers will be a pale pink edged with red I noticed a woolly bear (garden tiger moth) caterpillar hiding among the leaves on Friday and it was still there yesterday when I potted the plant up so I popped it back on one of the leaves and left it to do it's thing. First pepper harvest of the year. 🪴 I decided to harvest these snack peppers early because my plant suffered a bit while I was away and I want to let it grow a bit more. 🪴These are Adeline snack peppers, a sort of small bell peppers. The garden is growing 😊 🍆 🌽 🍓 🍋 🥬 🍅 🥒🫛🫑🌶️🫚🧅🫘🧄🥔 We've been harvesting everbearing strawberries (Seascape) for a few weeks now, they make great snacks when out and about gardening away 😋. I did order more bare root strawberries that are June bearing (Honeoy variety), I'll have to wait till next June for a good harvest, I'm hoping this year they set more runners so that I can propagate them for more strawberry plants and hopefully have plenty to freeze and make jam with🍓. We've also been harvesting lettuce and it's so nice to not have to buy a whole head of lettuce, I just pick it outside of my front door and it's as fresh as you can get it, I love food that has the nutrition at 100% and not lost sitting in the store for days or even weeks! I didn't get pics of all that is growing in the seed trays or even starter pots or where I've planted cucumbers, melons, radishes, and Swiss Chard. We started clearing out the small hillside to create multiple tiers of raised beds, I'm excited to be able to use free materials as much as possible. This space we are in is definitely a dry run for the off grid living on our ranch. I will upload more pics again as I spend more time around the garden. My first strawberry harvest of the season. ☺️ My pineapple is really coming along. This is definitely bigger than the one grew last season. So size does matter...size of the pot. I still have to figure out the right potting mix and feeding sequence. The soil level for this plant went down several inches and due to the size, the plant needs support. The whole plant is leaning to one side. Now the fun starts as I begin hardening before leaving it outside. Technically yes, but they can carry disease and are often sprayed with anti-sprouting agents. Buying a planting variety from a trusted source, should mean it’s disease free and you can choose a variety that has been bred for your climate. There are two main types of garlic, soft neck and hard neck. The neck refers to the stalk that grows upward from the garlic bulb. Hard-neck varieties are generally better for cooler climates, there are far more varieties than soft neck but they produce less cloves. They have a stalk that stems from the center of the bulb and turns quite rigid at maturity and they also produce flowering stems known as scapes. Soft-neck varieties are better suited to warmer climates, they generally produce more cloves per bulb and are the varieties you’d likely find in supermarkets as they store for longer. They don’t produce scapes and have more leaves than stalk. I plant both, usually soft neck inside the poly tunnels and hard neck outside due to their hardiness. I just break up the bulbs into separate cloves and plant the large ones with the fat end downwards and the pointy end around 2.5cm below the soil surface and around 5inches apart. The cloves can easily be sown directly in a raised bed, pot or container. But I generally sow them directly into the ground and mulch with compost. 8-9 months later you’ll have an abundance of fresh garlic! Remove the scapes when they form if growing hard neck to ensure larger bulbs and harvest from around July onwards, once the top growth has begun to die back. What a gorgeous weekend of pottering about in the garden! ☀️ I’ve potted on my zinnias and the sunflowers are getting so big so fast! I forgot I had a foldaway table so this has become my new plant station! Frees up the actual garden table! I finally started off my dahlias and got a super surprise when I opened one of the bags and had THREE Belle of Barmera’s instead of 1 in there!!
