There really is nothing like pulling something out of the garden for dinner- especially when it has been a long day and your fridge is almost empty! These are mini Persian cucumbers and so far, have really impressed on how well they grow in this climate. They are sweet and flavorful- my favorite is just peeled with salt/pepper and a little vinegar. I have them in a large container with a tomato cage so they can vine. The container has a band of copper tape to deter slugs (which destroyed all of my cucumbers last season). And just like that, we have radishes! 🌱 I planted these guys about 4 weeks ago, paying somewhat attention to spacing (~ 2” apart). When I say somewhat.. I mean I poke holes where I see fit haha! Radishes are a cool season crop and needs to be succession planted every 2 weeks to ensure a steady harvest! Both leaf and bulb are edible and tastes great in stir fries & soups or you can turn them into dumpling & bun fillings! The temperatures have been rising here in SoCal (75F today) & I noticed bolting of the radishes already. I have 2 more batches coming, so I’m hoping they’ll survive w/ some provided shade 😆 Summer veggies coming soon 🌻

I am Asia and I’m an urban gardener, growing in a small space in my backyard. • Yesterday while we had a brief break from the rain, I took a moment walk with a cup of coffee to decide what needed the most work and how long I’d have before the rain started again! I had content that needed to be submitted, a chicken coop that needed to cleaned, seeds that needed to be planted, plants that needed to be pulled and rain that was unfortunately going to start again. But I decided first I needed coffee 🤣. Eventually, I chose the girls and quail. • As the busy season heads our way, here’s our reminder to take a moment! Maybe coffee isn’t your thing and you prefer tea…drink your tea and take a moment to admire your garden in whatever stage or shape it’s in this season. What am I growing so far? Lots of tomatoes! I have 3 different kinds this year, one beef steak tomato, a small cherry and also this beautiful yellow and orange beef steak that looks like a heart when you slice it! I can't wait for that one. We love tomatoes here and I'm so excited to have them this season. Leave a comment and tell me what's your favourite tomato to grow! A great tip is to plant tomatoes really deep! Or on its side, they grow roots all along the stem and it helps for healthy and sturdy plants. One of my favourites to grow! I love sage, as a herb and as a beautiful plant that grows into a shrub. A strong herb so you only need a few leaves, and easy to grow in a pot or in the ground. My new but used pepper container garden. Found it on someone's boulevard for free. Even has a water reservoir in the bottom. Karma is good. I have planted bell peppers and jalapeno peppers in it. Peppers are notorious for getting aphids. So I have intermixed companion plants that help keep the aphid populations at a manageable level. Happy sunday 🥳💚! Und es ist Pfingsten, d.h. morgen ist auch noch frei 💃. Ich liebe den Mai 😍 mit all seinen Feiertagen und kurzen Arbeitswochen. Wer noch? 😁 Da hat man soviel mehr Zeit 🕞 und Muße 🫠 für die wichtigen Dinge im Leben. Mehr Zeit, sich um die Bepflanzung 🌿 auf dem Balkon zu kümmern. Mehr Zeit, den Pflanzen beim Wachsen zuzugucken 🧐. Und noch mehr Zeit, die Besucher zu beobachten 🐝🐦🦋🐌🪲🐞🪳🕷🦗🪰🥰. Neben der schönen Alpenaster 🏔 sind beim letzten Pflanzenkauf 🛍 auch noch Phlox und Polsterthymian und ein Sonnenhut 👒 (Echinacea purpurea white swan 🦢) in meinen Wagen 🛒 gehüpft. Sonnenhüte hatte ich schon öfters... in pink 🩷... sie lieben die pralle Sonne und die Wärme. Davon habe ich reichlich 🌞🌡. Aber das war den pinken nicht genug 😒, das Wachstum war eher "rückläufig" 📉 bis 🚮. Die Blütenknospen, die die Pflanzen schon mitgebracht hatten, gingen nur teilweise auf. Neue Blütenstiele entwickelten sich gar nicht 🤨. Ob die Farbe 🩷❤️ auch über die Eigenschaften einer Pflanze mitentscheidet 🤔? Habt ihr auch schon solche Erfahrungen gemacht❓️ Vielleicht sind die roten Echinacea die robustere Urform. Aber rot kommt mir nicht auf den Balkon... ist farblich zu sehr dran an "ommmorange" 🧡. Ist einfach nicht meins 🤭. Generell wird der Sonnenhut 👒 als ausdauernd und anspruchslos bezeichnet. Und einer seiner bestbuddies 🧑🤝🧑 ist der Phlox. Hatte ich damals nicht, aber heute 👍. Vielleicht macht das den Unterschied und beide feuern ❤️🔥 sich beim Wachsen an 🙌. Genießt die freien Tage beim Wegfahren 🚲 und zelten 🏕 oder grillen 🔥 und chillen 🥱. I’ve done what I said I’d never do again.. 😬🥔 Grow potatoes in the ground at the allotment! Last year I had a DISMAL harvest from the ground (second pic!). They were small, pest eaten, a nightmare to dig up, awful to dig trenches to plant and also hard to keep weed/grass free! I grow in grow bags at home with great success but I had some chitted potatoes left over I didn’t want to waste. So I decided to put them in one of my nicer allotment beds instead. I didn’t trench, just dug individual holes. This beauty bloomed today, one of the many flowers I planted in my garden bed…then there are the nasturtiums, I bought a couple (because I’m quite impatient) and sowed seeds for the rest, but they are all the same size now so not sure which is which, but I’m very happy I decided to put them in, they are just gorgeous and fill out my beds quite nicely. I also planted too many German chamomile and didn’t know they grew so large (because I absolutely do not plan anything out…it’s a gift and a curse lol), so unfortunately I had to pull the majority as they are contending for space with the melons that are coming up. I see kale chips and refreshing mint and strawberry water in my future. The flowers were a welcomed harvest to brighten up this gloomy rainy day 😍. • It has been so rainy here and I noticed the chicken area needed some love so I spent some time in between the rain showers cleaning the coop and putting down more pine shavings. I know their little feet are thankful for that lol. • I’m so surprised that the kale hasn’t bolted yet. I don’t normally plant spring kale for that reason but I gave it a try this year and it’s been working out! • There so many things that need to be harvested right now mostly the herbs and greens. Small spaces to window boxes - the Sky Garden Challenge is a go 🌺 This summer, plant novices to seasoned gardeners are joining the Sky Garden Challenge at several apartment blocks across Greater Manchester. Running as a pilot this year, the challenge is all about the residents greening up whatever space they have from a balcony to a windowsill and connecting with nature through growing. The competition is only open to people in those blocks this year. Over the next few weeks we’ll introduce you to some of those taking up the challenge and others who make the most of their small garden spaces. They'll be telling you what gardening and nature mean to them and how even the smallest corner of green can make a big difference. To do this weekend: Start potting up and/or planting out! 😬 Some seedlings (chickpeas, sweetcorn and pumpkins) really need it. They’re starting to yellow which I think is a combination of root bound and needing a feed. Plus everything needs a good watering this morning as I’ve not done it for a couple of days and things are droopy 😂 The chickens annihilate anything I plant in the veg patch, so I’m going to use chicken wire and temporarily block off most of the area for a few weeks till what I plant has grown bigger. 13th - 17th May 2024: A week with some unexpectedly beautiful weather ☀️😊 as the garden is starting to really come to life 😊 📸 Diary: 1. The roses in both the front and back gardens are starting to arrive 🎉 Roses are just my favourites and, for me, they have to have a great scent as well as look heavenly 🌹 2. The absolute highlight of my week! Our new mini wildlife pond I recently made from an old sink in the front ‘wild’ area has finally got its first residents!!! Spotted this smooth newt, along with a little pond snail. The water is also alive with water daphnia and other goodies for them to eat. Absolutely chuffed! 🤗🦎💦 3. Everything has now been moved to the unheated greenhouses and I packed away the indoor shelving for seedlings this week. We have our kitchen view back! 4. A tour of our main greenhouse. Things are steadily growing now and I’m hoping it won’t be long before some bits can start going out-out 🪴 5. Our mini greenhouse with the incoming flower seedlings 🌱 6. The beds are starting to look fuller. The garlic is doing amazingly and the broad bean plants are almost as tall as me now 🧄🫘🌿 7. I just love the broad bean flowers, as do the bees! 😊🐝 8. I managed to add some ‘free’ plants to the shady area behind the swing seat. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like any of our foxgloves from last year are back but I’ve added some red campion and a couple of ferns that had self seeded around the garden. I’m planning this area to be more for wild flowers 🌸 9. It’s the first year I’ve been brave enough to try growing lettuce in beds. I’ve always thought the slugs and snails would make light work of them, so have only grown them in containers before. But they seem to be enjoying life! (And I added a bit of copper netting to help keep the slimy munchers away!) 🥬🐌⛔️ 10. A view from the swing seat, as the garden starts to fill 🌹🌸 I think we are in for a mixed bag of weather this weekend, with rain most of today.
